Today is like Christmas for box office nerds - giant franchises, an over-packed holiday schedule, all-time records on the line? In my world, it’s about as exciting as it gets. Three major new releases join an already saturated marketplace this weekend – The Hangover Part III, Fast & Furious 6 and the animated Epic. For weeks, box office watchers have wondered how the unusual decision to set two major studio sequels (targeting roughly the same audience) opposite each other would play out. Now its time to open our presents.

The Hangover III got an early start (opening Thursday with an estimated $11.7 million including Wednesday pm and midnight previews), but Fast & Furious 6 will be the undisputed Memorial Day winner. From 3,658 locations, the Universal release took in an estimated $38.2 million. That’s a new record for the 12 year-old franchise, topping the $34.4 million of 2011’s Fast Five. At this point, Fast 6 is expected to take in close to $100 million through Sunday and $119 million for the four-day holiday frame. In contrast, The Hangover III is struggling. Just two years after The Hangover Part II broke records with its $85.9 million opening weekend, its follow-up is expected to earn just $64 million over its first five days. Overall, the 2013 Memorial Day weekend is on track to become the most lucrative of all time, so check back tomorrow for more on this crazy-busy holiday box office.

Sony Pictures has released a new featurette for director Roland Emmerich’s upcoming actioner White House Down. The story follows a rejected Secret Service applicant (Channing Tatum) who must save the President (Jamie Foxx) when a heavily-armed paramilitary group takes over the White House. We saw in the most recent trailer that the pic has an almost buddy cop feel to it, and this featurette shows off a few new bits of footage that continue to be promising. We also get a fascinating look behind the scenes at the massive sets that Emmerich built in order to re-create the White House, as he shot almost exclusively on soundstages for the film.

Hit the jump to watch the featurette, and if you missed any of Steve’s set visit coverage be sure to check out 35 things to know and his interviews with Tatum, Emmerich, producers Brad Fischer and Reid Carolin, producer Harold Kloser, and production designer Kirk M. Petruecelli. The film also stars Jason Clarke, James Woods, and Maggie Gyllenhaal and opens on June 28th.

Here’s the synopsis for White House Down:
Capitol Policeman John Cale (Channing Tatum) has just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service of protecting President James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx). Not wanting to let down his little girl with the news, he takes her on a tour of the White House, when the complex is overtaken by a heavily armed paramilitary group. Now, with the nation’s government falling into chaos and time running out, it’s up to Cale ...

Most A-list games now come with special editions and collector's editions. The special edition costs a little bit more, and throws in some nice gameplay perks with a little swag. The collector's edition costs a lot more, comes with everything the special edition has, more gameplay stuff, and then throws in even more swag. Grand Theft Auto V is no exception. Everyone who pre-orders will get access to the "Atomic Blimp". The special edition comes with a steelbook case, blueprint map, stunt plane, special ability boost, additional weapons, and bonus outfits, tattoos, etc. The collector's edition comes with all that stuff along with a New Era "Los Santos" cap, a security deposit bag with logo key, unique vehicles and garage, and custom characters (e.g. Niko Bellic from Grand Theft Auto IV).

Hit the jump to see images of the editions and for the press release, which contains more details about what comes with each edition. Click here to pre-order the special edition, and click here to pre-order the collector's edition. Grand Theft Auto V will be released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 17th.

In a rather unexpected development, director Guy Ritchie’s adaptation of the popular TV series The Man from U.N.C.L.E. has lost its leading man. Tom Cruise was originally set to star in the Warner Bros. spy pic, which is being planned as a potential franchise-starter, but with a fall production start-date looming Cruise has now vacated the starring role in order to focus his efforts on getting Mission: Impossible 5 off the ground. The film had recently started filling out its cast with Armie Hammer signing on to co-star and Alicia Vikander (Anna Karenina) entering talks to play the film’s female lead, but Ritchie must now start searching to fill his leading role . Hit the jump for more on the future of both U.N.C.L.E. and Mission: Impossible 5.

Warner Bros.' adaptation of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. has had a rather troubled development process. Steven Soderbergh was initially planning to direct with George Clooney being eyed for the lead role, but Clooney opted not to sign on for fear of exacerbating his back problems with the film’s action-heavy demands. Actors like Bradley Cooper and Channing Tatum were subsequently eyed to topline the pic, but Soderbergh eventually left the project altogether when Warner Bros. refused to provide him with the budget necessary to fulfill his vision.

