Diehard fans of the Child’s Play franchise can finally stop holding their breath. A sixth entry in the murderous doll series has now been confirmed, with production set to begin this September. Last March a rumor surfaced that MGM was looking to reboot the serial killer franchise, but the studio quickly responded by saying no such plans were in the works. Not to fear, as the folks over at Moviehole have confirmed that Universal Home Entertainment is moving forward with a direct-to-DVD sequel entitled Curse of Chucky. Hit the jump for more.
Longtime fans of the franchise will be happy to know that, per Moviehole, Don Mancini will write, produce, and direct Curse of Chucky. Mancini has written every entry thus far, and directed 2004’s Seed of Chucky, which taught us the lovely mechanics of doll reproduction. The logline for Curse of Chucky is as follows:
“Chucky arrives to wreck havoc within a family that’s regrouped for a funeral. In the wake of her mother’s passing, a young woman – in a wheelchair since birth – is forced to put up with her sister, brother-in-law, niece and their nanny as they say their goodbyes to mother. When people start turning up dead, the fearless Nica discovers the culprit might be a “strange doll” she was sent a couple of days earlier.”
The plan with this new pic is to take the series back to its earlier, darker routes. The camp of Seed of Chucky and Bride of Chucky will be toned down considerably, with an emphasis on making the franchise scary again. That’s really not a difficult task when you have a doll that looks as terrifying/insane as Chucky. Brad Dourif is returning yet again to voice the titular knife-wielder, but no other casting has been announced. I’ve only ever seen Child’s Play 2 and Bride of Chucky (my childhood habit watching things out of order was strange), but I’m assuming longtime fans of the series will greet the confirmation of Curse of Chucky as welcome news.
