Live-Action CAPTAIN PLANET Movie Announced

Captain Planet was a cartoon from the mid-90s that conjures up great nostalgia for those who watched it and pledged never to pollute ever again.  That’s why the Earth is as clean as it is right now: because of a cartoon where teenagers summoned a flying blue man to beat up polluters.  Now we’ve received a press release announcing that producer Don Murphy (Transformers: Dark of the Moon) and Cartoon Network are developing a live-action Captain Planet movie.

For those unfamiliar with the series, five teenagers across the globe, called “Planeteers”, received special rings that bestowed superpowers and together the rings could summon Captain Planet.  Individually, four of the rings could summon useful elements: Earth, Fire, Wind, and Water. The fifth ring was “Heart” aka “We Ran out of Ancient Elements”.  The Heart kid had the power to make people care and to speak with animals.  Maybe his power needs to be readjusted for the film.  However, he also had a pet monkey, so they have to keep that.  Hit the jump for the press release.

Cartoon Network Signs with Angry Filmworks to Develop CAPTAIN PLANET

Live-Action Feature Film

Producer of Transformers Film Trilogy Tapped to Create Movie Based on World’s First Eco-Hero

Cartoon Network has signed a development agreement with action-adventure producer Don Murphy and partner Susan Montford and their company Angry Filmworks to develop a live-action motion picture based on the groundbreaking, environment-saving animated hero, Captain Planet and the Planeteers, it was announced today by Stuart Snyder, president and COO of Turner Broadcasting System Inc.’s Animation, Young Adults and Kids Media division (AYAKM).  The agreement gives Murphy and his company the exclusive rights to develop and package the property and advance it towards production.

Murphy and Angry Filmworks are most notably credited for the highly successful action-adventure franchise, Transformers (2007), Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009) and Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011).  Murphy and Montford together produced the upcoming Hugh Jackman blockbuster Real Steel with Executive Producer Steven Spielberg.  The company also is responsible for such action-oriented films as Shoot ‘Em Up (2007), The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003), Apt Pupil (1998) and Natural Born Killers (1994).  Angry Filmworks formed in 1998.

“The messages of Captain Planet are even more relevant today,” said Snyder.  “We feel this team can bring the world’s first eco-hero to life in a powerful motion picture that is not only pertinent but entertaining.”

“We are extremely excited about bringing the good Captain back to life,” said Murphy.  “His adventures are known worldwide and he is recognized across generations.  We expect to make a spectacular series of films with the amazing team at Cartoon Network.”

“With the earthquakes, tornadoes, melting icebergs and all the other problems threatening the world right now, Earth really needs her greatest defender,” said Montford.

In an effort to inform younger viewers about serious environmental issues, legendary cable entrepreneur Ted Turner partnered with DIC Enterprises in 1990 to create the world’s first animated environmental series, Captain Planet and the Planeteers. The series was about a group of young people who combine their special powers (The Planeteers) to summon Captain Planet, an environmental superhero, to battle the world’s worst eco-villains.

Captain Planet and the Planeteers premiered in fall 1990, airing domestically and internationally in syndication and on cable networks TBS and TNT.  Six full seasons of the series were produced in the original run of the series, featuring the voice talents of multiple guest celebrities, including Whoopi Goldberg (Gaia), Meg Ryan (Dr. Blight), Martin Sheen (Sly Sludge), Edward Asner (Hoggish Greedly), James Coburn (Looten Plunder), Dean Stockwell (Duke Nukem) and Sting (Zarm).  Winning multiple Environmental Media Awards across its production, Captain Planet and the Planeteers also scored several Daytime Emmy nominations.

Cartoon Network (CartoonNetwork.com), currently seen in more than 99 million U.S. homes and 166 countries around the world, is Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.’s ad-supported cable service now available in HD offering the best in original, acquired and classic entertainment for youth and families.  Nightly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. (ET, PT), Cartoon Network shares its channel space with Adult Swim, a late-night destination showcasing original and acquired animated and live-action comedy programming for young adults 18-34.

Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., a Time Warner company, creates and programs branded news; entertainment; animation and young adult; and sports media environments on television and other platforms for consumers around the world.

wouldn’t it be great if this was a geo political movie in the vein of Syriana? I wish… I really really wish.

Cap was less about earthquakes and tornadoes and more about oil spills and nuclear disasters, but he’s as relevant today as ever.

I have my reservations about a live-action movie though and I’d rather see a series reboot.

It always boggled my mind why those chose Heart as the fifth power, as opposed to Lightning. That would have been way more useful than heart.

Though I guess they needed a way to include animals, as they are a large part of history.

    • Alex-mansy

Heart is a metaphor for empathy so in regards to saving the planet it’s the most important of the elements.

Also a captain planet film sounds awesome. They had some great characters.

Mati was a native south-american boy. Probably indigenous.

      • Elsharkwalker

Hispanic means from Spanish Decent. It is actually an ethnic background as opposed to a race and most people from south america would consider themselves hispanic. It really bothers me how ignorant most people in the United States when it comes to recognizing and differentiating cultures outside their own little bubble. For example, someone may see an influx of Mexican immigrants inside their community and just assume everyone who speaks Spanish is Mexican and likes to eat Tacos. I can’t believe, however, that someone wouldn’t realize that someone from South America is Hispanic (unless from one of the three countries where Spanish/Portuguese are not spoken….. yeah there are three countries in South America that speak English, French and Dutch respectively) Mati though, is not from one of those countries…. so yeah he is Hispanic.

actually, heart is also an element in pagan religions(akasha) although it works differently opposed to the series(instead of talking to animals and such, its supposed to be energy which connects all of the elements).
which is funny, because from what I remember the element of heart played a big role in the series, I’m not sure though as I haven’t watched the cartoon in so long.

copied and pasted that from my comments =P

Even as a kid it pissed me off that the American Planeteer was a screw up who had to be constantly be reigned in by the others. Little did I know that when I grew up the same left wing propaganda would be repackaged and swallowed wholesale by half the adult population, i.e., An Inconvenient Truth.