Ritchie signed on to produce and direct The Man from U.N.C.L.E. in December of 2011, and the project was finally on track to start production this year before Cruise’s abrupt exit. Deadline reports that Cruise decided to leave U.N.C.L.E. in order to ...

Four clips have been released for the fourth season of Arrested Development. Earlier this week, I posted six questions about the upcoming season, and these clips provide some answers. First, the language will still be bleeped, which is a nice touch (although we don't know if it will be bleeped throughout the season; it's just bleeped in this instance). Also, there's a throwback to the confusion regarding bees and beads.

Hit the jump to check out the clips. Arrested Development: Season 4 premieres on May 26th.

Via Netflix.

Amazon's Gold Box Deal of the Day is The West Wing: The Complete Series Collection for $79.99 (73% off its $299.99 list price). The first four seasons is among the best television ever made. The writing is top-notch, the performances are unforgettable, and it's constantly uplifting. If you bought these seasons individually, you'd be paying over $80, so this box set is already a good deal. Throw in the last three seasons (season 5 is rough, but the show picks back up in seasons 6 and 7), and today's deal is definitely a bargain. Like all Gold Box deals, it’s only good while supplies last or until midnight tonight. Click here to buy. For hundreds of additional DVD and Blu-ray deals, click here.

Note: Collider earns a small referral fee when our readers purchase something on Amazon through one of our links. The money generated helps pay our staff and keep the site running. Thank you for reading and supporting Collider.

In 2011, The Amazing Spider-Man went to Comic-Con, and showed off the first footage of The Lizard (the reaction on Twitter from my peers seemed to be "That looks like Killer Croc, and I hope they do more work on the CGI"). The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set to kick off the 2014 summer movie season, and so it looks like Sony is bringing the movie for a panel at this summer's San Diego Comic-Con, which runs from July 18 - 21st. Jamie Foxx, who plays the villain Electro, tells Yahoo! Movies, "Now I'm just waiting to get to Comic-Con and see how people respond to it." People will probably be enthusiastic. They love Spider-Man, and while The Amazing Spider-Man is a misfire, it didn't kill off interest in the reboot. There's still a great cast, and hopefully the script is stronger this time around.

The film also stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Dane DeHaan, Shailene Woodley, Paul Giamatti, Felicity Jones, Chris Cooper, and Sally Field. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in 3D on May 2, 2014.

I know many a Harry Potter fan made the pilgrimage to Universal Orlando Resort to down a butterbeer when The Wizarding World of Harry Potter opened. As a lifelong Simpsons fan, I now have my own pilgrimage to make. Universal Studios announced they will build a real-life Springfield to accompany The Simpsons Ride. The concept art (previewed above) shows the Kwik-E-Mart, Moe's Tavern, Krusty Burger, The Android's Dungeon & Baseball Card Shop, Lard Lad Donuts, Krustyland, and a Duff brewery. Simpsons creator Matt Groening has previously chosen not to license Duff Beer, concerned it would encourage kids to drink. But the press release promises, "And yes – there will be Duff Beer, brewed exclusively for Universal Orlando."

There's more food joints, the Jebediah statue (to embiggen the smallest patron), and a new attraction, Kang & Kodos’ Twirl ‘n’ Hurl. I must go. Hit the jump for the press release with all the details and the full concept art.

Amanda Seyfried (Les Miserables) will join the cast of the Noah Baumbach-directed midlife crisis comedy, While We’re Young.
Gael Garcia Bernal (The Motorcycle Diaries) will lead Jon Stewart's directorial debut, Rosewater.

Hit the jump for more on each casting announcement.

The Wrap reports that Seyfried will join Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts and Adam Driver in While We're Young. The picture centers on a married couple (Stiller and Watts) that strike up an unlikely friendship with a free-spirited younger couple (Driver and Seyfried), the latter of whom makes homemade ice cream. Seyfried will be heard in this weekend's animated film Epic. She's currently filming Seth MacFarlane's A Million Ways to Die in the West and has recently signed on to star in Craig Zobel's Z for Zacharia.

