Marvel has released the first trailer for Captain America: The First Avenger. As I said last month, all too often Hollywood disappoints me.  Whether it be who they choose to direct a project, or the way they decide to tell a story, I leave the theater wondering how a sure fire hit ended up such a disaster.  But every once in awhile they get it right.  Like they reached into my imagination and pulled out exactly what I was thinking.  Which brings me to director Joe Johnston’s Captain America: The First Avenger.

If you were nervous about the film, I think this trailer is going to make you very happy as everything just looks perfect.  Hit the jump to check it out and then tell me you’re not excited.  Captain America: The First Avenger stars Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Stanley Tucci, Tommy Lee Jones, and Hugo Weaving.  It opens in 3D on July 22, 2011.

captain-america-the-first-avenger-red-skull-hi-res-01Here’s the official synopsis for Captain America: The First Avenger:

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER. Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel and Louis D’Esposito will executive produce. The film will be released in the US on July 22, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

Born during the Great Depression, Steve Rogers grew up a frail youth in a poor family. Horrified by the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe, Rogers was inspired to enlist in the army. However, because of his frailty and sickness, he was rejected. Overhearing the boy’s earnest plea, General Chester Phillips offered Rogers the opportunity to take part in a special experiment… Operation: Rebirth. After weeks of tests, Rogers was at last administered the Super-Solider Serum and bombarded by “vita-rays.” Steve Rogers emerged from the treatment with a body as perfect as a body can be and still be human. Rogers was then put through an intensive physical and tactical training program. Three months later, he was given his first assignment as Captain America. Armed with his indestructible shield and battle savvy, Captain America has continued his war against evil both as a sentinel of liberty and as leader of the Avengers.

Awesome! I’m really excited for this, and to be honest it looks like it’s going to be waaaay better than Thor.

    • baldowl

It does, doesn’t it? It won’t require the suspension of disbelief Thor demands.

      • excpired

Yes, because we can really believe America had the technology to completely alter a grown mans physique in the matter of moments using chemicals. You know how the scientist said “That was penicilin”, well guess what kiddies, that is about all America had during WWII.

Not sure how Thor being another race of beings from another planet is anymore a suspension of disbelief than 90% of what we churn out in numbers for to see at the theaters.

All these Thor haters are getting on my nerves, the trailer LOOKED good and his costume is actually good to, whereas the Captain America one looks like balls.

I’m kind of praying that if a second one is made it is done present day and then his costume is completely modernized.

The trailer actually didn’t look too bad though.

You can return to your D&D game now.

This was well worth the wait!

Best trailer line: Tommy Lee Jones (his words in reference to a certain figure affiliated with the Third Reich).

Best scene: Cap throwing his shield.

Best symbolism: The “rebirth” or “birthing” scene.

  • Derlis

Well I’ll be dammed! Asides from the shitty post-hans-zimmer music in the trailer, that looked pretty awesome. Here’s hoping Silvestri will give us an awesome old-school orchestral score.

  • notme

wiw this film doesn’t look good at all

  • TyrannosaurYogi

I feel MUCH better about this. MUCH better than what I first got from the weak looking Thor trailer. I enjoy Chris Evans quite a bit (man-crush, I admit it), I’m glad this has a slightly more serious tone and not filled with derpy Spiderman 3 humour that waters everything down into mild flavoured Hollywood Koolaid cimena that brings sadness to my heart. I am impressed with Evan’s physical commitment to this role!

  • rocky

That looks totally awesome. Man this is going to be a blast

And I must say that I’m loving Hayley Atwell, she is gorgeous. Love the part where she’s tempted and reaches for Steve’s chest

  • Smoke4Jesus

Can’t wait for this movie! Looks like its going to be great! And i agree with IllusionOfLife, this movie is gonna be waaaay better than Thor.

  • baldowl

Does anybody else see Steve’s eyes turn Hulk green as the transformation begins?

    Looking very sweet!

Heads up, this film is directed by Joe Johnston, the man behind subpar films such as Hidalgo and The Wolfman. He did make decent kids flicks though, like Jumanji and Honey I Shrunk The Kids.

Second heads up, the film’s screenplay is written by Christopher Markus, the man who butchered the dialogue of the last two Narnia flicks.

Let’s just say that those two factors right there guarantee this flick will be no more than a great popcorn muncher forgettable by the time you go to bed.

      Seriously, man?

    • Alex–

Yeah but the Wolfman had it’s moments and with this cast so will this film.

Granted it won’t be anything super amazing but it will be a good film with some ‘wow’ moments in it.

The first two narnia flicks weren’t that bad at all. I think it will be better than Ironman but not as good as Spiderman, but unlike those two this film is alot more relatable.

Thor, Captain America, Green Lantern. I’m not a comic fan although I have nothing against them, and I’m finding these new-to-movies characters refreshing. They are all a bit out there, too, which is harder to accept without the cultural icon status of Superman and the familiarty of Spiderman and Batman. Like X-Men these guys have to prove themselves, but if we are going to continue to have so many dozens of super hero films coming our way, I’m glad we are getting fresh angles that come with budgets. :)

If I can get past how bad the Chris Evan’s pasted on head effect is, this movie might actually be pretty good. To be fair “person” Johnston also directed October Sky(very good) and The Rocketeer(solid).

I’m really excited for this. The trailer looks great. Chris Evans looks like he can show some range and not throw out one liners with every line (looking at you Reynolds). I was surprised to see that there must be some extensive CGI scenes of “fragile” Rogers/Evans. It looks like they pulled that off really well.

(I’m also excited for Thor despite all the haters. Also excited for Green Lantern despite turning Jordan into joker Deadpool.)

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO PUMPED!!!! LOOKS REALLY GREAT! I was so worried, but the effects, the transformation, everything looks spot on. Well Played.

I’m loving what I saw except for Tucci. I think they should have gone with someone across the pond(CHEERIO!). I want my senses to be in suspended animation and Tucci doesn’t do it for me here. But any way the movie looks damn good, so far!
Thor is going to suck balls!!!

I am still not impressed by this. This trailer was just so-so , it was not a very big deal, most scenes were already seen. As for throwing a fake shield, really “anyone could do that on screen”. I also don’t buy into the hype this movie has created. Hype is always created, people get their expectations high – the film is terrible. Chris Evans doesn’t impress me much either, his acting just comes off subpar and the man has no true charisma about him. He comes off fake and cheesy, from what I have seen so far. His acting hit me the same way in The Losers and The Fantastic 4 films. Pure ‘cheesy’. Nothing natural or noteworthy about it. Unless they actually come up with some better acting by the ‘lead actor’, I won’t be impressed. (On a lighter note Tommy Lee Jones, looked great as usual. Now he is a fantastic actor !) I am also looking forward to seeing Thor more than this. Chris Hemsworth, is so far, showing some serious acting chops in his trailers. He also has a ‘manly’ charisma about him – unlike Evan’s – ‘baby faced looks’ ( Evans could be the leader of The Rugrats). Overall, Hemsworth is just a more impressive actor and by far a more impressive looking hero.

      Couldn’t agree with you more

  • Tim

Quietly confident the movie will be good, Transformers 2 made me not believe in trailers anymore. Looks like with this and Thor (I don’t know why the hate) coming, the Avengers looks set.

  • Migz13

Hopefully this would be one of Johnston’s ‘GOOD’ movies.

  • nom79

Trailer looks pretty good but I’m still not stoked on Evans being Cap. He was already in a Marvel flick……with so many actors in Hollywood you would think they could’ve attached someone different to the mix. Give other people a chance for crying out loud. SMH!

Great trailer, I’m there opening day.
