To quote Nelson Muntz, "I can think of two things wrong with that title."

The notion of an unfilmable novel is rapidly becoming a thing of the past. You can film anything. You might film it badly, but you can film it. David Cronenberg proved that in 1991 when he adapted William S. Burrough’s novel Naked Lunch for the big screen. Good or bad doesn’t quite enter into it – to dive into Burroughs is to experience madness in its purest form – but if anything could defy adaptation, that book would be it. And if any director could find a way to crack its code, it would be Cronenberg. Hit the jump for my review of Naked Lunch on Blu-ray.

His secret lay in bringing Burrough’s own life into the text, making him the ostensible hero. Bill Lee (Peter Weller) makes a living as an exterminator while talking writing with his hep cat buddies down at the coffee shop. Then his wife (Judy Davis) starts injecting his bug powder from work and suddenly the Weird Shit comes scuttling out of the walls. Lee finds himself caught in the machinations of talking bugs, talking anuses, bugs with talking anuses, typewriters that turn into bugs with talking anuses and for some inexplicable reason, Roy Scheider.

So yeah, not exactly popcorn entertainment. And its biggest failings come when Cronenberg indulges in strangeness for its own sake. The narrative hardly moves, and when it does, we have absolutely no idea what’s going on. That becomes disconcerting ...

Blumhouse Productions (Insidious, Sinister, Paranormal Activity, The Purge) has become known for micro-budget horror films that go gangbusters at the box office. With Dark Skies, Blumhouse combined their well-honed approach to horror with a sci-fi twist, namely a threat from extraterrestrial beings. While it's certainly not the biggest money-maker for the production company, Dark Skies might be my favorite of their films so far. Not only does it feature an exceptional cast in Keri Russell, Josh Hamilton, Dakota Goyo, Annie Thurman and J.K Simmons, but writer-director Scott Stewart combines the best of Steven Spielberg's family-centric films with a hint of Stanley Kubrick's psychological horror. Now that Dark Skies is available on Blu-ray, you can check it out for yourself. Hit the jump for my Blu-ray review.

Rather than rehash my review of the film, you can check out what I thought of it here. In brief, I felt Dark Skies was an entertaining little thriller that smartly avoided the found-footage pitfall and wisely chose to focus on each of the characters in a family that's being terrorized. The mystery portion of Dark Skies doesn't exactly hit the nail on the head since the title and the promotional material screams "aliens," but the build up to the eventual - and obvious - reveal is a fun ride. Russell and Hamilton portray the most convincing "married couple with issues" I've seen in a while and Goyo and his co-star Kadan Rockett are complete naturals. Simmons brings some gravitas to an exposition-filled role that could have come across as ham-fisted in someone else's ...

The Wachowski siblings and Tom Tykwer's Cloud Atlas was tragically the most under-appreciated and under-seen film of 2012. It had to be a marketing mishap. How else do you explain the poor performance of a film that encompasses multiple genres over vastly different time periods with high-caliber actors like Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Sturgess, Hugo Weaving, Hugh Grant and Jim Broadbent (just to name a few) taking on multiple roles? But wait, there's hope! You can help remedy this glaring oversight by picking up the ambitious and epic movie on DVD and Blu-ray now. Hit the jump for my review of Cloud Atlas on Blu-ray.

Our own Matt Goldberg's review of the film can be read here. We also talked about the film in an episode of our podcast and implored audiences to go give it a chance. No one listened (either to the podcast or our advice, most likely). The word "ambitious" was thrown around a lot for Cloud Atlas, to the point that it took on a negative and almost snarky connotation. One of the most expensive independent films with a budget of around $100 million, Cloud Atlas was banking on the hopes that a timeless love story that transcends all boundaries - and features some of today's most talented filmmakers both behind and in front of the camera - would be enough of a draw to lure and ultimately captivate audiences. Unfortunately, the gamble didn't quite pay off, which not only does the film a disservice, but future films with similar ambitions.

