Christopher Meloni Up for MAN OF STEEL

     June 24, 2011

Following his surprising exit from NBC’s Law and Order: SVU, Christopher Meloni just landed himself a not too shabby gig. Deadline reports that the actor is currently in negotiations to star in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. There’s no word on what part he’s up for, but the report states that it’s a “major role” (one hopes it involves fridge-humping). Henry Cavill is set as Superman himself, while Amy Adams will take on Lois Lane. Warner Bros. rounded up some A-list talent for Superman’s parents: Kevin Costner and Diane Lane will play Clark Kent’s adoptive Earth parents, while Russell Crowe is poised to star as biological father Jor-El and Julia Ormond recently entered talks to play his Kryptonian mother Lara Lor-Van.

On the villain side, Michael Shannon will be doing his evil thing as General Zod and Antje Traue is set as Faora. Casting should be close to complete by now, with production set to begin next month in Vancouver. Snyder directs from a script by David Goyer, with Christopher Nolan producing. Man of Steel is eying a holiday 2012 release.

Ill always remember him as ‘Sven’ from Fear and Loathing….. hahaha…. have no idea who he’s playin…. Perry White? Seems young for the part… maybe there’s another villain in the movie?

  • y2jcb

    Obviously he is Non.

  • Rev. Slappy

Dear God in Heaven he would make a fantastic Lex Luthor.

    • dean

Definitely! I was just about to say, potential Lex Luthor? I’ve only seen him in Oz but he rocked the shit outta that. I’d love it if he was Lex.

  • murdernexxus

I didn’t think they’d even get to Lex but you may be right!

Oh God, not Lex Luthor again. Hasn’t WB learned anything from the comics and the last film? Use different villains for Chrissakes! The only reasons to see MoS is Zack Snyder getting back on track after a somewhat lack lustre Sucker Punch. And Michael Shannon giving Henry Cavill a severe Jesus Slap!

    • Harry

fair point but that’s like chris nolan not including the joker in his batman trilogy, lex luthor really the only villian everybody knows and really expects

      • Robert

Well Nolan used Joker after like 15 years (or more) of him not being used. Using Luthor after only 6 years, especially since it was the last Superman movie out, may go against everything the movie has going for it.

At the same time, maybe seeing Lex Luthor at the end, setting up a sequel could be nice.

      • Rev. Slappy

Who knows if this is actually right or not, but I read somewhere that Luthor is in Man of Steel in a similar way to how the Joker was “in” Batman Begins. He’s mentioned and may even appear, but the film sets him up to be the big bad in the next movie.

  • Jazzy Jace

PS: Why not get Gerard Butler to be Jor El? His Leonidas was something else.

  • Paul Webb

He and Mariska Hargitay’s Contracts are up at the end of this upcoming season and he has expressed his interest in leaving.

    • Eric Nixon

Had you actually read the article, it said he has already left the show.

My pick for Lex Luthor is Jon Hamm.

  • Mike Cruz

Just because there’s already a villain, doesn’t mean they can’t have Lex. Lex is hot shit in Metropolis and if he’s not seen just as a supporting character then it would make no sense for him to just show up in future films. Lex doesn’t have to be the bad guy, sure he’s a douche, but he doesn’t have to be like “Let me try and trap Superman in a cage made of green rocks”. He could just be doing what he does best, scheming up plots for personal gain and having them foiled by Superman, a threat that didn’t exist before. He gets interested but doesn’t know what to do, the Kryptonians come in and practically kick Supes ass to a point, Lex goes “Oh, it can be hurt.” cue sequel. It just makes too much sense for him to be in it at least a little.

    • Mike Cruz

And I think Meloni would make a great Lex so let’s hope this works out.

  • Michael

I think that Elias Koteas could also make for a good Lex Luthor.

    • Northern Star

Yes, Michael dude, YES!!! You’re absolutely right about Elias Koteas as a potential Lex Luthor, he is, without doubt, one of the most underrated actors of his generation, and would be an intensely intelligent yet still quietly malevolent Luthor, he’d get my vote, the man should be a much bigger star than he is.

Mind you, if Chris Meloni is being cast in the Lex Luthor role, it is an inspired piece of casting, as a longtime viewer of ‘Special Victims Unit’, I always said that when Meloni left the show, if he played his cards right, he could be a MASSIVE star, he has a real charisma onscreen, and is one heck of a varied actor, to boot. I’m actually getting excited about this movie (and I never thought I would)…

      • Northern Star

Just read on ‘Cinema Blend’ that Meloni himself has said he WON’T be playing Lex Luthor, but rather “a general”- aw, DAMMIT, I was actually excited about the idea of Meloni in that role, what a waste! He’ll still be good whatever he does, but Snyder et al better come up with one hell of an actor to play Luthor, which they probably will. Elias Koteas, anyone…?

  • Will

    Lex, definitely
