Earlier today, we got our first look at Chris Evans in full-on Captain America garb, sans head gear, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly. Now, more pictures from EW’s coverage of Joe Johnston’s Captain America: The First Avenger have surfaced. The pics don’t display anything akin to action, but they do feature several strong shots of Evans decked in WWII attire, complete with Captain America’s vintage shield strung over his back. We also get a great shot of Hugo Weaving’s Johann Schmidt, who later becomes the villainous Red Skull, and smaller shots of Stanley Tucci, playing Dr. Abraham Erskine, and Hayley Atwell as Cap’s love interest Peggy Carter.

Overall the look of the film mirrors Johnston’s own The Rocketeer, which isn’t a bad thing, with shades of Stephen Sommers’ GI: Joe – which is a bad thing. Hit the jump to see the images. Captain America: The First Avenger opens in 3D on July 22, 2011.

Also, here’s a synopsis of the film:

The year is 1942, and Steve Rogers is a scrawny lad who desperately wants to fight Nazis for his country but can’t because he’s been deemed physically unfit. His fate — and his physique — is radically transformed when he signs up for Project: Rebirth, a secret military operation that turns wimps into studs using drugs and assorted sci-fi hoo-ha. There’s a love interest (Major Peggy Carter, played Haley Atwell), there’s a sidekick (Bucky Barnes, played by Sebastian Stans), and there’s the Red Skull (Hugo Weaving), Hitler’s treacherous head of advanced weaponry, whose own plan for world domination involves a magical object known as The Tesseract (comic fans know it better as The Cosmic Cube).

Wow … it looks Awesome & Authentic … Chris Evens Rocks in every single picture… I still have my doubts about Haley Atwelll, she has very strong features and looks old too, I have seen her in Brideshead Revisited and The Duchess. its said that Emily Blunt said No to the movie because of the potential 3 movies, press and more fame deal… I wish she had accepted the Offer!

This looks amazing!! I see Weaving has the Hydra symbol too! I’m just wondering when we’ll get to see him with the Red Skull mask on but either way, Evans looks epic in the Cap suit!!!

All always have doubts because Johnston is directing. I don’t think he makes bad movies. He’s just never made a really great movie IMO.

I just watched THE WOLFMAN and yup not bad, but not great either.

Um maybe this i a little of the male pig in me but why couldnt they have someone more attractive than Haley Atwell ? Arent there tons of young good attractive actresses that couldve played this role ? I really hope its her great acting that wins me over in this movie lol

Chris Evans looks great, but I thought we were going to get a really cool scene where we see his body transform via CGI, but it looks like he’s in some chamber where we won’t be able to tell what’s happening. Oh well, still excited for the movie. Looks great so far. I’ll also be curious to see how they do at the end of the movie where I assume 70 years later Cap’s body is found thus beginning The Avengers movie. Especially with Cap’s costume, kind of a big transition.

I think this is a little mistake, I don’t know, ’cause, you know how in marvel comics they put together a crapload of different hero teams together in one series, well, I wonder what would happen if they do an Avengers and Fantastic 4 movie, are they going to change Chris Evan’s old character the human torch for some other guy who probably can’t portray him as well as Chris does?

The 2 Fantastic Four films are going to be considered “non-canon” by The Avengers Universe. And Fantastic Four is currently in the process, like Spider-Man, of getting re-booted. Unfortunately, I don’t think either of those films are going to be in line with The Avengers films because other studios still own the rights. That’s the only reason Sony is re-booting Spider-Man, so they can keep the film rights. Same goes for the X-Men films, though at least there’s a ton of potential for other films there. X-Men is kind of its own little universe. I’m not totally positive about what’s happening with the Fantastic Four re-boot though and whether it will be in line with Marvel Studios films.
