In 2011, The Amazing Spider-Man went to Comic-Con, and showed off the first footage of The Lizard (the reaction on Twitter from my peers seemed to be "That looks like Killer Croc, and I hope they do more work on the CGI"). The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set to kick off the 2014 summer movie season, and so it looks like Sony is bringing the movie for a panel at this summer's San Diego Comic-Con, which runs from July 18 - 21st. Jamie Foxx, who plays the villain Electro, tells Yahoo! Movies, "Now I'm just waiting to get to Comic-Con and see how people respond to it." People will probably be enthusiastic. They love Spider-Man, and while The Amazing Spider-Man is a misfire, it didn't kill off interest in the reboot. There's still a great cast, and hopefully the script is stronger this time around.

The film also stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Dane DeHaan, Shailene Woodley, Paul Giamatti, Felicity Jones, Chris Cooper, and Sally Field. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in 3D on May 2, 2014.

[This is a re-post from the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Before Midnight opens today in limited release. Click here to find out when the film will open near you.]

Richard Linklater's 1995 film Before Sunrise is a love story. His 2004 follow-up, Before Sunset, is a life story. His latest film, Before Midnight, is a lived-in love story. The relationship of Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) resumes at its most complicated point where we see what happens nine years after true love. Once again, Linklater and his co-writers (also Hawke and Delpy) have delivered an honest and thoughtful romance that truly taps into the maturity of its lead characters. Although the story falters when the focus pulls back from its protagonists, Before Midnight firmly establishes the trilogy as a unique and remarkable accomplishment that manages to always find the humor, tragedy, frustration, and desire in a brutally honest love story.

Nine years after the ending of Before Sunset, Jesse and Celine are now married with twin daughters. Jesse and Celine have just spent the summer in Greece with Hank (Jesse's son from his previous marriage), and the film opens with Hank flying back home to America. Jesse feels wracked with guilt because he can't spend more time with Hank, Celine fears Jesse will resent her for not moving to America so he can be with his son, but the couple still loves each other. But the dreamy, dewy-eyed, star-crossed love is gone. In its place is a more complicated relationship ...

I know many a Harry Potter fan made the pilgrimage to Universal Orlando Resort to down a butterbeer when The Wizarding World of Harry Potter opened. As a lifelong Simpsons fan, I now have my own pilgrimage to make. Universal Studios announced they will build a real-life Springfield to accompany The Simpsons Ride. The concept art (previewed above) shows the Kwik-E-Mart, Moe's Tavern, Krusty Burger, The Android's Dungeon & Baseball Card Shop, Lard Lad Donuts, Krustyland, and a Duff brewery. Simpsons creator Matt Groening has previously chosen not to license Duff Beer, concerned it would encourage kids to drink. But the press release promises, "And yes – there will be Duff Beer, brewed exclusively for Universal Orlando."

There's more food joints, the Jebediah statue (to embiggen the smallest patron), and a new attraction, Kang & Kodos’ Twirl ‘n’ Hurl. I must go. Hit the jump for the press release with all the details and the full concept art.

ENTER THE WORLD OF SPRINGFIELD LIKE NEVER BEFORE - ONLY AT UNIVERSAL ORLANDO RESORT!

ORLANDO, Fla. (May 23, 2013) - Woo Hoo! Springfield, hometown to America’s favorite animated family, The Simpsons, comes to life at Universal Orlando Resort this summer.

The expansive, new area within Universal Studios will be anchored by the mega-attraction, The Simpsons Ride, and will allow guests to enter the world of The Simpsons like never before. It will be the only place in the world where guests can walk the streets of Springfield. It will include a brand-new outdoor attraction, places and foods ...

Opening in limited release this weekend is one of the best films you’re going to see this year: Before Midnight, director Richard Linklater’s follow-up to Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. The new film takes place 18 years after Before Sunrise and 9 years after Before Sunset, and sees Celine (Julie Delpy) and Jesse (Ethan Hawke) navigating married life on a trip to Greece. Like the previous films, it’s a lot of walking and talking, but it absolutely works because of the intimate and lived-in chemistry between the lead actors, who also co-wrote the film with Linklater. I can honestly say this is one of the best films I’ve seen in a long time, and even if you haven’t seen the previous films, you should see it when it comes to a theater near you.

The other day, I landed an video interview with Hawke and Delpy here in Los Angeles. We talked about whether they were more nervous writing the 3rd installment than the previous films due to fan expectations, deleted scenes, how they once tried to improvise and failed miserably, did they make any radical changes to the story during the writing process, the reasons why they filmed the sequel with little fanfare, and a lot more. Hit the jump to watch.

