As someone with a soft spot for pet-like creatures, I’ve had my eye on Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie since the moment it was announced. The film focuses on Sharlto Copley’s Chappie, the first robot with the ability to think for himself. As a big fan of District 9, I was mildly disappointed by Elysium, but it looks as though Chappie will be more in line with the former, tackling a big topic on an intimate, character-driven level. The new trailer is certainly loaded with sweet moments, a favorite of which is watching Chappie spend some quality time with a dog, but I’m not really seeing the comedy in it. It’s a little darker than expected but with some charm and sentimentality in the mix, somewhat reminiscent of E.T., and that combination works exceedingly well.
Hit the jump to check out the first Chappie trailer and to see some new images as well. The film is due in theaters on March 27, 2015 also stars Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel, Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er, Jose Pablo Cantillo and Sigourney Weaver.

Here’s the official synopsis:
Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings – some good, some bad – and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man. But there’s one thing that makes Chappie different from anyone else: he is a robot. The first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. His life, his story, will change the way the world looks at robots and humans forever.
