Christopher Nolan‘s sci-fi film Interstellar has been busy over the last couple of months rounding up an incredible cast.  Matthew McConaughey is set to play the lead in “a heroic interstellar voyage to the furthest reaches of our scientific understanding.”  Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine, Jessica Chastain, and Bill Irwin have all signed to join the picture, and today, we’ve learned that another tremendous addition has come on board.  Speaking to Elle Magazine (via Nolan Fans), Casey Affleck told the publication at a screening of his upcoming drama Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, “I’ve got a movie coming out at Thanksgiving called Out Of The Furnace,’ and I’m going to work on a Chris Nolan movie in the fall.”

Affleck is a notable addition not only because he’s incredibly talented, but also because he rarely does tent-pole pictures and the ones he has done are on the comedic side (Ocean’s Trilogy, Tower Heist).  While it’s possible he could be playing a comic-relief role, Nolan movies don’t really have those.  We’ll find out when Interstellar opens on November 7, 2014.

This is a Nolan film so there probably won’t be any comedic relief.

    MINOR SPOILERS

He’s probably playing one of McConaughey’s sons or playing one of the robots.

    • GrimReaper07

Is the script out? How do you know?

      • axalon

Was sent an early draft of the script

      • Jason Richards

I highly doubt you have a copy of the script. Nolan barely gives the actors scripts even weeks before production is about to begin. The only people that have seen Nolans draft are Nolan, his wife, and possibly Paramount and Warner Bros.

      • yea

axalon is probably Jeff Robinov. He has nothing else to do since he lost his job.

      • indy42

        axalon is correct.

There is an early (March 2008) version of
the script floating around out there. This was the Jonathan Nolan
draft, before Christopher did a theoretically major re-write. So it’s a
very, very early draft that may ultimately only have aspects shared
        with the final product.

      • axalon

        Okay, believe what you want.

The script I read was from 2008 and wasn’t originally written by Nolan which is probably how it got leaked. The revisions he did on the script will probably never see the light of day until after it comes out.

If you’re interested in plot points:

There are several highly intelligent/articulate robots in the film that interact with and communicate with the characters.

McConaghey’s character – Cooper – has two sons. One’s named Murph after Murphy’s Law.

Ken Watabe is playing the leader of the Chinese space team.

The movie has a section that deals with the ‘bulk’, the space between universes.

I can keep going if you’d like.

Well…? Continue, but do not give anything away.

an old draft leaked online. jonathan nolan’s draft not chris

      • pam

@ Jason Richards. There was a earlier Interstellar script ( only written by Jonathan Nolan ) that leaked over the internet.

I believe Casey Affleck will probably portray the robot or the other crew member on going to space.

    • André Camilo

Well, reportedly McConaughey is married to Hathaway’s character. Casey Affleck will play their son? Are you serious, man?

      • axalon

That’s reportedly incorrect. McConaughey’s character’s wife is already dead. Hathaway plays a character on the team he goes with on this journey. She does end up as his love interest though.

Again, I read an early draft so it might be different now, but I doubt it.

“This is a Nolan film so there probably won’t be any credible characterization or plotting”
Just thought I’d fix up this sentence for you. You’re welcome.

Incoming Nolan hater that posts on every Nolan related news. Please take shelter.

    • Lulz 2 B Had

They aren’t so much ‘haters’ as genuine lovers of cinema who only bash Nolan in an attempt to help his fans help themselves realize that he’s hardly the cinematic titan that they claim he is. If the Nolan loves was not so disproportionate to his actual talent, than I’m sure no one would feel the need to “hate” on him. However, he’s a mediocre writer, visually inept director and it’s all well and good if people want to pay for, and encourage, mediocrity but when they try to shout down critiques of his work, act superciliously towards people who aren’t fans, and generally act like cretins, than it behooves those of intellectual integrity to respond in kind.

To the man (griz) who will post the stale joke about peeing underneath this comment: I know you feel the need to play the part of White Knight to Nolan but, for the love fo GOD, come up with a new insult. It’s so, so played out. Take the ten minutes, come up with something different and then post that ad nauseum. Please. Everyone on these boards is sick of it.

On second thought, everyone’s been sick and tired of me for ages and yet i’m still here like a cancer on these message boards, so you know what? Have at it! Heck, i’ll post it myself so you can’t get the satisfaction! And speaking of satisfaction, does anybody know if there is a Chris Nolan impersonator that i can hire to come to my house, gather my family in the living room, drop his pants and start pissing in my open mouth while yelling “ACTION”? I’d really like that, in fact, i’m pretty sure that it’ll be the best birthday ever! I’m willing to pay $300 cash. $350 if he can make it taste like asparagus.

      • Lulz 2 B Had

Lulz. Griz B Gotten to. Griz. I’ll keep it civil if you do. You’re the one everyone’s sick of.

This is my least favorite title Collider has had….

  • ska7triumph

As exctied as I am about the cast updates and the pedigree of talent, I better not read Jonah’s draft of this thing and see that it’s an lily-white cast. Sorry, this is a sci-fi flick – and these guys have more than enough strong actors of different shades to make their stories work. It’s becoming a thorn in my side that even the best auteurs barely put together a multi-cultral cast.

    • axalon

I wouldn’t worry, there’s definitely a very strong Chinese presence in the movie.

  • Bloost

Eames was a comic relief in Inception. Just because he wasn’t in-your-face doesn’t mean he wasn’t funny.

    • JK1193

Agreed. And in fact, the banter between Hardy and Gordon-Levitt helped the film remain grounded, I felt.

  • Clicker

So far the cast has been incredibly underwhelming, for a Nolan film. Michael Caine and Casey seem like the only redeeming cast members, in my opinion.

    • Strong Enough

Jessica Chastain Anne hathaway and Matthew are all underwhelming? you sir do not know movies

      • Strong Enough 2 Fail

You like Nolan. YOU DON”T KNOW MOVIES ASS HANDLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ready to admit my dick is very large and you love it? come on! it’s okay!

      • Strong Enough 2 P in my mouth

Lulz! It’s not the size of the dick, its what’s INSIDE that counts! And speaking of what comes out of a dick, do you by any chance know if there is a Chris Nolan impersonator that i can hire to come to my house, gather my family in the living room, drop his pants and start pissing in my open mouth while yelling “ACTION”? I’d really like that, in fact, i’m pretty sure that it’ll be the best birthday ever! I’m willing to pay $300 cash. $350 if he can make it taste like asparagus.

and you would know that since you take A LOT of dicks in the mouth right? especially Nolan’s since you talk about him constantly! you must like it!

Yeah, except Affleck DIDN’T PLAY a “comedic relief” role in ‘Tower Heist’. He was the straight man. I know, I know: it must be really DIFFICULT for a FILM CRITIC to understand the basic character types.

  • Giu

Great to see Nolan stepping out of his comfort zone. Maconaughey (whatever), Hathaway, Caine, Chastain, Watanabe (?), and Affleck are all extremely solid actors. I love Nolan. He’s not a god or the second coming of Kubrick, but he’s incredibly original, has a great eye for action, characterization, plot, and suspense.

Memento is probably the greatest psychological thriller since Vertigo. By far his best film!

    • Bloost

The second coming of Kubrick is called Paul Thomas Anderson.

      • pam

Hell no ! PTA is no where near Stanley Kubrick. Anderson needs a great editor