Also from The Wrap is word that Bernal will be the lead in Rosewater, Stewart's adaptation of the 2011 book Then They Came For Me: A Family's Story of Love, Captivity and Survival, from co-writers Maziar Bahari and Aimee Molloy. The story follows Bahari, played by Bernal, "a journalist who leaves his pregnant fiancé behind in London while he travels to Iran to spend a week covering the country's presidential elections. Instead, he winds up spending 118 days in a notorious Iranian prison where he is brutally interrogated by a man whose defining characteristic is the smell of rosewater."

Once more from The Wrap, Considine is in negotiations to star in ...

Some new set photos from Gareth Edwards' Godzilla reboot have popped up. As expected in a giant rampaging monster movie, the images show scenes of wanton destruction of a small Japanese fishing village and what appears to be schoolchildren fleeing from said monster. Unfortunately, our only look at the title monster is a giant blue screen that towers over the set. Be sure to check out previous galleries of set photos here, here and here.

Godzilla stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn, Bryan Crantson, Ken Watanabe, and Richard T. Jones and opens in 3D on May 16, 2014. See the images after the jump.

Producer Joe Roth does enjoy his fairy-tale reimaginings. His recent films including Alice in Wonderland, Snow White and the Huntsman, Oz the Great and Powerful, and the upcoming Maleficent, which is the tale of Sleeping Beauty told from the villain's perspective. Since Alice and Oz were both monster hits, it's not surprise that Roth is now planning another fairy-tale* movie. According to Deadline, Roth has picked up the rights for Soman Chainani's new young adult novel, The School for Good and Evil. The story takes place in a school where students are chosen and trained to become heroes or villains. The beautiful Sophie expects to be a princess in the School for Good while her homely best friend Agatha readies herself to be a witch in the School for Evil. But when they arrive, their roles are reversed. It sounds like a fun premise that's reminiscent of the opening of Wicked. The book is the first in a planned trilogy, so Universal Pictures' seven-figure deal makes even more sense when a potential franchise is at stake.

Deadline reports that Chainani will co-write the script with her former screenwriting professor Malia Scotch Marmo (Hook). Hit the jump for the official synopsis of The School for Good and Evil.

Here's the official synopsis for Soman Chainani's The School for Good and Evil:

Though production is already well underway on director Bryan Singer’s sequel X-Men: Future Past in Canada, a late addition to the cast has been made. Singer announced today on Twitter that American Horror Story star Evan Peters will play Quicksilver in the star-studded superhero pic, though this may make things quite complicated for Marvel’s The Avengers 2. In comics lore, Quicksilver is a mutant capable of moving and thinking at superhuman speeds. He also happens to be the son of Magneto, along with his twin sister Scarlet Witch. While this is certainly a fascinating cast addition to the time-bending X-Men: Days of Future Past, it could very well affect Marvel’s Avengers sequel as Joss Whedon only recently revealed that he’s written both Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch into his script. Hit the jump for more.

Here’s how Singer broke the news of Peters’ casting and the character addition on Twitter:

Late last month, Joss Whedon revealed that he was including two of his favorite comics characters in The Avengers 2, and Kevin Feige later confirmed that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are indeed poised to appear as part of the Avengers team in the follow-up. Legally speaking, both Marvel and Fox posses the right to include Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in their feature films. However, given that Days of Future Past will hit theaters next year while The Avengers 2 doesn’t open until 2015, audiences may be a tad confused at seeing two iterations of the character onscreen.

As Marvel/Disney and Fox are competing in ...

New posters have been released for World War Z, Pacific Rim, and The Conjuring. Starting with World War Z, Paramount seems determined to make sure that no zombies are shown in the marketing beyond a faceless hoard. This new poster also copies the previous one, and so we're stuck with a handsome guy looking over devastation. Is that enough to get people interested? Moving on to Pacific Rim, it's a giant robot about to take a nasty-looking blade to a giant monster. It's easy to understand, and easy to like. Finally, the UK poster for The Conjuring is sadly generic and rests on the power of a creepy doll. This could be used for countless horror movies.

Hit the jump to check out the posters. World War Z opens in 3D on June 21st. Pacific Rim opens in 3D on July 12th. The Conjuring opens July 19th.

Via Paramount Pictures.

Here's the official synopsis for World War Z:
The story revolves around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself.
Via Facebook.

Here's the official synopsis for Pacific Rim:
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots ...

