Chevy Chase Talks VACATION Reboot and FLETCH, Says He’s Written a Script for New VACATION

Chevy Chase Michael K. Williams Community interview slice

Earlier today I was lucky enough to be able to visit the set of one of my favorite shows on any channel: NBC’s Community.  I got to visit the set in anticipation of the season two DVD, which hits stores September 6th, and season three, which premieres on Thursday September 22nd at 8/7c.  While I’ll have a lot of video interviews with the entire cast very soon, I spoke with Chevy Chase about the upcoming Vacation reboot and a new Fletch movie and wanted to bring you what he said as soon as possible.

A reboot of the Vacation franchise is currently in development at Warner Bros., and when I spoke with producer David Dobkin last month, he said that the new film would tell son Rusty’s story and have him encountering the same hijinks that his father did. Dobkin played coy about Chase making an appearance in the film, but Chase’s answer today about a Vacation reboot came as a bit of a shock.  He said he’s written a different script for a new Vacation film with co-star Beverly D’Angelo.  He said:

“I’ve written an idea that would be basically like a “Swiss Family Griswold.” There’s a cruise, there’s a fire on the ship, we think the whole ship’s on fire and we jump—it’s just a little fire—and we end up on an island where we meet Randy somewhere who’s been left there from an old Survivor series.”

Hit the jump for more.

vacation-movie-posterWhile I’m not sure if Chase was being serious or joking around, it was the first time I’d heard him say that he’d written a script, so I thought I’d post what he said today. Also, it sounds like he still wants to play Fletch…

In addition, if you’re a fan of The Wire and Michael K. Williams, you should watch the video further down the page.  Look for the full interview soon.

Collider: There’s been a lot of talk about a reboot of Vacation at New Line. Have they approached you to appear?

Chase: Actually I think it went back to Warners. I think New Line sold it to Warners. I don’t know what’s gonna happen with that. It’s the same thing with Fletch, I think they had Fletch and then they sold that to Warners too. So we’ll see. I mean look, I’m not gonna do Fletch unless I’m Fletch, if they start writing something for a kid who’s Fletch and I’m just helping out, “Bye.” I mean, there’s no reason why, at my age, I can’t still be Fletch. I’ve always been getting this impression that they’d like me to be mentoring a younger Fletch type thing. No, what am I James Coburn on a Western? No. Nothing against James Coburn, he’s great. Is he alive? Yeah I think he is. I think he’s very much alive. And Vacation, actually Beverly D’Angelo and I have been working on our own script, which is pretty dang funny. I’ve written an idea that would be basically like a “Swiss Family Griswold.” There’s a cruise, there’s a fire on the ship, we think the whole ship’s on fire and we jump—it’s just a little fire—and we end up on an island where we meet Randy somewhere who’s been left there from an old Survivor series. I like that idea. It’s hard to sell these things to the Warners people. It depends on who’s there and what their mood is and what they think people are gonna like.

When will this rebooting of movies end? I guess we have to admit that an original idea is not considered bankable by Hollywood anymore. I’m tired of hearing of some of my favorite movies being “retold”. If I want to watch Fletch, I’ll watch Chevy as Fletch, I don’t want to see Seth Rogen.

    • Steve Rudzinski

It won’t. It’s very hard to make bank on something new and original these days. As far as up to the 90s, there weren’t that many tv channels or forms of media. These days you have 300 channels and the internet so you have a media overload, things blur. You don’t remember a show no problem as opposed to a show, movie, or even toy you grew up with.

So while original ideas are NOT dead in Hollywood, reboots and remakes will keep coming because another “Nightmare on Elm Street” is guaranteed to make money even if it’s bad and an insult to the originals, just because of name recognition.

I’d rather see Jason Lee as Fletch, than either one of them!

The whole world LOV ES Chevy Chase no matter what character he is playing, but yes I think most of us are partial to Clark Griswold and Fletch. Those are some of his most memorable characters. Warner Bros. is STUPID for not jumping at the chance to reproduce these movies! It’s what everybody wants to see. You go to any forum and I promise you will find person after person BEGGING Chevy to bring back the Griswold’s and Fletch. I grew up in the 80′s and everyone I know LOVES these movies because they can relate to the dysfunctional family (which is most of us, lol ) no punt intended. I guess in some way it makes us all feel a little less crazier than the next person and allows us to all lalugh at ourselves and what we all probably look like compared to the Griswold’s in our times of family brawls lol. It’s a family tradition in my house and lots of my friends as well to watch these movies, especially Christmas Vacation every year. We all sit around and eat popcorn and cookies and just laugh and laugh, we have the best time watching these movies because they never get old and never fail to deliver a gut wrenching laugh or two. WAKE UP WARNER BROTHERS! and LISTEN to the people and what they want! GIVE US MORE CLARK AND FLETCH!

Chevy has been talking about the “Swiss Family Griswold” idea for several years now. I first heard him mention it around 2003/04, but it’s popped up a few times since then.

Unfortunately, I suspect the poorly-received tv movie that was produced in 2003 may have killed such a script’s chances- especially since it featured Cousin Eddie getting stranded on a desert island. (It was even titled, “Christmas Vacation 2: Cousin Eddie’s Island Adventure”.)

Incidentally, Chevy and Beverly did manage to reprise their famous roles back in 2010, in a short film titled “Hotel Hell Vacation”. It was basically just part of Homeaway.com’s Super Bowl promotion. The whole thing is viewable on youtube:

I personally agree with Mr. Chase. He should star in both franchises and I would really rather see a Swiss Family Griswold than a film based entirely on Rusty. Those Super Bowl spots prove that he and Beverly can still tackle the roles and be funny in them. Warners if you are listening don’t put Clark and Ellen Griswold in the back seat, they belong front and center!
