Christopher Guest Looking to Make New Improvised Comedy Series FAMILY TREE Starring Chris O’Dowd

     May 23, 2012

Before Chris O’Dowd really started making a splash on the movie scene with Bridesmaids and Pirate Radio, I was already a fan of the funnyman from his work in the British TV series The IT Crowd (check it out on Netflix Instant). And with his rising star in Hollywood (he next appears in Judd Apatow’s This is Forty), we’re only going to see more of him on the big screen. But it also sounds like more TV is in store for O’Dowd and with a truly brilliant man of comedy. Apparently mockumentary and satire icon Christopher Guest (the behind films like Best in Show and A Mighty Wind) is working on a new improvised comedy series called Family Tree that would see O’Dowd as a man attempting to track down his real family.

Hit the jump for more.

Aside from the fact that this is about the best damn TV news I’ve heard in a long time, it gets even better as Vulture reports Guest, and Jim Piddock (who appeared in the aforementioned mockumentaries from Guest, not to mention For Your Consideration, the director’s last film from six years ago) are looking to take this series to a place where they don’t have to worry about commercials. Apparently HBO, Showtime and even Netflix are the current targets as NBC Universal International Television looks to sell the series. Hopefully this means that Guest will also round up all his usual suspects to get in on the laughs for this new series. Guest is easily one of the most brilliant satirists around today, and the fact that we don’t get more of his work is appalling.
