The first trailer for Joe and Anthony Russo’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier is now available.  In the upcoming sequel, Captain America (Chris Evans) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) team up to face off against Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), who has been survived and become an assassin known as “The Winter Soldier”.  However, the trailer doesn’t explain the Winter Soldier’s origin.  That’s okay because it does an excellent job of conveying the moral conflict at the center of the movie: Captain America’s values of right-and-wrong versus the grey area inhabited by S.H.I.E.L.D.  Beyond that central conflict, you have plenty of terrific looking action and a bad day for the helicarrier.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Cobie Smulders, Georges St-Pierre, Frank Grillo, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp, Maximiliano Hernández, Robert Redford, and Samuel L. JacksonCaptain America: The Winter Soldier opens April 4, 2014.

Here’s the synopsis for Captain America: The Winter Soldier:

After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” finds Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy—the Winter Soldier.

Looks like more Yankee Doodle Dandy propaganda bullshit! The worst country in the history of the world trying to hide its horrific war crimes and mass, Big Brother like spying its allies, with a flashy superhero movie. F-CK THE AMERICAN WAR MACHINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Ruprect

What a dim, sad world you live in.

Made dim and sad by American pigs and there evil empire. Thanks for ruining the world’s economy dickheads!

I was going to type something real immature to you, ‘Hit By Realness’, like: “Meet me on the playground after school, so I can kick you in the the shin!”

But then (unlike you) I took a deep breath, smiled, and decided to post this hilarious clip from Nacho Libre. Enjoy!:

If you weren’t so insistent on attacking Americans, you might be able to illustrate your points and I bet you’d be surprised a lot of American’s share your frustrations with America. The American war machine makes me sick, period. Our economic divide makes me sick, and the fact that we can destroy another country’s infrastructure, so readily accept what our media and fear-mongering politicians feed us, makes me sick. But you can’t attack ignorance by being ignorant yourself, otherwise you’re accomplishing nothing but illustrating your own hypocrisy. “He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby becomes a monster.” If you poke and insult, nothing good will come of it. But a rational discussion, working together, the world can be improved and America can be and wants to be improved. There are many many caring people here. And many others, under the influence of the powerful spin of our elite and the media as their an agent of control. Many of us are waking up to this. And I believe, it’s a theme this Captain America movie explores. Anyway, best of luck to you, whatever country you’re from.

This is not a politics forum. This is a forum for Marvel’s upcoming superhero movie.

      • Guest

        Exactly.

Sorry Brah, Americans can’t pull the “it’s not our fault” card. You voted in the politicians and you’re keeping the war machine thriving by not voting against it. You’re directly responsible.

      • Guest

So you know who and what I voted for, do you? With all due respect, you’re exhibiting the same brainwashed behavior as the neocons, militants and dogmatists that ruined my country. Incidentally, any government you could name that vehemently condemns American behavior in the press continues to trade with them, buy their stocks, shake hands in secret, making for rampant hypocrisy. You personally are on a site frequented by Americans, tracking American made films, clicking the trailer. Let me ask you brother, what does that make you?

If this was a political forum I’d continue our debate but out of respect for the other forum members who are excited about this American made film that the international community will certainly spend millions to watch, the last word is yours.

I’m betting this rocket scientist hails from a nation famous for its assortment of cheeses, or something. I’d also bet that the irony of insulting America via an American invention (the internet) is lost on him.

      • The Flobbit

What a realistic, sad world he lives in.

      • Kevin

Maybe you should try to be responsible and not blame all your problems on America.

      • Guesto

Here’s a theory for you. Yes the war efforts have hurt the economy, but maybe the problem is the business world cannot keep up with the demand of everyone utilizing the internet and its incredibly cheap resources. The world continues to change at an incredible rate and we are venturing into new territories of economic development and we as a country have yet to meet that demand.

  • Kevin

    Looks unbelievable.

  • eternalozzie

looks kind of meh but I liked the first movie so I’ll go see this … one of the marvel franchises they did a good job rewriting.

