Diehard fans of the Child’s Play franchise can finally stop holding their breath.  A sixth entry in the murderous doll series has now been confirmed, with production set to begin this September.  Last March a rumor surfaced that MGM was looking to reboot the serial killer franchise, but the studio quickly responded by saying no such plans were in the works.  Not to fear, as the folks over at Moviehole have confirmed that Universal Home Entertainment is moving forward with a direct-to-DVD sequel entitled Curse of Chucky.  Hit the jump for more.

childs-play-6-sequel-curse-of-chuckyLongtime fans of the franchise will be happy to know that, per Moviehole, Don Mancini will write, produce, and direct Curse of Chucky.  Mancini has written every entry thus far, and directed 2004’s Seed of Chucky, which taught us the lovely mechanics of doll reproduction.  The logline for Curse of Chucky is as follows:

“Chucky arrives to wreck havoc within a family that’s regrouped for a funeral. In the wake of her mother’s passing, a young woman – in a wheelchair since birth – is forced to put up with her sister, brother-in-law, niece and their nanny as they say their goodbyes to mother. When people start turning up dead, the fearless Nica discovers the culprit might be a “strange doll” she was sent a couple of days earlier.”

The plan with this new pic is to take the series back to its earlier, darker routes.  The camp of Seed of Chucky and Bride of Chucky will be toned down considerably, with an emphasis on making the franchise scary again.  That’s really not a difficult task when you have a doll that looks as terrifying/insane as Chucky.  Brad Dourif is returning yet again to voice the titular knife-wielder, but no other casting has been announced.  I’ve only ever seen Child’s Play 2 and Bride of Chucky (my childhood habit watching things out of order was strange), but I’m assuming longtime fans of the series will greet the confirmation of Curse of Chucky as welcome news.  Watch trailers for all the previous films below.

  1. It’s seriously time to reboot this (albeit done right). The last couple of entries have been utter crap and in fact the only decent one out of the lot is the first.

      • I doubt he was kidding. The first films in the Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween franchises were all the best. Same with Child’s Play, which also had the iconic killer.

  2. Awesome! Finally they’re going back to the dark roots of the original! I just wish this was a theatrical bow! Either way, cool to see Chucky back! And back in the way the films should be portrayed: dark, scary, and fucked up!

  3. I’ve only ever seen Child’s Play 2 and Bride of Chucky (my childhood habit watching things out of order was strange)

FIRE THIS GUY.. what the hell? I’ll write for Collider.

p.s the first film is awesome

  4. great news, i hated Seed of Chucky and thought Bride of Chucky was okay but didnt compare with the other Chucky films. its great that they are taking it back to their routes in a way its kind of a remake

  5. i loved bride but then again ive never seen 2 or 3 i have seen the first movie and tht one was rlly good ok so seed was stupid but i dnt get y all of u ppl r always hatin on bride

  6. now tht i looked back on it i watched seed of chucky only a month ago on netflix in my point of view it wasnt all tht bad it was ok but not as good as the first film

  7. I can’t wait for the curs of chcky to come out. the only child’s play movies I’ve seen so far are child’ play, child’s play 2, bride of chucky, and the seed of chucky. The Bride of Chucky movie wasn’t bad, it was ok, but the seed of chucky? Sucked.
