It appears that even major studios are jumping on the Christsploitation train, and now Paramount has released the first trailer for Captive. The film stars Kate Mara as a single mom wrestling with drug addition. Her life gets harder when a criminal (David Oyelowo) goes on the run and takes her hostage after killing the judge assigned to his case. Thankfully, she’s recently been handed a copy of The Purpose Driven Life, a book by evangelical Christian author Rick Warren. Through the power of Warren’s book, the woman is able to form a connection with her captor.

I’m not against religious movies, but Captive looks like a painfully cloying commercial for Warren’s book. I’m just shocked they got good actors like Mara and Oyelowo to lead when the true star appears to be The Purpose Driven Life. Perhaps they were moved by the fact that the movie is based on a true story, and the woman was able to use The Purpose Driven Life to persuade her captor to release her. She also gave him crystal meth. It was the one time crystal meth ever did anything good, and Warren’s book gets all the credit. Poor crystal meth.

Check out the Captive trailer below. The film opens September 18th, and also stars Leonor Varela, Jessica Oyelowo, Mimi Rogers, and Michael K. Williams.
