Pixar aired a new TV spot for Cars 2 at the Daytona 500 this weekend.  I’m still waiting to be excited for this movie, but nothing I’ve seen so far has managed to do that.  If anything, finishing off the TV spot with a Japanese toilet joke is a bit disheartening.

Hit the jump to check out the TV spot as well as two new images from the film.  Cars 2 features the voices of Owen Wilson, Larry the Cable Guy, Michael Caine, Tony Shalhoub, Cheech Marin, Michael Keaton, Emily Mortimer, Jason Isaacs, Joe Mantegna, Peter Jacobson, Thomas Kretschmann, Eddie Izzard, and John Turturro.  The film opens in 3D on June 24th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Cars 2:

Star racecar Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) and the incomparable tow truck Mater (voice of Larry the Cable Guy) take their friendship to exciting new places in “Cars 2” when they head overseas to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest car. But the road to the championship is filled with plenty of potholes, detours and hilarious surprises when Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage. Torn between assisting Lightning McQueen in the high-profile race and towing the line in a top-secret spy mission, Mater’s action-packed journey leads him on an explosive chase through the streets of Japan and Europe, trailed by his friends and watched by the whole world. Adding to the fast-paced fun is a colorful new all-car cast that includes secret agents, menacing villains and international racing competitors.

I wasn’t excited for Cars when I went to see it, but I love the movie now. I’m not excited for this one, except that I’m pretty sure Pixar will pull it off again. :)

It’s looking like this will try be the what Toy Story 2 was to Toy Story. Not as original or as universally appealing, but a rapid fire series of humorous situations and danger for heightened entertainment. Thing is Toy Story 2 had a pretty deep heart that took the pace to a near stand still in order to reel the audience all the way in. Haven’t seen a trace of that in these previews, but it IS Pixar we’re talking about here. It wouldn’t have been green lit without a heart.

It’s fun to see Pixar make some money with sequels at the same time other studios are finding their way into successful and excellent original CGI features (Tangled, Despicable Me, How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda). I can just see Pixar deciding to bank on a couple of safer moneymakers like Toy Story 3 and Cars 2 while they knew they were coming up with Wall•E and Up. Those were risky to say the least!

I bet we see a flip flop with the other studios bringing sequels (with Dreamworks it is confirmed already) while Pixar brings out their riskier originals again. For family films it’s win-win as long as the quality stays up there!

I bet cars 2 will be great. Pixar movies almost always have bad trailers and tv spots, but they always turn out great.
