After what feels like an eternal casting session, it looks like we’re down to three contenders for the starring role in The Last Avenger: Captain America. According to IESB, it’s come down to Channing Tatum (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra), Chris Evans (Fantastic Four), and the heretofore unmentioned Sebastian Stan (Gossip Girl). The site notes that Tatum could have a scheduling issue with G.I. Joe 2; Evans could possibly be in another Fantastic Four movie (even though Fox is reportedly going to reboot the franchise) and as we all know you, can’t be two superheroes (someone forgot to tell Ryan Reynolds seeing as he’s starring in Deadpool and Green Lantern); and Stan is Romanian and Marvel Studios head-honcho Kevin Feige says he wants the actor to be American (although IESB says that Stan’s screen tests may have the studio thinking twice about that mandate).
As I’ve previously noted, I think Evans is by far the best choice. But Marvel comic artist Alex Ross has made a suggestion that’s fucking brilliant. Hit the jump for his genius casting for the role.
Ross says he would like to see Jon Hamm play the character. He explains,
“Captain America is supposed to be the patriarch of the Marvel universe. To get a guy in his early to mid-20s is only thinking about where the character began, not what he ultimately needs to become.”
Obviously, Marvel would prefer a younger actor so they would be fit for the action scenes and could grow into sequels. Secondly, Hamm’s Mad Men schedule probably wouldn’t allow for him to take the amount of time filming on these Marvel movies would require. But in an ideal world, Hamm would be the best casting decision by far.

NO NO NO NO!!! NO CHANNING TATUM!!! HORRIBLE HORRIBLE ACTOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just read that in EW. I think Hamm is a good idea. If not him then someone like him, age wise I mean.
EVANS all the way!
I fear they will pick TATUM. Just because he is famous and why wouldn't they if he agrees to the $300,000.
Brutal- all of those choices are brutal. Hamm should be Supes.
Ah! Aha! I said this almost 2 years ago! I posted it on my blog that no one reads! I posted it on IMDB with a link to my blog! I lobbied! I'm right!

Its true! Aha! I am god.
But if they do pick Channing Tatum, abandon all Marvel.
No offense to homosexuals but Channing Tatum is a faggot. If he is Captain America I will not see this movie. Cap is my FAVORITE and I had been excited about this movie until just now.
Jon Hamm would be amazing, I could totally see him playing Captain America. As for the look Channing Tatum would be good out of the 3 above, but he isn't a very good actor. Unfortunately Chris Evans just doesn't strike me as being a Captain America; maybe Spider man.
I don't get it, he is a faggot? Doesn't that make him perfect for the role, Captain America sure does look like a flaming homo also.
Ugh, grow some balls marvel, they should of cast JK, now were down to even worse choices, where Evans is only favored by default. If they cast Tatum I'm ot seeing it, and I do stand by that. Movies are expensive and I can wait to netflix it.
“To get a guy in his early to mid-20s is only thinking about where the character began” Well this movie is an origin story…..Also I'm tired of people suggesting older actors for cap. If this were a stand alone movie then I suppose he'd be a good fit. But it's not, this will be the beginning of a multi-picture deal. Do people honestly want cap to be (depending on the older actor) pushing 50?
Chris Evans ftw
they all suck for cap, looks like this is going to be a suck-ass movie. good job marvel productions, seem to know how to pull defeat out of the jaws of victory for each of your characters.
@Keola
The biggest reason they should get an older actor is because its not a one movie deal. Its mainly because of the Avengers that they should skew older. Think, can you really take Channing Tatum, Ryan Phillipe, or even Chris Evans (to a lesser degree) as the leader of the Avengers? Can any actor under 30 really challenge Tony Stark for the leadership? I don't think so. Since Cap is supposed to lead the Avengers, getting an older guy like Hamm gives him the veteran quality that you can't fabricate from younger people. He has the presence that a lot of younger actors (specifically anyone noted so far) don't have. I'd say Chris Evans is the next best choice (Hemsworth would have actually worked, but Branagh got him first. But like Ross said (and I said 2 years ago, see other comment) you need to consider beyond his origin story.