And if you missed my extended video interview with Linklater, watch it here.

The moment you’re famous enough that your voice becomes recognizable, the animated movie offers must come pouring in, but even after years of being in the spotlight, Epic only marks Amanda Seyfried’s very first foray into the world of voice work. She plays Mary Katherine, the daughter of Professor Bomba (voiced by Jason Sudeikis) who’s essentially given up everything for an obsessive pursuit to prove that there are tiny warriors living in the forest. Like everyone else, MK isn’t buying it, but when Queen Tara (voiced by Beyonce Knowles) has no choice but to shrink MK down to Leaf Man size so she can help save the forest, MK realizes her father’s been right all along.

With Epic on its way to a May 24th release, Seyfried sat down in New York City to talk about making the film and more. We ran through what drew her to the project, her love of the forest, the challenge of tapping into her imagination while in a sound booth, the physicality involved in doing voice work, how voicing an animated character compares to singing live on set, and the awkwardness of non-dialogue voice work. Seyfried also offered an update on her upcoming projects including Lovelace and Z for Zachariah. Hit the jump to watch.

Amanda Seyfried (Les Miserables) will join the cast of the Noah Baumbach-directed midlife crisis comedy, While We’re Young.
Gael Garcia Bernal (The Motorcycle Diaries) will lead Jon Stewart's directorial debut, Rosewater.

Hit the jump for more on each casting announcement.

The Wrap reports that Seyfried will join Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts and Adam Driver in While We're Young. The picture centers on a married couple (Stiller and Watts) that strike up an unlikely friendship with a free-spirited younger couple (Driver and Seyfried), the latter of whom makes homemade ice cream. Seyfried will be heard in this weekend's animated film Epic. She's currently filming Seth MacFarlane's A Million Ways to Die in the West and has recently signed on to star in Craig Zobel's Z for Zacharia.

Also from The Wrap is word that Bernal will be the lead in Rosewater, Stewart's adaptation of the 2011 book Then They Came For Me: A Family's Story of Love, Captivity and Survival, from co-writers Maziar Bahari and Aimee Molloy. The story follows Bahari, played by Bernal, "a journalist who leaves his pregnant fiancé behind in London while he travels to Iran to spend a week covering the country's presidential elections. Some new set photos from Gareth Edwards' Godzilla reboot have popped up. As expected in a giant rampaging monster movie, the images show scenes of wanton destruction of a small Japanese fishing village and what appears to be schoolchildren fleeing from said monster. Unfortunately, our only look at the title monster is a giant blue screen that towers over the set. Be sure to check out previous galleries of set photos here, here and here.

Godzilla stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn, Bryan Crantson, Ken Watanabe, and Richard T. Jones and opens in 3D on May 16, 2014. See the images after the jump.

Fast & Furious 6 is a machine running close to peak performance. The Fast & Furious franchise has been stripped down and rebuilt through six iterations. It's gone from racing to revenge to a heist and now it's forced to find its own identity. After finding a good group of characters and upping the stakes in the action scenes, there's finally a level of confidence instead of simply watching fast cars drive around. The new movie struts into the room and proudly proclaims, "If we're going to be goofy and loud, we're going to be the goofiest, loudest movie we can be!" It's almost admirable in its own twisted way. After four films, Justin Lin's direction has finally matched the ambition of his set pieces, and aside from indulging in the "family is everything" treacle, Fast & Furious 6 is easily the best film in the franchise yet.

After stealing a vault full of money in Fast Five, the gang is resting easy in non-extradition countries. They're called out of early retirement when Agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and his partner Riley (Gina Carano) need help to bring down Owen Shaw (Luke Evans), a bad guy (I really don't know if he's a terrorist, a mercenary, or what) who is using his own team of car thieves to steal parts for a highly-dangerous and highly-lucrative WMD. Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) agrees to help when he discovers Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), who supposedly died in the fourth movie, is alive and working with ...

The best film I've seen so far this year is Joshua Oppenheimer's The Act of Killing. Produced by Werner Herzog and Errol Morris, the documentary focuses on executioners from 1965-66 Indonesia who were allowed to murder practically anyone they wanted, and are still treated as heroes today. Because of their utter lack of remorse, Oppenheimer asks them to direct recreations of their atrocities. The trailer hints at the dark and twisted plot without giving away too much. But even by showing scenes from near the end of the movie, this is a film that can't be spoiled. No trailer can recreate the absolutely chilling experience of watching this documentary.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer, and click here to read my review from SXSW. The Act of Killing opens July 19th.

Via The Film Stage.