    • Grimcicle

      Oh, piss off.

      • Gideon

        Grim,

That was a pretty intelligent response!

It is true. Captain Planet was nothing more than Ted Turner’s chance to indoctrinate children into Earth worship. The show had the pagan goddess of earth for crying out loud…

Anyone who paid attention in 5th grade should know that global warming is a crock.

The show didn’t even make sense. What was the motive behind the bad guys polluting, what were they hoping to gain? I asked that as a young person when this show was new… I watched GI Joe growing up too and I knew what Cobra’s motive was. Cobra Commander wanted to rule over the earth’s population and Destro wanted to be the lone arms dealer on earth.

The show was just plain stupid. I hope the movie bombs.

      • Maria D J Mejia

So, what you’re saying is, that we shouldn’t care about the only earth we have?
Unless you come up with a method of inter-stellar travel to colonize other T3 planets, don’t say this is brainwashing anybody.

  • Sam

Brandon Routh for Captain Planet please??

  • iamtryingtobelieve

Holy sh*t it’s like a dream come true! The synopsis should read:

Al Gore (himself) has been kidnapped & brainwashed by the shadowy Big Oil Team (Christoph Waltz, Gary Oldman, Christian Bale, Brandon Routh) and their leader (Michael Ironside). Once a champion of conservation, former Vice President Gore is now an outspoken fan of using fossil fuels recklessly, & often. Fearing that something sinister has happened to their hero, a group of eco-friendly youths, calling themselves the Planeteers (Elle Fanning, Taylor Lautner, Jaden Smith, Riley Griffiths, Jennifer Lawrence) use the powers of Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, & Heart to call forth the green mulleted superhero Captain Planet (Brendan Fraser) to set things right.
Directed by Oliver Stone (Platoon, JFK), Captain Planet is a globe-spanning adventure with a powerful message of friendship, courage, & care of our environment that is sure to delight the whole family.

    Call me, Hollywood.

We’re the planeteers, you can be one too! Saving our planet is the thing to do! Looting and polluting is not the way, here’s what Captain Planet has to say!

    The power is yours!

    – Does the fact that I’ve written the above straight from nostalgic childhood memory mean that I’m a shoe-in to pay $24 to see this film in 3D with a large popcorn and coke?

    Pretty much.

Wuh? No! Why is this needed again?

    • D. White

WHY? Hmmm…does millions and millions of gallons of oil being poured into the Gulf of Mexico ring a bell? Or how about the 500 plus mountains that have been blown up for coal in Appalachia all the while the people there live with poisoned water supplies, air laced with rock dust and forced to live in poverty? Or the irradiation of the Rain Forest in South America? Or the Martin County coal sludge spill? Or the many coal fired power plants spewing toxins in the air and into children’s lungs. Or an agenda in DC to limit regulations that protect people from harm of polluting industries for financial gain? The list can go on for days. So ask again, why should we have a superhero who fights this stuff?

  • Sloppy J

    This sounds absolutely amazing!!

No . . wait; the other thing . . this sounds like the most unecessary movie adaptation ever!! A buffed-out, cheerfully effete blue guy picking up litter and wiping down oily seabirds? I’ve never heard of Captain Planet, but that’s what comes to mind . .

If this is made as a comedy, I’m totally on board.

  • Rae

All I gotta say is hey, at least they’re trying. I think the movie’s going to be awful and I never much liked the series, but they TRY. What do cartoons now sell to kids? You need a boyfriend, dangerous situations are fun, and everything in the whole world is about yourself. At least Captain Planet attempted to give people better morals.
I’ll probably watch the movie for some laughs, but people complaining about how it’s unnecessary and the cartoon was dumb is uncalled for. Look at some of the movies people watch these days! Look at how things are adapted into movies! At least this one has a purpose other than “hurr hurr shes hot and he’s saving the world by being a douche and destroying shit.”

Wow…This is gonna be a propaganda film about Global Warming featuring Al Gore and polar bears standing on a small block of ice isn’t it….

    Give it up Gore…you suck!

    • D. White

I dare you to come live at the foot of a mountaintop removal coal extraction site in Appalachia and have to live with poisoned water and breath in air filled with rock dust as you watch your friends and family die just so someone else can turn on a light bulb. I bet you would sing a different tune then.

I would pay TRIPLE to see Captain Planet take on the Coal Industry. I want to see him duke it out with a dragline on a mountaintop removal site. Be nice to have a superhero save my home for once instead of my elected officials allowing WV and other parts of Appalachia to be blown up and irradiated for coal.

im 16 and i think this was the most relevent cartoon to date in fact its awesome for multiple reasons 1)it was about getting rid of pollution
2)his catchphrase was empowering (who doesnt want to hear the power is theres)
    3) awesome voice actors
and 4) the best hero ever with every power ever (including the power to make vehicles and weapons and things outta recycleables)
and 5)heart could be used to get money from people (“hey man can i borrow some money?”
    “no” *starts walking away*
    “heart”
*guy turns around and hands him wallet, car keys, deed to house, etc*)

This would be awesome, I used to love this show as a kid. And for all those of you going, they had no motives, it was brain washing kids, global warming is untrue etc, you have missed the point, as a kid I barely even noticed the enviro-stuff when I was watching it as a kid. I mean it had a blue-skinned super hero with a green mullet, what could be more awesome? That is the point, This would be awesome!

  • Kris

Being a Captain Planet fan, I will give this one a shot. All I can say is out of all the ’90s cartoon movies they can make, this had better be one that they get right