Although Walt Disney never got a chance to see his own version of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz stories brought to the screen before his death in 1966, director Sam Raimi's Oz the Great and Powerful makes a valiant attempt at recreating Disney's vision. The big-budget, 3D reimagining of Baum's collection of stories introduces small-time magician turned prophecy-fulfilling wizard, Oscar Diggs (James Franco) as he's swept up into the magical world of Oz where must sort out the intentions of three very attractive witches (Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz). Accompanied by a flying monkey and a china doll (voiced by Zach Braff and Joey King respectively), Diggs must discover the goodness within him if he's to save the people of Oz from the tyranny of the wicked witch.

Now available on Blu-ray, Oz the Great and Powerful is a visually dazzling addition to the Oz films that acts as a prequel to 1939's The Wizard of Oz. While it comes nowhere near the caliber of that classic tale, this new imagining is a welcome journey back into the Emerald City and the unique lands that surround it. Hit the jump for my Blu-ray review.

For our own Matt Goldberg's review, click here. My two cents on the film is that it was a spirited adventure tale with beautifully-rendered environments and fantastical characters that works perfectly on a level that children can enjoy. While the lessons of courage, compassion and intelligence are traded in for the less-developed concept of "goodness," Oz the Great and ...

In many ways, Tom Cruise never escaped the fallout from that infamous 2005 ride on Oprah’s couch. His box office returns have gradually slipped and the sheen of “Scientology Weirdo” still hangs around him in the public mind. It’s quite unfair because 1) the man’s private life is still his own business and 2) the quality of his films in recent years has been quite good. From his brilliant cameo in Tropic Thunder to the slick thrills of Valkyrie and the unexpected triumph of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, he’s pretty much firing on all cylinders these days... despite comparatively poor box office. Jack Reacher is a sad testament to the bind he finds himself in: a smart, intelligent action thriller that got lost amid bad timing. The Blu-ray release is a perfect opportunity to catch what you probably missed. Hit the jump for my full review.

Cruise’s character stems from the mind of author Lee Child: a rough-and-tumble Englishman born of equal parts Tom Clancy and Mickey Spillane. Reacher himself is a former MP, who dropped off the grid after his discharge and now lives life as a ghost. He withdraws his military pension via Western Union in cash, travels only by bus or hitchhiking, and buys anything he needs off the rack. He emerges from anonymity after a sniper he once tracked is accused of a horrific crime. The charges smell fishy and while the man’s defense attorney (a very effective Rosamund Pike) doesn’t necessarily want Reacher’s help, he’s too ...

HBO has become one of the great places for auteurs to make cheaper movies. Of late we’ve seen Todd Haynes and Steven Soderbergh turn to the channel to get films made, and now Philip Kaufman has joined their ranks. The man behind The Right Stuff and The Unbearable Lightness of Being directed Hemingway & Gellhorn, a biopic about Ernest Hemingway’s one-time wife and reporter Martha Gellhorn. And for the film he got Nicole Kidman and Clive Owen to star as his drunken lovers. Our review of the Blu-ray of Hemingway & Gellhorn follows after the jump.

Told partly through the perspective of an older Gellhorn (Kidman), it shows their introduction at Sloppy Joe’s bar in Key West. She’s a writer who’s been compared to Hemingway, he’s a drunken lout who just caught a big game fish. There is an attraction, but he’s married to Pauline (Molly Parker). Ernest’s friends, including John Dos Passos (David Strathairn) are covering the Spanish civil war, and Martha wants to go to write about it. And by her going, Hemingway also decides to cover the war so the two can get to know each other. There, along with a film crew headed up by documentarian Joris Ivens (Metallica’s Lars Ulrich), they see the rebel fighters and the Russian presence. And during one bombing, the two finally consummate their attraction.

Pauline is Catholic, so she doesn’t believe in divorce, but once they return to America to release their documentary, their love affair is a barely kept secret. Both ...

The Impossible is a tricky film to write about because there’s just something inherently tricky about the film itself. Maybe that’s because it’s based on a true story that often feels a little too impossible to believe. Or maybe it’s because that story has been so blatantly Hollywood-ized – with Spanish 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami survivors María Belón Alvárez and Tomás Belón recast as the impossibly blonde-haired and blue-eyed Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor. Or maybe it’s because the finished film falls into a Hollywood genre that typically encourages us to revel in the onscreen wreckage, only here it’s impossible to do so without feeling weird - I mean, over 200,000 people died as a result of that really cool-looking wave! Anyway, these were the issues I had when I first saw The Impossible and which resurfaced while watching it on Blu-ray. Hit the jump for my review.

