While Captain America: Civil War has already amassed $291.2 million at the international box office, the highly anticipated Marvel film finally launched its domestic debut last night with Thursday “preview” screenings, and things are off to a strong start. The film scored $25 million, which puts it just behind Avengers: Age of Ultron which nabbed $27.6 million during its Thursday night preview screenings, but well above The Avengers’ $18.7 million and Iron Man 3’s $15.6 million.
But while the film has only been in theaters for a matter of hours, it’s already scored one box office record. With $3.1 million in Thursday previews, that marks Marvel’s best performance yet for IMAX previews, besting Age of Ultron’s $3 million. While the film doesn’t officially open until today, Thursday evening showings have now become the norm post-The Dark Knight Rises shooting, as theaters now start those “midnight screenings” much earlier in the day.
Civil War should do swimmingly at the box off this weekend thanks to stellar reviews, and how high it soars is anyone’s guess. Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ astounding $247.9 million opening weekend record is gonna be tough for anyone to beat, but Jurassic World’s second-place $208.8 million opening or The Avengers’s third-place $207.4 million seem within reach. Current projections have the movie opening at or above $200 million, so we’ll be watching closely all weekend long to see how high this thing shakes out.
For now, a refresher on the Top 10 domestic opening weekends of all time is below for your perusing pleasure.
