The VFX reels for Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Gone Girl have been released online, and they provide a terrific juxtaposition about how visual effects are utilized today.  When it comes to Captain America, it's pretty clear that the movie is a visual effects extravaganza, although it's cool to see in how many ways.  Yes, all of the helicarriers and jets and so forth are animated from scratch, and there's another level of artistry in try to get the physics right.

Then there's Gone Girl, and we see the level of precision David Fincher demands from his movies, and that the best way to go about it (and plenty of other productions do this as well) is to control as much as possible.  There's no need to shoot on location if you can control the background.  Of course, on some level, none of this is new.  Old movies used matte paintings, and now we use green screen.  It just comes down to the level of detail and how much a filmmaker can augment a shot and create something out of nothing.  Hit the jump to check out the Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Gone Girl VFX reels.