But I don’t want to just send a giant wet tsunami blanket over the whole film, which certainly has its merits. For starters, the true story of the Belón-Alvárez family’s survival is a riveting one. On vacation in Khao Lak, Thailand, for Christmas holiday, María Belón Alvárez, Tomás Belón and their children were among the hundreds of thousands affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. In the film simulacrum of events, María is Maria, a British physician-turned-housewife, played by Naomi Watts, and Tomás is now Scottish businessman Henry, played by Ewan McGregor. In the film’s opening moments, we are introduced to these loving ...

Writer-director Jordan Roberts' Frankie Go Boom is one of those films that seemed destined for cult comedy status. The premise is simple enough: a young man, tormented all his life by his older brother's pranks, must track down an unauthorized and rather embarrassing sex tape before it gets out to the general public. Then you look at the impressive cast - Charlie Hunnam, Chris O'Dowd, Lizzy Caplan, Chris Noth and Ron Perlman - and you wonder, how can this one possibly miss? I decided to check out the newly-released Blu-ray to find out. Hit the jump to check out my review.

The Feature:

Since we haven't reviewed the feature film here before, I'll do a brief rundown and share my thoughts. I was initially interested in Frankie Go Boom for two reasons: the cast and the possibility of this becoming a cult comedy. I'm a fan of Hunnam from his Sons of Anarchy series and was interested in seeing him try comedy on for size; I was equally curious to see him opposite his SoA co-star Perlman, who would be dressed in drag as a post-operative transsexual in the film. Hunnam plays a pretty good straight man surrounded by a cast of wacky and unapologetic characters. Having seen him and Perlman share a strange couple of scenes in the film, I'll never look at SoA again. The rest of the cast - the up-and-coming O'Dowd, the always reliable and attractive Caplan and the capable Noth - give it their all and manage to turn in ...

When does self-indulgence trump talent? Plenty of directors have tested that boundary to their detriment: witness the litter of auteurial “visions” that almost destroyed the studio system in the late 1970s. Quentin Tarantino hasn’t gotten there yet. His voice shines too bright and his visions are too singular to let their increasing flabbiness bother us. But while his epic Django Unchained remains a terrific entry in his canon, one wonders how much farther it would have gone if the director could just get out of his own way. Hit the jump for my full review of Django Unchained on Blu-ray.

The problems with Django don’t stand a chance against its positive qualities, as Tarantino takes us through another grindhouse-infused revisionist historical bloodbath. He redefines the escaped slave narrative as a high-flown revenge saga, doing for blacks in antebellum America what Inglourious Basterds did for European Jews. At its heart sits Django (Jamie Foxx), a rebellious slave liberated by wily bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) as part of an elaborate scheme to collect the reward on some bad men. In exchange for Django’s help Schultz will aid him in rescuing his wife (Kerry Washington) from sadistic plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio).

For oh, we’ll say 70 percent of its running time, it makes good on the promise of Tarantino’s one-of-a-kind mayhem. He gleefully riffs on the gratuitous emotions of revenge fantasies, sprinkling in bits of exaggerated history and plenty of self-referential smirks to keep it spicy. The film’s best moments brim ...

I had little idea of what to expect going into a viewing of Roman Coppola's A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, having only seen these suggestive posters. What I found was a surprisingly charming tale of a gifted man obsessed with beautiful possessions who is having trouble letting go of his latest love. It was the cast that really drew me in, sporting Charlie Sheen, Jason Schwartzman, Patricia Arquette, Katheryn Winnick, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Aubrey Plaza and Bill Murray, plus the written and directorial effort from the Oscar-nominated Roman Coppola. It's a fun little gem of a picture you probably missed in theaters, so hit the jump to check out my review of the film on Blu-ray to see if it's right for you.

