Disney has released another trailer for Cars 2 and it’s a lot better than yesterday’s as it focuses on Michael Caine’s character who is a British spy named Finn McMissile.  While I’m not the biggest fan of the first Cars, I understand why Pixar and Disney have made the sequel: money.  From what I understand, the first Cars has generated huge money for the studios as it’s the most successful Pixar movie in terms of merchandising.  When you generate that kind of cash, you make a sequel.  The fact is, while a lot of us might not be on board with the need for a Cars 2, having a lot of extra money in the bank might lead Pixar to take a chance on a more risky film down the road.  What I’m saying is, don’t be too hard on them.

Hit the jump to check out the new trailer and some cool retro posters.  Cars 2 gets released June 24 and it features the voices of Owen Wilson, Larry the Cable Guy, Michael Caine, Tony Shalhoub, Emily Mortimer and more.

Here’s the extended trailer followed by the one that was released yesterday.  They really are a lot different.

  1. Another reason for the sequel, I think (and this is mostly speculation), has to do with the fact that the first Cars had so many problems during the making, with Joe Ranft dying midway through production and Lasseter having to take over, that Pixar never really felt satisfied with the final product. Not to say Cars is a bad movie, not at all, but it’s unquestionably Pixar’s weakest feature, and I think the company wanted to go back and really do the characters and setting justice.

But you’re right, Cars may not have made as much at the box office as other Pixar films, but in terms of merchandising it is HUGE. I used to work in retail stores at Disney World, and we sold more Cars stuff than any other single product line. It’s insane.
