Getting a much-needed boost before heading to Cannes to shop for foreign buyers, the John Gotti, Sr. biopic Gotti has landed director Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger). When last we reported on the status of this picture, it was stuck in neutral, citing a lack of funding. Relativity Media now has the U.S. distribution rights to the mobster picture that stars John Travolta in the title role. The movie is based on a story by Gotti’s son, John A. Gotti, with an original screenplay by Leo Rossi and revisions by Lem Dobbs. Johnston plans to start shooting (as it were) in New York on September 9th. Hit the jump for more.

We don’t often feature Sweded trailers here on Collider, but when we do you can bet that they’re worth a watch. Today’s installment features The Wolverine and came to our attention via director James Mangold himself, who proclaimed the Sweded version “FANTASTIC” over Twitter. I’m inclined to agree. Both versions are matched up shot for shot with the Sweded version having to get creative with their special effects on a shoestring budget. You can check out the original trailer for The Wolverine here and hit the jump to see the Sweded version and a side-by-side comparison.
Starring Hugh Jackman, Will Yun Lee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Brian Tee, Rila Fukushima, Tao Okamoto and Svetlana Khodchenkova, The Wolverine opens on July 26th.

Earlier today at WonderCon, Kenny Powers (Danny McBride) told me some fantastic news: Eastbound & Down season 4 starts filming at the end of May and it’s about “what happens to the hero after he rides off into the sunset.” While we previously reported HBO had picked up the show for a fourth season, news on everyone’s favorite foul-mouthed, morally questionable ball player has been very quiet for the past eight months. Thankfully, it seems Jody Hill and McBride have come up with a storyline they’re happy with and if filming begins in May, perhaps the new episodes will air late this year. Fingers crossed.
However, if you’re hoping to see a lot more Kenny Powers after the fourth season, McBride made it sound like this is really going to be the final outing. He talked about how they have other characters and projects they want to work on, and while they love making Eastbound, it takes time; I think they’re ready to say goodbye. Since Eastbound was originally planned for three seasons, I’m just happy we’re getting a bit more time with Powers before they say goodbye. Hit the jump for what McBride had to say on Eastbound and look for the full interview soon.

History is written by the winners, and in Indonesia in 1965, the winners were killers. In Joshua Oppenheimer‘s shocking and thought-provoking documentary The Act of Killing, we bear witness to a nation transformed by its past into a sick, twisted culture that seems like an alternate reality created by a science-fiction writer. It’s a horrifying “What if?” where killers are revered as celebrities, smile about their mass executions, and barely wrestle with any question of remorse. The Act of Killing brilliantly uses the power of media to ask if a monster was created by violent entertainment, can then he be aware of his monstrosities through the same medium? Smashing together perception and reflection, Oppenheimer has created a mind-bending picture that’s deeply disturbing, darkly comic, and endlessly fascinating.

It’s been less than a week since this year’s Oscars, but The Weinstein Company has already set fall release dates for four of next year’s contenders. And with Meryl Streep in the mix, it’s safe to say that Harvey “Thanked More Than God” Weinstein’s chances are looking good. So what’s on tap? Check it out below:
- Fruitvale – This Sundance darling (read our review), the true story of a 22-year-old Bay Area resident who was shot to death in the early hours of Jan. 1, 2009, will open October 18.
- August: Osage County – A family comes together after their alcoholic patriarch goes missing in this adaptation of Tracy Lett’s comedic play, which is slated for November 8.
- Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom – Idris Elba portrays Nelson Mandela in this film based on the South African president’s 1995 autobiography, scheduled for November 29.

Warner Bros. Digital released the first trailer for season two of Kevin Tancharoen‘s web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy this weekend. Here’s the synopsis:
“The Mortal Kombat Legacy continues in Season 2 as Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Kenshi, and Ermac join the ranks. The rivalries and histories of these fierce warriors will unfold as Raiden and his recruits clash against the dark forces of Outworld. The epic battle for Earthrealm has finally begun.”
The production values look good, so I can see why this is a hit with fans of the game. There is no set premiere date yet, but the painful wordplay at the end of the clip promises the ten episodes of season two are “Koming Soon.” Watch the trailer after the jump.

Eli Roth has kept busy these past years with acting and producing roles, but his new film The Green Inferno will be his first feature directing gig since 2007′s Hostel: Part II. Roth has released a brief synopsis for The Green Inferno on his Tumblr: “A group of student activists from New York City travel to the Amazon to protect a dying tribe, but crash in the jungle and are taken hostage by the very natives they saved.” As you can see from the image, The Green Inferno looks like Roth’s spin on cannibal horror movies. I didn’t care for Hostel, but maybe Roth’s new flick has eased up on the torture porn.
Hit the jump to check out the image. The film stars Lorenza Izzo (Aftershock), Ariel Levy (Aftershock), Daryl Sabara (Spy Kids), and Kirby Bliss Blanton (Project X). Click here for Steve’s interview at TIFF with Roth where he talks about The Green Inferno.

Earlier today I was on AMC Movie Talk hosted by John Campea. We talked about our thoughts on the Star Wars spinoff movies, whether we think J.J. Abrams will direct the Portal or Half-Life movies, the Star Trek sequel, Die Hard 6, Godzilla, if Venom be in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, found footage movies, whether Marvel might buy back Spider-Man from Sony, and a lot more. So if you’d like to see what I had to say on any of those subjects, watch it after the jump.

When last we reported on the development of author Gillian Flynn’s Dark Places adaptation, Amy Adams was in negotiations to star. Now it appears that Charlize Theron (Prometheus) is circling the role instead. Gilles Paquet-Brenner (Sarah Keys) wrote the script and is set to direct the decidedly dark drama that centers on a woman who survived the brutal murder of her family when she was seven. Twenty-five years after testifying against her brother as the murderer, a group obsessed with investigating notorious crimes draws her out for more information. Hit the jump for more on Dark Places.

The first trailer for Zal Batmanglij’s The East is now online. A follow-up film to Batmanglij’s Sound of My Voice (both co-written by Batmanglij and Brit Marling), The East centers on an undercover operative (Marling) who infiltrates a domestic terrorist organization but becomes conflicted when she starts falling for the charismatic leader. Fans of Sound of My Voice will recognize some very similar themes here, though the trailer for The East is decidedly more aggressive and promises to deliver on the tension. The East also stars Ellen Page and Alexander Skarsgard. Hit the jump to watch the first trailer for The East.

As part of the CBS portion of the TCA Press Tour, CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler took some time to talk about current and upcoming shows for the network. During the interview, she spoke about how recent violent events might impact their decision-making process for the coming pilot season, the confidence they have in sophomore series Person of Interest, what made Elementary the right show for the coveted post-Super Bowl spot, the renewal status of How I Met Your Mother, and their plans for Under the Dome, from Stephen King, Steven Spielberg and Brian K. Vaughan, and why summer is a good spot for it. Check out what she had to say after the jump.