    • The Flobbit

Kind of meh? Let’s break down the trailer:

1st Scene: Great to see Scarlett and Chris have some rapport that is not brimming with Whedon’s cheeky injokes. GOD those get tiring.

2nd Scene: Robert Redford is a brilliant addition to this film. The main reason I am looking forward to TWS is the promise of a political paranoia thriller. After the lack of subtlety of Thor 2, this is a good sign.

5th Scene: Those explosions in the street look really fake. Really Hollywood. Yawn…

      6. There is a black guy in a hospital bed while Cap and Black Widow look on. Pausing reveals it to be Nick Fury. Ooh…

      10. A team of soldiers led by the Winter Soldier fire in the streets. This is in the same scene as the explosions. Buck gets ten Nick Fury is put out of action here.

      12. BLACK WIDOW IN TROUBLE! I AM OFFICIALLY HOOKED.

      15. Cap’s oneliner is the elevator is a little strange. They couldn’t get out if THEY WANTED TO THEY’RE IN AN ELEVATOR! Who sent these guys? Winter Soldier? Buck gets 5 Redford turns out to be bad…

      16. Cap contemplates. Uh oh – Black Widow and Cap in an explosion. He is later seen to be carrying her limp body.

      18. Winter Soldier shoots some tiny little explosive device onto Nick Fury’s car, causing it to fake. Really lame. Car flips were cool back when the Dark Knight came out – and then because Nolan did it sans CGI. This looks shoddy, though that sidestep looks really cool. Cap then engages Winter Soldier hand-to-hand.

      19. Falcon gets some good scenes. First black superhero? Why are SHIELD’s planes firing on their own men – Falcon? Redford is in on this, guaranteed.

      21. More SHIELD planes firing on their own guys – Cap on a motorcycle, this time.

      22. A helicarrier falls and crashes to earth. Can’t say I like those things. Really silly – really heavy.

Well those are the most important parts of the trailer. I look forward to this more than any other Marvel movie, but I still look forward to Days of Future Past more. Overall, I think this is more than meh…

As for Redford’s character being bad, it brought to mind the name of another villainous politician from the Avengers books: Dell Rusk…one can only hope.

  • http://www.collider.com/ DNAsplitter

Looks fucking awesome! I’m glad with the look and feel for this one. As much as I enjoyed the 1st film it felt more like Indiana Jones/Rocketeer as it was a period piece that was a build up to the Avengers. Was a little nervous about the directors but honestly Marvel does a great job of grooming their talent and shaping their vision for their films that I knew that they must have showed some talent that we haven’t seen yet. Really suprised that it’s recieved an April release and not May as May is usually the kick off to the big summer tent pole films. Oh well the earlier the better.

Given that 90% of the first film took place in the 40′s and was an origin story set in WWII, it’s very difficult to make a sequel to that set in the present which “[looks]” like the first film.

dear matt goldberg, not everyone knows who the winter soldier is. thats why its not in the trailer. i understand that as a movie nerd who frequents the internet i’m bound to find out spoilers, but you should keep in mind that some people are just cruising through this website and just want to watch the trailer, and not find out the secret identity of the villain. and you’re still using has been survived? seriously dude just leave that whole segment out of your articles, for the common viewer and the grammar nut’s sake

    • JBug

Even if you don’t know of the winter soldier, it’s public knowledge who the winter solider is (like knowing that harvey dent is two-face or that the Osborne’s are bad guys). Marvel knows this, which means that either a) they will not treat it as if its a twist (meaning nothing was really spoiled in this article) or b) there will be a twist and it will be a surprise even for the comic book fans who are expecting what they already know of the winter soldier.

      • Kenny Smith

When they screened the footage at comic-con this year, I think it was Kevin Feige that put it really well…he basically said re: the winter soldier’s identity, it’s not so much a mystery for the audience, but a mystery to cap. That’s where the intrigue comes from, watching Steve realize who is behind the mask. Sure it might be ideal for websites to put a spoiler warning on every article mentioning “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” but to be honest, if I was a casual movie-goer who didn’t know the secret identity, I’d still probably look up a wikipedia article and find out anyway.