The Feature:

At a runtime of 87 minutes, this is a quick little tale that mixes the absurd with the all too real as viewers get to explore inside the mind of aging artist, Charles Swan III (Sheen). Though it's based on the work and life of Los Angeles artist Charles White III, the film could easily be a commentary on Sheen's own private life or a bit of catharsis on the part of Coppola himself. In fact, it's all three of these things together, punctuated by fantastical retreats into daydreams. Every time that life gets a little too difficult for Swan III - an apparent heart condition, a looming deadline, the irreconcilable break-up with his beautiful girlfriend (Winnick) - he escapes into one of his ...

Hero Steve Rogers, a.k.a Captain America, can use his peak human powers to battle the forces of evil, but even he is no match for plot holes, budget constraints, and downright silly story choices. The 1990 Captain America film directed by Albert Pyun, the first live action film starring Marvel Comic’s iconic patriotic superhero, is a textbook example of what happens when a crew gives their all to a production that was doomed with an almost non-existent budget and tight filming schedule. Hit the jump for my Blu-ray review of Captain America.

The story follows the exploits of sickly Steve Rogers (Matt Salinger), an all-American man who gives himself over to his country in order to battle the forces of Hitler in World War 2. He is the single candidate out of 600 that was deemed ideal to undergo the government’s secret Super Soldier program, developed to fill America’s armed forces with soldiers that exhibited strength, speed, and intelligence to rival even the best of world athletes. Unfortunately, Steve is the first and last soldier the program creates, as the sole scientist with knowledge of the process is slain by a German agent. Named Captain America by his superiors, he embarks on a mission to stop a sinister villain known as The Red Skull (Scott Paulin), who plans to launch a missile at some unknown American city. Steve unsuccessfully battles The Red Skull, and winds up frozen for 47 years, and awakens in 1990 to find a changed world where his ...

Director Gus Van Sant is an auteur capable of dropping an award-winning character-driven film (Good Will Hunting) with big-name actors one year, and small, provocative films where characters barely talk to each other the whole time (Last Days) the next. No matter which Van Sant flavor is your favorite, the man is great at both of them. For his latest, Promised Land, he goes the mainstream route - taking A-list actors into a farming community for a fracking debate. The film was originally supposed to be Matt Damon's (School Ties) directorial debut, but scheduling conflicts threw it in Van Sant's lap with just over a month to prepare. Despite some solid direction and acting, Promised Land suffers from a few hiccups. But how does it hold up on Universal's Blu-ray? Hit the jump and I'll tell you all about it.

Steve Butler (Damon) is a traveling salesman for Global, a multi-billion dollar natural gas company. What he sells to struggling small town farmers is the intangible dream of millions if they will just sign on the dotted line. He's part con-man, part everyman. His farming roots make him damn good at his job - he's able to talk on the level with locals going through devastating economic hardships. On the other hand, he's a corporate wolf in flannel clothing who bribes mayors and sincerely threatens to punch people in the face when he's frustrated.

His partner is the much more icy cool Sue (Frances McDormand). The duo is sent to a rural ...

Creating the perfect mix of drama, comedy, romance, and powerful acting is often a theatrical recipe that stands just out of reach of most productions. Sometimes the drama and romance is there, but the comedic moments fall flat, or the actors give their all to a script that jumps from place to place, fostering few laughs and even fewer tears. Silver Linings Playbook, an Academy nominated film with an award-winning cast, gives audiences a full helping of laughs, tears, and embraces in amazing, yet equal measure, brought to the table by a stellar group of actors who not only made their characters lovable, but astonishingly believable.

In the film 122-minute film, Pat (Bradley Cooper) has just been checked out of a mental help facility by his mother Dolores (Jacki Weaver), ready, though inadequately prepared, to put his shattered life back together and win back the love of his estranged wife. He begins his quest by moving back into his childhood home with his mother and OCD father, Pat (Robert De Niro), an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan. His journey to mental stability is constantly upended by his bipolar mood swings and anger issues, made stronger by his refusal to take his medication, and his utter refusal to let his old life go. Life becomes even more confusing when he attends a dinner at his friends’ home and meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), a widow whose abrasive personality clashes with everyone around her. Though full of cringe-worthy moments, the two become close and begin ...

