The concept behind this summer’s Danger Mouse album Rome was a neat one, especially for Collider readers.  Danger Mouse and Italian composer Daniele Luppi were inspired by the music from spaghetti westerns.  They recorded the album using vintage equipment, often with musicians from the era who worked on spaghetti western soundtracks.  The process is about to come full circle, as Rome will soon be turned into a movie.  First, though, things will take a sharp left into a post-apocalyptic wasteland.  Music video director Chris Milk will helm the project, based on the Alden Bell novel The Reapers Are the Angels.  The story centers on a young girl who “can’t remember a time before the zombies”; she struggles to survive as she wanders the desolate landscape, plagued by inner turmoil.

I don’t know the album or the book enough to tell you how they fit together.  Maybe you can deduce the link yourself after the jump with the full book synopsis and a few cuts from Rome.

Zombies have infested a fallen America. A young girl named Temple is on the run. Haunted by her past and pursued by a killer, Temple is surrounded by death and danger, hoping to be set free.

For twenty-five years, civilization has survived in meager enclaves, guarded against a plague of the dead. Temple wanders this blighted landscape, keeping to herself and keeping her demons inside her heart. She can’t remember a time before the zombies, but she does remember an old man who took her in and the younger brother she cared for until the tragedy that set her on a personal journey toward redemption. Moving back and forth between the insulated remnants of society and the brutal frontier beyond, Temple must decide where ultimately to make a home and find the salvation she seeks. [Amazon]

“Two Against One”

“The World”

“Season’s Trees”

Nope, I still don’t have a great grasp of what’s going on.  But I admire the ambition, and look forward to watching the synergy bloom.  According to Variety, Anthony Bregman (Our Idiot Brother) will produce alongside the ineffable Megan Ellison (True Grit).

This bit of news is bitter sweet. Awesome that the music will accompany a film, not so awesome that the music itself inspire me to write my own screenplay inspired by the very same music. Hope Mr Milk and co. do it justice.

This sounds amazing. The only thing that could make this record better is zombies.

As a Danger Mouse fan I found the album to be disappointing. Not bad, just not what I expected.

They need to get him on board as a creative consultant at least.

Although, if somehow Jack White could actually play the lead…