So much for retirement. Much has been made over the past year or so about the fact that filmmaker Steven Soderbergh would be taking a self-imposed hiatus from directing after the release of his Liberace film Behind the Candelabra. While Candelabra premieres on HBO this Sunday, it appears that Soderbergh is already coming out of “retirement” to direct a new TV series for Cinemax. The filmmaker will helm 10 episodes of a period series called The Knick, which will star Clive Owen and takes place in New York in 1900. Hit the jump for more.

While some may see this move as Soderbergh reneging on his retirement comments, technically he’s not going back to directing feature films. Apparently his plan is to stay out of the feature game for a while. Regardless, Soderbergh can do whatever the hell he wants; if his artistic voice is coming back to the public in any way, I’m not complaining.

Deadline reports that Soderbergh is in talks to board the TV series The Knight. Cinemax has given a 10-episode commitment to the series, and Soderbergh will be directing all of the episodes himself. The series takes place in downtown New York in 1900 and centers on “the groundbreaking surgeons, nurses and staff at Knickerbocker Hospital, who are pushing the bounds of medicine in a time of astonishingly high mortality rates and zero antibiotics.” Clive Owen will star, and Jack Amiel and Michael Begler (Big Miracle) are onboard as writers/executive producers.

This isn’t Soderbergh’s first foray into television, ...

I've come to the conclusion that MacGruber 2 is the new Anchorman 2. It's the sequel we'll want for years and years, but the studio will keep waiting to see if the cult fanbase is big enough to warrant a greenlight (or if there's an empty spot in their calendar). It's also worth noting that Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy made waaaaaay more money than MacGruber. But Will Forte can look forward to being asked about MacGruber 2 every time he does an interview, and he still seems fairly optimistic about the possibility. In April, he said "there will be some form" of the sequel, and now he tells Rolling Stone, "June 10th my writing partners John Solomon, Jorma Taccone, and I are locking ourselves in a room and writing it." Forte also told Rolling Stone there have been discussions about bringing back Kristen Wiig and Ryan Phillippe. Of course, last June, Forte said he would be writing the script in the next six months, so he could just be messing with us.

Even if we hold out hope for a MacGruber 2, we shouldn't expect it for years unless Forte rockets to the A-list. If he receives enough critical acclaim and attention for his performance in Alexander Payne's new drama, Nebraska, that might not be out of the realm of possibility. In the meantime, just keep chanting "KFBR392".

Despite what Hero Complex Gallery’s name might lead you to believe, not every HCG show is superhero-related. Often clever, generally awesome, and featuring a consistently talented pool of artists? Yes, for sure. Wall-to-wall prints featuring spandex-clad mutants, Kryptonian refugees, and/or unkillable Canadians with razor-sharp claws? Not so much.

Their next show-- Arch Nemesis, which opens this Friday at the gallery’s Los Angeles location—falls somewhere in-between. Yes, you’ll get all the Batman, Fantastic Four, and Justice League posters you can handle…but they’ll be rubbing elbows with new prints based on geek-friendly properties like Predator, The Wizard of Oz, and Masters of The Universe. Wanna see some preview images from the show (and find out how you can win one of two extremely rare variant prints)? Meet me after the jump, folks.

We’ve got a lot of photos and info to get through and precious little time to do so (Limited Paper’s got an appointment to get a perm this morning), so let’s get right to it: our friends at Hero Complex Gallery are opening their new show, Arch Nemesis, this Friday, and yesterday they sent over some preview images and info for our perusal. For details on Hero Complex Gallery’s latest, let’s go to the press release:
Hero Complex Gallery is proud to announce our next exhibition on May 24th, 2013, “Arch Nemesis!” - an art show focusing on Bad Guys...on the Villains, Rogues, and Scoundrels of the world. And what good is a Nemesis show without a few heroes to kick around!

There's been some controversy over a scene in Star Trek Into Darkness where Carol Marcus (Alice Eve) strips down to her underwear on screen for no reason. Director J.J. Abrams recently went on Conan to explain his decision by saying that it was intended as a moment of levity in an action-packed scene. He also said that we see Kirk (Chris Pine) naked from the waist up post-threesome with some alien babes. Abrams doesn't seem to quite get it that both scenes objectify women, but in terms of eye candy, Eve and Pine are both very attractive people. However, if you want some more partial nudity, it turns out there was a deleted scene of Benedict Cumberbatch showering, and thus creating today's most searched phrase on Google. This is a real scene, not one made up by Conan.

Hit the jump to check out Cumberbatch's "evil shower".