Considering that the film was bumped around from September to January due to a national tragedy, it would be nice to feel a little sorry for Ruben Fleischer’s Gangster Squad. The period film, which casts Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling as cops going against Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) for control of Los Angeles, has a great cast and period setting. On top of that, The Untouchables is a great film and it wouldn’t be the worst thing to see more films like it. And yet, Gangster Squad is a total miss. My review of the Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Brolin leads as Sgt. John O’Mara, who -- in the opening sequences of the film -- sees a little girl fresh off the bus picked up by a thug who takes her with the hopes of putting her in white slavery. O’Mara’s partner wants none of it, so John storms the building by himself, killing a couple guys in the elevator and then arresting the men about to defile the girl. The action here is over the top, which sets a tone that the film is going to be a violent cartoon, but it never tops the insane sense you get from this opening action sequence. It was Mickey Cohen’s building, so the men O’Mara arrested are released, but Cohen (Penn) kills them anyway, because it’s that kind of movie.

O’Mara’s actions catch the eye of Chief Parker (Nick Nolte) who tasks John with the job of assembling a team to fight ...

20 years after its release, it's impossible to overestimate the impact of Jurassic Park. It ushered in a new era of cinema technology that melded the greatest aspects of stop-motion and animatronics with CGI breakthroughs in their infant stages. But more than that, it blew the pants off of audiences around the world. It's safe to bet that everyone who saw the film during its initial release remembers what it was like walking out of the theater. It knocked us all on our asses while also spawning a 1,000 junior archaeologists. Kids replaced their Bart Simpson posters with ones of T-rexes and raptors, everyday coming in filthy from digging in the backyard all day.

All these years later and Universal did the obvious: they released Jurassic Park 3D. Shortly after it hit theaters, it was dropped on Blu-ray. How does it fare in comparison to the mighty 2011 Blu-ray release? Hit the jump for all of our details on the Jurassic Park 3D combo pack.

Universal presents Jurassic Park in 1080p HD in 1.85:1 widescreen. The 3D disc features a new transfer that was created for the movie's 3D conversion through a restored, color-corrected 4K master of the original 35mm negative. Unfortunately for some, this disc is 3D locked, so the only way you can bask in the new transfer is by watching it on a 3D Blu-ray player. The second disc is the exact same transfer as the 2011 release.

For the film's 3D conversion, much of the grain has been erased ...

At first glance, the stand-alone release of Star Trek: TNG - The Best of Both Worlds on Blu-ray looks like typical double dipping. The Season Three Blu-ray includes the first half of the two-part episode, but not the second, forcing Trekkies the world over to either pick this set up or wait until later this summer for Season Four to arrive. Why not get a few extra bucks out of the folks who can’t wait? The set certainly doesn’t justify any extra expense… but it does make an easy option for more casual fans who don’t want to invest in two expensive season collections. Hit the jump for the full review.

And if you’re going to set one TNG adventure aside for stand-alone status, this is your horse. The two parts of The Best of Both Worlds remain the definitive conflict between the crew of the starship Enterprise and the Borg collective: a race of intergalactic space zombies bent on “assimilating” everything they see. Their first target is Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart), who they abduct and transform into their cybernetic PR man before moving on to take over the Earth. The first half ended Season Three on a cliffhanger, common practice for TV shows nowadays but fairly novel for a non-soap back then. It kept fans on the edge of their seats until they could catch the conclusion the following fall. “You ruined our summer,” one family yelled at Patrick Stewart (an incident the actor gleefully relates in the Blu-ray’s extra ...

One great thing about the release of older movies on Blu-ray is rediscovering movies you enjoyed when they came out, but now rarely get a chance to see them unedited and without commercial interruptions. One, or rather, two such movies now available on Blu-ray are Shanghai Noon and Shanghai Knights, brought to you together in this two-movie collection. It's been at least ten years since either of these films were released, so it was a genuine pleasure to review them and relive the zany buddy comedies starring Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson. Hit the jump for my review.