Here's the official synopsis for The Act of Killing:
In this chilling and inventive documentary, executive produced by Errol Morris (The Fog of War) and Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man), the filmmakers examine a country where death squad leaders are celebrated as heroes, challenging them to reenact their real-life mass killings in the style of the American movies they love. The hallucinatory result is a cinematic fever dream, an unsettling journey deep into the imaginations of mass murderers and the shockingly banal regime of corruption and impunity they inhabit. Shaking audiences at the 2012 Toronto and Telluride Film Festivals, The Act of Killing is an unprecedented film and, according to the Los Angeles Times, “could well change how ...

Producer Joe Roth does enjoy his fairy-tale reimaginings. His recent films including Alice in Wonderland, Snow White and the Huntsman, Oz the Great and Powerful, and the upcoming Maleficent, which is the tale of Sleeping Beauty told from the villain's perspective. Since Alice and Oz were both monster hits, it's not surprise that Roth is now planning another fairy-tale* movie. According to Deadline, Roth has picked up the rights for Soman Chainani's new young adult novel, The School for Good and Evil. The story takes place in a school where students are chosen and trained to become heroes or villains. The beautiful Sophie expects to be a princess in the School for Good while her homely best friend Agatha readies herself to be a witch in the School for Evil. But when they arrive, their roles are reversed. It sounds like a fun premise that's reminiscent of the opening of Wicked. The book is the first in a planned trilogy, so Universal Pictures' seven-figure deal makes even more sense when a potential franchise is at stake.

Deadline reports that Chainani will co-write the script with her former screenwriting professor Malia Scotch Marmo (Hook). Hit the jump for the official synopsis of The School for Good and Evil.

Though production is already well underway on director Bryan Singer’s sequel X-Men: Future Past in Canada, a late addition to the cast has been made. Singer announced today on Twitter that American Horror Story star Evan Peters will play Quicksilver in the star-studded superhero pic, though this may make things quite complicated for Marvel’s The Avengers 2. In comics lore, Quicksilver is a mutant capable of moving and thinking at superhuman speeds. He also happens to be the son of Magneto, along with his twin sister Scarlet Witch. While this is certainly a fascinating cast addition to the time-bending X-Men: Days of Future Past, it could very well affect Marvel’s Avengers sequel as Joss Whedon only recently revealed that he’s written both Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch into his script. Hit the jump for more.

Here’s how Singer broke the news of Peters’ casting and the character addition on Twitter:

Late last month, Joss Whedon revealed that he was including two of his favorite comics characters in The Avengers 2, and Kevin Feige later confirmed that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are indeed poised to appear as part of the Avengers team in the follow-up. Legally speaking, both Marvel and Fox posses the right to include Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in their feature films. However, given that Days of Future Past will hit theaters next year while The Avengers 2 doesn’t open until 2015, audiences may be a tad confused at seeing two iterations of the character onscreen.

As Marvel/Disney and Fox are competing in ...

New posters have been released for World War Z, Pacific Rim, and The Conjuring. Starting with World War Z, Paramount seems determined to make sure that no zombies are shown in the marketing beyond a faceless hoard. This new poster also copies the previous one, and so we're stuck with a handsome guy looking over devastation. Is that enough to get people interested? Moving on to Pacific Rim, it's a giant robot about to take a nasty-looking blade to a giant monster. It's easy to understand, and easy to like. Finally, the UK poster for The Conjuring is sadly generic and rests on the power of a creepy doll. This could be used for countless horror movies.

Hit the jump to check out the posters. World War Z opens in 3D on June 21st. Pacific Rim opens in 3D on July 12th. The Conjuring opens July 19th.

Via Paramount Pictures.

Here's the official synopsis for World War Z:
The story revolves around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself.
Via Facebook.

Here's the official synopsis for Pacific Rim:
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots ...

So much for retirement. Much has been made over the past year or so about the fact that filmmaker Steven Soderbergh would be taking a self-imposed hiatus from directing after the release of his Liberace film Behind the Candelabra. While Candelabra premieres on HBO this Sunday, it appears that Soderbergh is already coming out of “retirement” to direct a new TV series for Cinemax. The filmmaker will helm 10 episodes of a period series called The Knick, which will star Clive Owen and takes place in New York in 1900. Hit the jump for more.

While some may see this move as Soderbergh reneging on his retirement comments, technically he’s not going back to directing feature films. Apparently his plan is to stay out of the feature game for a while. Regardless, Soderbergh can do whatever the hell he wants; if his artistic voice is coming back to the public in any way, I’m not complaining.

