Hit the jump for more details on both projects.

THR reportscarey-mulligan-nancy-and-danny that Mulligan is in talks to star as a gold-digging woman whose big-city dreams have turned to dust.  She uses a dim-witted man in a get-rich-quick scheme in order to land a high school crush, but her plans quickly go awry.  The black comedy is being compared to Gus Van Sant’s 1995 picture, To Die For, which starred Nicole Kidman in a breakout role.  Mulligan has already broken through by starring in films like Drive and Shame, and will next be seen in Baz Luhrman’s The Great Gatsby opposite Leonardo DiCaprio next summer.

Deadline reports that Fanning is set to star in Olive’s Ocean, with a script drawn up by Christina Hammonds Reed.  The plot centers on a teen whose classmate dies in a tragic accident.  Upon finding that the deceased girl had secretly hoped to be her friend, Fanning’s character spends a summer soul searching.  Fanning is currently filming alongside Angelina Jolie in Disney’s Maleficent.  Here’s a look at the book description from Olive’s Ocean (via Amazon):

Sometimes life can change in an instant

Martha Boyle and Olive Barstow could have been friends, but they weren’t. Weeks after a tragic accident, all that is left are eerie connections between the two girls, former classmates who both kept the same secret without knowing it. Now, even while on vacation at the ocean, Martha can’t stop thinking about Olive. Things only get more complicated when Martha begins to like Jimmy Manning, a neighbor boy she used to despise. What is going on? Can life for Martha be the same ever again?
