We’ve got some Captain America news for you today. As with most Marvel movies, Captain America: The First Avenger will be getting a sequel. We learned back in February that The First Avenger scribes Stephen McFeeley and Christopher Markus had been tapped to start work on the screenplay for a sequel. Well now, even though the first film hasn’t even hit theaters yet, McFeeley recently spoke a bit about the follow-up, saying that they’re working on how to incorporate more period material into the sequel.
Hit the jump to see what he said, and to check out a new featurette from the film. Starring Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Stanley Tucci, Tommy Lee Jones, and Hugo Weaving. Captain America: The First Avenger hits theaters July 22nd in 3D.
Given that Cap ends up in present day in The Avengers, which directly follows the timeline of The First Avenger, McFeeley was asked by Screen Junkies if there was room in a sequel to go back to World War II:
“Well, our hope is that there is room and we’re negotiating how to do that now. The story will likely be in the present day. We’re experimenting with flashback elements for more period World War II stuff. I can’t say much more than that but we made it baggy enough to refer to more stories in the past.”
While I’d love to see more period stuff from Captain America, finding a feasible way to return to that time period that doesn’t feel awkward is going to be tough. When asked if they intentionally left gaps in The First Avenger so that they could return to that time period later on, McFeeley responded thusly:
“Absolutely. He had more adventures than just the one you’re going to see in the movie.”
So it sounds like they’re definitely committed to finding a way back to the 1940’s. This may be the right way to go, as early buzz on Joe Johnston’s film has been very positive.
A new featurette for Captain America: The First Avenger was recently released. We know we’re a little late getting to this, but it’s actually pretty cool. The featurette is centered on Cap’s shield, with Evans and Co. talking about the shield itself, and the different practical shields they used on set. They even address its appearance in Iron Man and Iron Man 2.
Cant wait for cap to hit the big screen. At first i was a bit hesitant due to evans being cast in the starring role. However the more that i have thought about it… if he could simply tone down his sarcasm and present himself in a more serious manner than i dont think there could possibly be a better choice. He deffinatley has the look. I just dont know if i can see chemistry errupting between chris evans and robert downeys characters who are great friends in the comic. For some reason it just sits uneasy with me. But we shall see!!! I have great faith in RDJ he will make it all work somehow. Lol
In Captain America sequels, of course there will be room to return to WWII stories in flashbacks! After Captain America is found by the Avengers in the modern world, (then, the 1960′s) Cap was always haunted and burdened by painful memories of WWII and the death of his partner Bucky Barnes. Captain America was probably more emotionally troubled than all the MARVEL hero’s of the 1960′s. Say what you will about Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. But they knew how to bring the DRAMA to comics and engage the reader.
Very cool featurette. Glad we ran it. I am still holding off on having high hopes for the film, but I definitely look forward to see what they do with his numerous key moments.
Evans seems to be pretty mellow on set, which bodes well for the film. He doesn’t seem to have any comedy bits in the trailers I have seen, which leads me to believe they understood that Cap isn’t a funny guy but pretty serious. Especially initially.
There is plenty to work with via flashback.
Someone mentioned Cap working through the death of Bucky. Why not bring in the Winter Soldier? Solid enemy, can match up with Cap.
Or, the Red, White & Black storyline with Isaiah Bradley? That was heavy.
Maybe both?
Wait to see if your movie bombs before to write the sequel, a$$hole!