Deadline reports that Soderbergh is in talks to board the TV series The Knight. Cinemax has given a 10-episode commitment to the series, and Soderbergh will be directing all of the episodes himself. The series takes place in downtown New York in 1900 and centers on “the groundbreaking surgeons, nurses and staff at Knickerbocker Hospital, who are pushing the bounds of medicine in a time of astonishingly high mortality rates and zero antibiotics.” Clive Owen will star, and Jack Amiel and Michael Begler (Big Miracle) are onboard as writers/executive producers.

This isn’t Soderbergh’s first foray into television, ...

Pixar has released the first clip from Monsters University. The Revenge of the Nerds-esque story finds Mike (Billy Crystal) and Sully (John Goodman) joining a fraternity of outcasts as all of the Greek houses must compete against each other in the Scare Games, which carry dire consequences for the losers. The clip shows the roommates Mike and Sulley and how their bunk-bed situation has led to an awkward first moment involving shedding and humble stable boys. It's cute and funny, and it's a hopeful sign for the rest of the picture.

Hit the jump to check out the clip. The film also features the voices of Steve Buscemi, Helen Mirren, John Krasinski, Nathan Fillion, Bonnie Hunt, Dave Foley, Sean Hayes, Joel Murray, Peter Sohn, Aubrey Plaza, Tyler Labine, Bobby Moynihan, Julie Sweeney, Alfred Molina, Beth Behrs, and of course, John Ratzenberger. Monsters University opens in 3D on June 21, 2013.

Here’s the official synopsis for Monsters University:
Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. Monsters University unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends.

With director Todd Phillips’ comedy sequel The Hangover Part III opening this week, I recently sat down with him for an extended interview. In the final installment to the popular franchise, we find Stu (Helms), Phil (Cooper), and Doug (Justin Bartha) en route to taking Alan (Galifianakis) to a psychiatric hospital when the gang is side-trekked by a mysterious man (John Goodman) who kidnaps Doug and forces the wolf pack to track down Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong), who stole $21 million from Goodman’s character. As you might expect, chaos ensues. For more on the film, watch the red band trailer or check out over forty images.

During the interview, Phillips and screenwriter Craig Mazin talked about his first cut versus the theatrical release, deleted scenes, what can fans expect on the Blu-ray, what it's like working for Warner Bros. and the creative freedom he's allowed, the writing process, how the story changed, film versus digital, thoughts on doing a 3D comedy, and more. In addition, Phillips reveals they're talking about doing the ultimate Hangover box set which would include new interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and more. Hit the jump for what they had to say.

How long was your first cut when you brought in Hangover 3?

TODD PHILLIPS: It was about 2 hours and 5 minutes. It wasn’t that long.

How long was the final release?

PHILLIPS: It’s about 100 minutes.

Now when you do a first cut, is your first cut everything or is it like a director’s cut?

PHILLIPS: It’s a director’s cut, it’s never just everything. I mean ...

Xbox unveiled its brand new game console earlier this week, and as part of the announcement, a new game from Bungie and Activision was teased. The team behind Halo is launching a new franchise called Destiny, and a live-action trailer for the game has been released online. In the world of the game, the hero is a Guardian of the last safe city on Earth following the arrival of “the Traveler.” This live-action/CG trailer, directed by Jon Favreau, stars Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, Revolution) as a Guardian of the City who is recalling an important life lesson he once learned. The trailer essentially gives Favreau the chance to make the Star Wars film he never could, but I’m interested to see more from the game.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. Gameplay from Destiny will be unveiled at the E3 press conference on June 10th.

Head over to Destiny’s official website for more info.

I've come to the conclusion that MacGruber 2 is the new Anchorman 2. It's the sequel we'll want for years and years, but the studio will keep waiting to see if the cult fanbase is big enough to warrant a greenlight (or if there's an empty spot in their calendar). It's also worth noting that Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy made waaaaaay more money than MacGruber. But Will Forte can look forward to being asked about MacGruber 2 every time he does an interview, and he still seems fairly optimistic about the possibility. In April, he said "there will be some form" of the sequel, and now he tells Rolling Stone, "June 10th my writing partners John Solomon, Jorma Taccone, and I are locking ourselves in a room and writing it." Forte also told Rolling Stone there have been discussions about bringing back Kristen Wiig and Ryan Phillippe. Of course, last June, Forte said he would be writing the script in the next six months, so he could just be messing with us.

Even if we hold out hope for a MacGruber 2, we shouldn't expect it for years unless Forte rockets to the A-list. If he receives enough critical acclaim and attention for his performance in Alexander Payne's new drama, Nebraska, that might not be out of the realm of possibility. In the meantime, just keep chanting "KFBR392".