THR is reporting that the part is Evans' if he chooses to accept.
I hope to god its not Channing Tatum. He sucks. I swear they better not put the dumbass guy from the dumbass movie “Dear John”. I will refuse to watch it if he's in it.
Why does Hollywood always have to mess with a good thing. Their are tons of Captain American fans, and then they have to watch him played by a dumbass.
I am considering it…. in terms of physicality at least. Cap has the body that puts olympians to shame, can perform amazing acrobatics, and can hurl that shield like nobodies business. Can Jon Hamm (or any other older more “veteran” actors) do any of that without looking silly? Maybe Matt Damon could do it but even though I like him as an actor I just don't see cap when I look at him (Out of these three Evans gets my vote).
Also, last comment here, but didn't anyone see what they did to Brad Pitt in Benjamin Button, if they can make him look 20, can't they get Jon Hamm down to 25ish and tweak the story a little? Then freeze him after the first movie and bring him into our time for the Avengers.
How is Joe Hamm a good idea? He has dark hair, dark eyes, and isn't exactly an action actor. Better question, how is he better than say..Mark Valley from Human Target or even Aaron Eckhart?
Mark Valley or a Aaron Eckhart with some physical training totally could pull Cap off.
Mark is on a tv show that I don't think is going away anytime soon (unless by chance the network that funds it cancels it).
Yeah, wasn't Cap like 19-20 years old when he started?
Well gee, I'm sure you'll be first in line to see it, so you can rush home and whine about it after seeing it. “WAAAAH!”
Damn man, get out of my head! lol I wish that Eckhart was a lil younger so they would give him this role. Both him and Valley have the screen presence to pull off Cap. I hate the choices given, I may have to just sit back and wait for WB to get into gear. Marvel is just becoming so full of disappointing titles…
Like what? You do know that Marvel Studios only handled 3 films (with Thor and cap on the way) right? Or are you counting the films they had nothing to do with as well?
What the–!? Chris Evans as Cap? Marvel shoulda got behind Krasinski or Hamm…this is gonna suck.
I swear to god if Channing Tatum gets it…urgghhhhhahfsldkfsalfeioafh;w
i really he doesn't accept, although he more than likely will.
So let me get this right, the fact that the movies were not under the Marvel Entertainment banner means that they were NOT movies based on Marvel comics and their properties? Because that lil detail doesn't really matter my friend. Of all the DC movies made compared to the Marvel-based ones( Including Wildstorm, Vertigo and Image) Marvel has disappointed me more.
Oh so you were counting the properties? ok now I see your point, but I disagree with on what you said about that detail not making a difference.
I love the work of Alex Ross and trust his outlook on things, but I have to slightly disagree with him on something. I understand his idea of Cap as the patriarch of the Marvel U and wanting an actor who has that quality. But the thing is that this movie will be Cap's origin story set in W.W.II and in the origin Cap/Steve Rogers is a twentysomething guy who gets the Super Soldier Serum and goes on to become the Star Spangled Avenger. A twentysomething actor is absolutely needed for an origin story, which this movie is. Said actor picked for the role would grow into the patriarch thing in The Avengers as well as any and all of the other films to follow The First Avenger: Captain America. Jon Hamm would be great in the role, but is a bit too old to do the origin of the character now. I wouldn't buy Hamm as a twentysomething Steve Rogers in his origin…besides…I'd rather see Hamm play Superman.
Unfortunately I think Hamm has missed the boat for playing a franchise superhero due to his age. He is 38 or 39 now, he'd be 40 by the time the first movie comes out and Marvel is obviously looking for someone to commit to the Captain America role for the next 10 years with the 9 picture deal. Hamm would have made a great Green Lantern, Daredevil or Cyclops 5 years ago, but you really have to stick to a guy around 30 if you want him to be viable for an entire series. Robert Downey, Jr. is an exception because Iron Man doesn't rely on youth or physical fitness, and is a more mature character from the start.
