Deadline reports that Christoph Waltz, who is due to receive an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor on March 7th, is joining Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson in Francis Lawrence’s adaptation of Sara Gruen’s novel Water for Elephants. I had zero interest in this project before, but now I’m excited out of my mind for it, not just because I want to see more Waltz in movies, but because Mike Felming describes the characters as, “a dangerous paranoid schizophrenic animal trainer who is as mean to his wife (Witherspoon) as he is to the circus creatures.” The story follows a second-rate circus during the Depression. Pattinson will play a veterinary medicine student who falls for the star performer/wife of the dangerous paranoid schizophrenic animal trainer.
We previously reported that Sean Penn was in talks to join the film, but his talks fizzled and so it now looks like Waltz will have the privilege of playing such an incredible-sounding role.

Waltz will be good in this i'm sure, but i loved the book and was really looking forward to seeing penn take the role
Hmm, never heard of the project but if its set during the great depression in a circus I can imagine this thing looking similar to Carnivale, aesthetically anyways.
I always though Carnivale made for a great lead-off piece for something like the Geek Love adaptation (which I hope finally gets out of production hell, otherwise I'm going to have to start directing so I can make it).
Sounds a bit odd to me.
Pattinson plays the protagonist Jacob, Witherspoon is Marlena. Okay so far. Then we have the brutal animal trainer, Marlena's husband August AND the mean and violent circus owner Uncle Al.
Christoph Waltz will play the character of August, the husband? But WHO plays Uncle Al then?
I could imagine that Sean Penn is still in to play August and Waltz plays Uncle Al instead.
Other characters are the dwarf Kinko, the alcoholic Camel and the nurse Rosemary.
Anyway, great news, because of the Waltz-factor.
super excited. love the book!