They screened parts of the movie already and the prologue to the title in the movie shows who Winter Soldier is. marvel isn’t making it a TWIST to us but using it as a writing point to dive deeper into Caps psyche. Not to mention there is a huge wide shot of “The dude with the silver arm” that clearly shows that it’s the same actor who played Bucky in the trailer. “But the smoke and fire covers his face” no it’s pretty fucking noticeable.

      • Grayden

Yeah, it’s called dramatic tension; writing 101. And it’s done intentionally.

      • JBug

Really? Thanks for the added value.

  • Greyson

When will SHIELD learn that flying helicariers are a bad idea!?

  • Brandon

The dialog brought out in the trailer makes me hopeful that they have a timely message to get across about freedom and liberty in America, especially when we are under the threat and fear of terrorism. What principles are we willing to give up in order to feel safe? This is definitely the kind of thought-provoking question writers have addressed in the Cap comics. Will we see that kind of bold writing in the movie? Something attracted Redford to this script, when he’s at an age where he can pick and choose his roles …. here’s hoping the movie lives up to what we see in the trailer.

    • Greyson

      That would be very exciting.

Yep, this is my main interest in the film. It’s interesting how Steve Rogers, will all of his old-fashioned ideals and unbridled patriotism, now awakens to what we all are discovering. How does this guy deal with this? I like Chris Evans portrayal, because you can really feel a sense of the character being in a fog, knowing he’s being lied to, but not wanting to admit it. Wanting to believe the America he grew up with still exists. And I really hope the character moves in a direction toward reclaiming that American ideal, because that’s fascinating. Much more interesting to me than Thor for example.

I thought it would have some of the same look/tone as the first movie, obviously this is set in modern day etc but it would have been cool to see some of that cross over so you have the feel its part of the same story…saying that I totally get why this looks the way it does. Just hope it doesn’t turn in to a by the books summer action movie and stands out as something special, Cap isn’t my favourite character but I enjoyed the first movie and his part in The Avengers, thought it was cool that they didn’t give away too much of The Winter Soldier, Falcon and Crossbones etc and Emily VanCamps character. Looks cool man, looks cool. Is it true that Hayley Atwell and Dominic Cooper will be making apperances?

Cap 1 was the worst of all the Marvel movies, closely followed by Iron man 3. This however looks AMAZING. Really amazing… apart from the winter soldier who looks like he just won 4th prize at a Cosplay comp.

As for all the US bashing going on in this thread by all the pathetic liberal morons, just take a little trip to a couple of non democratic countries and test out your freedom of speech and human rights there.

Do send me a video of the results, you naive unicorn riding arseholes.

(and I’m not a yank by the way)

    • Guest

Yeah I get you but if you look at women like Malala, she doesn’t need bullets to prove she’s tough, she got out of her own oppressive country, and she isn’t out buying bullets she can’t afford. And I am a yank, a patriot, sometimes an arsehole but I’ve never seen a unicorn.

Now back to the movie. One thing I can predict from the trailer is that Captain America will decipher that Shield is inducing fear, not freedom with their weapon hoarding – sound familiar? And that Nick Fury’s intentions might be honest ones, but not everyone in Shield has those intentions. *Cough* America. Captain America will begin to understand the threat that Shield has become, and question their ascent to unbridled power. He’ll be left with the notion that America needs to fix itself, before trying to *fix* the world.

You just said you thought this trailer was amazing, right? That’s because it completely parallels issues going on today. Now I am not a liberal, a conservative or any partisan label – just a concerned American, who is looking forward to this movie. I wasn’t. But this trailer was good. And I do wish the political speak could be dropped in favor of just discussing the merits of the film. The Flobbit had a good point, people could argue forever, and for what? To be right? No one is ever a hundred percent right. This movie illustrates that more than most superhero films. You kind of got it in the first Iron Man, but this one looks more thorough from a thematic perspective.