This two-for is a steal for fans of Chan and Wilson who want to relive the fun on Blu-ray. In addition to both feature films, there are a total of 19 deleted scenes, nine featurettes and three audio commentary tracks. The real deal is in getting to see Chan do his unprecedented stunt work in 2000 and 2003. It's also fun to take a look back and spot actors who are not only still around today, but who are still on the upswing in their careers. And with any Jackie Chan film, you're sure to get a credits sequence that's chock full o' bloopers and these films don't disappoint.

Although this is a fair amount of content, both movies and their bonus features are all crammed onto one Blu-ray disc. Normally I'd give them the pass on this if the quality was up to snuff, but even though the description says the films have been ...

David Chase, the creator of The Sopranos, may be respected for giving the world one of the greatest television shows of all time, but when he jumped into feature films with Not Fade Away, he seems to have been allowed to do whatever he wanted, but the finished product was abandoned by its studio (Paramount), who must not have thought it was Oscar material. That’s too bad as Not Fade Away is a film that feels alive with the possibilities of cinema, but also is aware of the past. The story of a band that never made it, Chase’s semi-autobiographical tale paints a great portrait of teenagers going through the 1960’s and are swept up in the cultural changes reflected in the music of the era. My review of the Blu-ray of Not Fade Away follows after the jump.

Jack Magaro plays Douglas, a young drummer who starts the film in high school. He’s got a crush on Grace Dietz (Bella Heathcote), but she doesn’t even notice him. That changes when he and his friends start to form a band. At first he plays drums, but one night he’s asked to sing lead vocals, and it starts to create some fractures in the band. Wells (Will Brill) is the lead singer, but he’s a better guitarist, while Eugene (Jack Huston) quietly supports Douglas. At home, Doug’s dad Pat (James Gandolfini) hates the way that Doug dresses and thinks he looks like someone fresh off the boat. He also wants his son ...

Of all the tidbits on the new Blu-ray of Star Trek: The Next Generation Season Three, the tastiest comes from writer Michael Piller. He planned to leave the show at the end of the season until Gene Roddenberry himself appealed for him to stay. Before that happened, he conceived of one hell of a final act: a dilemma for the crew of the Enterprise so insurmountable that even he didn’t have the slightest idea how they were going to get out of it. Of course, he came back and subsequently came up with a corker of a solution. But without that go-for-broke fearlessness – without the desire to write a beginning that no ending could possibly match – we wouldn’t have had The Best of Both Worlds. And not only TNG, but television in general would have lost one of its unquestioned high points. Hit the jump for the full review.

That episode stands out in the Blu-ray set too, setting the crew against the seemingly unstoppable Borg and ending with the horrific revelation that Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) has been assimilated into the enemy’s ranks. The cliffhanger sent fans into a tizzy… and more importantly, raised the very real question as to whether or not this was the end for Picard. The series could quite easily have continued with Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) as Captain, along with newcomer Commander Shelby (Elizabeth Dennehy) as the new Number One. Dennehy marks one of the episode’s other selling points: brash, prickly, and perfectly ...

Director Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) turned in one of the year's most stunning visual epics with his adaptation of Life of Pi and was rewarded with an Oscar for his work. Now you can enjoy the beautiful spectacle and powerful message of the story in the comfort of your own home with the movie's release on Blu-ray. Life of Pi is one of those rare films where the 3D component actually complements the viewing experience in a noticeable way, which is why it's drawn comparisons to James Cameron's Avatar. This description works just fine on a superficial level, but Life of Pi has so much more to offer; new discoveries both on screen and embedded within the story make repeat watching a rather rewarding experience. Hit the jump for my review of Life of Pi on Blu-ray.

On the surface, Life of Pi is a story about the titular character, Pi Patel, who survives a shipwreck only to be set adrift in a small life boat with a full-grown Bengal tiger on board. On a deeper level, the film delves into questions of faith and theology, of story and perception, and ultimately of life and death. Lee does a remarkable job at switching between the dynamics of telling a human interest story and that of a sweeping epic full of scenes of incredible natural beauty and devastation. I don't often review the cinematic content on Blu-ray reviews, so if you're interested you can read my movie review of Life of Pi here. I will say, however, that upon a ...
