The first trailer for Roman Polanski’s Carnage has gone online and the movie looks terrific.  Based on Yasmina Reza’s play God of Carnage, the story follows two sets of parents who come together to discuss a fight between their children.  However, what should be a simply discussion over a trivial matter falls to pieces and this trailer does a great job of showing the influence of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? mixed with lots of humor and a little bit of drama.  It’s not the kind of film audiences expect from Polanski and that’s partially what makes it so exciting.  The other part comes from the great cast of Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly, Christoph Waltz, and Kate Winslet.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Carnage will play at the Venice Film Festival and the New York Film Festival.  It opens December 16th.

Movie looks really good but isnt polanski still technically a fugitive from america because he raped a 13year old girl?

Look, what Roman did was fucked up to that little girl but that mama allowed her daughter to head off with Roman to Jack Nicholson’s house where he slipped her a mickey and did his business.
The mother knew goddam well that if she played her cards right, her kid could maybe be a star. Hollywood is full of fucking sell outs.
The mom pimped her kid out to America’s top film director for the prospect of fame and fortune.

      Great cast!
But um, this type of experimental theatre was done by Woody Allen in his movie “Scenes from the mall”.
The characters never leave a general area and they talk and talk.
Don’t expect the Transformer crowd to appreciate this movie.
Damn, Kate gets nice and sweaty. Yum.
I heard the ending has Mel Gibson blowing everyone away with a remington 22 gauge shot gun.

Poof! whose afraid of virginia woolf? not me not me not me. Edward Albee is cool. Martha my dear Jodie Foster Wallace, Kate Winslet is Honey all Over..no but ya it looks pretty good, looks like it’ll be the first good Jodie Foster movie since Contact (not that Inside Man counts as a Jodie Foster movie, let’s just hope she keeps her Beaver in her pants) John C owns the dramedy, Waltz has that comic timing down as well…i want to see it get darker than this trailer i am sure it will(Roman who?)

Looks awesome and that poster is great too.

Looks great, but I still find it incredibly difficult to like his films based on his despicable past.

The revelation of this much information in the trailer is inexcusable. Some of the moments — such as dropping the cell phone in the vase of flowers — drew GASPS from the audience in the theater every night in the stage production, and it is one of the turning points of the plot. The trailer has even mentioned (though, thank God, has not shown) the single most startling moment in the whole story.

it’s up to Polanski’s directing and editing to make these over the top performances from his great actors look great and not alienating.

i’ve heard there was confirmation that Desplat will again be scoring a Polanski film. if Desplat gives another zany crazy offbeat score for this then this may be a knockout.

come on Polanski, you’ve made a great film, follow it up with a great film aswell. because with a movie like this, if doesn’t work, it won’t just be a failure, but an embarrassment as well.

OMG! Sweet, sweet Kate Winslet has turned into a psycho bitch! LOL

I will never watch a film by this bastard. You could not pay me to support anything that he has a hand in creating. He should be hung.
