New Images from CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER; Chris Evans Talks Cap’s Relationship with Falcon

by     Posted 233 days ago

Superhero fans don’t have to wait long for 2014’s first comic book movie, as Marvel’s sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens wide in just a couple of short months.  Some new images from the pic have landed online today, along with some comments from Chris Evans regarding Cap’s relationship with Anthony Mackie’s Falcon in the follow-up.  Described as a political thriller, The Winter Soldier finds Captain America teaming up with Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) to face off against an assassin known as “The Winter Soldier.”  As we can see in these new images, it appears that Cap’s old suit makes an appearance in the sequel.

Hit the jump to check out the new images and to see what Evans had to say about the relationship between Captain America and Falcon and the film’s relevance to today’s world.  Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens in 3D on April 4th.

captain-america-the-winter-soldier-chris-evansSpeaking with Hero Complex, Evans spoke about the timely nature of Cap’s dilemma in The Winter Soldier:

“For Steve, it’s about what is right. He’s relatively acclimated to the modern day — it’s not tech shock anymore, he’s not just like, ‘What’s a cellphone?’ It’s more about, given his situation, given the company he works for, what are we doing that’s the right thing? How much privacy, civil liberties are we willing to compromise for security? It’s pretty crazy how relevant it is right now.”

The actor also talked about why Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson (Falcon) are drawn together in the pic:

“Meeting Mackie’s character, he used to serve, now he works at the VA counseling guys who come home with PTSD — they connect on that level. I think they’re both wounded warriors who don’t bleed on other people. Cap has no one to bleed on. I think Mackie knows how to handle people like that. … Sometimes when things are bad, trusting a stranger is the way to go.”

Guess he wears different uniforms in this movie! Looks like he goes back to the look of his original suit too, which I always liked.

    • pwnednoob

Same. I thought it was much better then his Avengers uniform (which always looked kind of cheesy to me). I’m curious as to why he switches them up in the movie tho. Can’t wait for this film!

It looks good, but in the setting, I have to admit The Stars and Stripes do look a bit dated. The newest uniform is incredible though.

      • Lance

        “Iconic” never looks dated, son.

      • Leo Spaceman

I was paraphrasing Captain’s own words from when he was talking to Coulson in the Avengers.

      • The Flobbit

Stars and Stripes look *incredibly* cheesy and dated, especially to non-Americans like myself and oh, half the world. You can tell Whedon and Co. are trying to play them down.

      • Leo Spaceman

The F**k you mean you aren’t American? For the love of Lord Obama that had better be a joke about you actually being from Middle Earth.

Now I may be An English Citizen, and I might have grown up closer to Canada then McDonalds, but this is America damn-it so shut up and accept our democracy. We will be sending it to you first class Drone courtesy of the God Damn *Incredibly* cheesy Red White and Blue.

      • The Flobbit

[OK, I realize after I typed this that you were probably joking. But who cares?]

Greetings, you backwater inbred hillbilly. You know that paper with words and lines on it? It’s called a map. Do you know what the map shows? That America is just one sad country in a big world.

Yeah! Historically, Alberta has aways been a part of Texas. Commie fags !

      • Zenexo

Well after Nick Fury gets injured it seems someone else takes over SHIELD who happens to be one of the bad guys thus causing Captain America to leave SHIELD. Disgusted by SHIELDS unethical methods he wants to the don red, white and blue again to stand for justice and freedom so he steals his old costume from a museum.

I also really like how Marvel really feels to be tackling different Genres with each of their films. I don’t know enough technical film lingo, but this really has the feel of a political thriller which is exciting.

Problem is, Iron Man 3 turned out more like an episode of How I Met Your Mother with big CGI action scenes. Thor always seems like a cheapo version of Star Wars 1-3.

      This looks slightly more tolerable.

      • Brandon

I haven’t seen the second Thor, but the first one was just kind of awful overall. The final fight sequence was very anticlimactic. Iron Man 2 and 3 were bad…like really bad. At least the first Iron Man is highly watchable. I can’t believe they took the character of Tony Stark/Iron Man and just ran him into the ground like that. I expected much more from Shane Black’s writing given Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and his other works.

Horrible would it have killed Chris evans to put on some god dam weight like he did in the first movie instead of being a string bean in Avengers and now this one !! The WW2 out outfit looked camp as well did the Avengers one!! Would it have killed them to do an up to date version of the comic for crying out loud!??? A mesh/Chain mail look with comparable colors not bright like the comic but real world and made that Johnny storm slim jim put on weight !!

    • Please

Oh, because CHAIN MAIL doesn’t look campy…

    • Guy Smiley

The storyline IS based on the comics… Great stuff from Ed Brubaker’s run.

If you’re talking about the costume, yeah, I’d rather it look more like the comics too. It’s the helmet (instead of a mask) that I don’t like. It reminds me of that hyperactive kid in the crash helmet Mike Myers used to play on SNL.

But Evans looks great… Why does he need to put on weight? He’s still muscular. What do you want?

  • jk

Both of the uniforms in this movie are better than his Avenger suit. Hope one of these makes it into Age of Ultron.

The first was meh, so I am not going to invest my time or money checking this one out. Esp not because Scarlett will do her shit acting again. Evans was great in Avengers though.

    • Guy Smiley

Christ… What do you people want? The trailer was badass, the source material is fan-freakin’-tastic, and this looks a helluva lot close to what I’d hoped Agents of SHIELD was going to be (as opposed to the crappy show we got). Plus: Robert Redford.

I expect this to be the best Marvel effort since The Avengers, and maybe the best since the first Iron Man movie.

Having said that, I hate Falcon’s costume. Almost as much as I hated Cap’s in The Avengers. Once in a while, it’s OK to look more like the comic books. It certainly hasn’t hurt Iron Man or Hulk. Or Thor, though I wish he’d wear the helmet.

  • TigerFIST

Didn’t Falcon get his wings from Black Panther in the comics?

  • Thomas K.

Soooo… Why does Capt have 2 suits. 1 of which looks like his Jogging Suit?

  • Django9000

    Spoiler Alert:

    - KEVIN FEIGE is secretly running SHIELD ! ! ! ~ =P

  • Jose

I’m thinking he returns to the old suit after he quits SHIELD because he doesnt agree with their tactics.

  • DFess

Actually it looks like they altered the suit a little bit, in Captain America: The First Avenger it only had two stripes on the stomach, and those stripes had pouches like the utility belt, it looks like they mixed Avengers Cap with WW2 Cap, and I agree Chris Evans needed to bulk up again to fill the suit out better.

  • pro346

this could turn into a 2 hour ep of agents of shield with some seen it all before cgi action shots…or it could be great after what ive seen this year from marvel my expectations are very low
