On Monday night at CinemaCon (formerly ShoWest), Paramount, DreamWorks and Marvel world premiered a lot of footage from their 2011 slate to attendees.  Thankfully, I was in the Coliseum theater so I got to watch 20 minutes from Kenneth Branagh’s Thor, almost 20 minutes from Joe Johnston’s Captain America: The First Avenger, 22 minutes from J.J. Abrams Super 8, a number of scenes from Kung Fu Panda 2, and 15 minutes from Puss in Boots.  While all of the footage looked great, the footage from Thor and Captain America made me wish both movies were coming out next week.  Trust me, all you haters that have been writing Thor doesn’t look good, you’re all going to eat some humble pie once you see the movie.  Also, while I’m not one of those folks who thinks Super 8 is the greatest gift to cinema in 2011, I will admit the footage looked very impressive and I think it could be this generations Stand By Me.  I’m excited to see the finished film.

Anyway, while we’ve been asked not to reveal anything specific from what we saw tonight, I recorded a video blog with Peter from /Film and Alex from FirstShowing and we recapped what we got to see and our thoughts on all the footage.  Hit the jump to check it out, and look for a lot more from CinemaCon tomorrow.

Thor (starring Chris Hemsworth) gets released May 6, Kung Fu Panda 2 is May 26, Super 8 hits theaters June 10, Captain America: The First Avenger (starring Chris Evans) is July 22, and Puss in Boots gets released November 4.  All five films should definitely be on your radar.

    Fuck you, spammer!

Thanks Frosty! This was an excellent summary and now I’m stoked for Thor like never before. (The others were already in good hands as I was pretty excited for Cap & Super8 before this.) Cheers! :)

Captain America has the same tone as Rocketeer? How’s that a bad thing? I’m pretty sure that’s why Joe Johnston was hired. I’m stoked.

This is all good news to hear your perspectives on Thor, Cap and Super 8! Thanks for the insight!

ive never seen the rocketeer but i just watched the trailer and i can see what they were saying about joe johnston’s cheesiness, but as also stated, it seems like johnston’s cheesiness works in the context of his surrounding story..and besides, chris evans showed us in “not another teen movie”, no less, that he can make even the most ludicrous jokes seem legitimate

That sounds fair to me. There’s definitely cheese in The Rocketeer, but it works for the film.

The Rocketeer has a very period feel in the same way the Indiana Jones films have a period feel, albeit with a lesser budget. (I think the gang even pointed that out.)

In fact, The Rocketeer has hints of a technological arms race between Howard Hughes and the Nazis (implying Warner Von Braun, since we’re talking rockets). Hughes even shows up and plays a fun plot point in the film. With Hydra and the different technology shown in the Cap trailer, I bet the Cap film will feel like a story told in the same exact setting as The Rocketeer. (I realize we’re talking different universes, creators, companies and storylines here…)

If you get a chance to watch The Rocketeer, check it out. If you get a chance to read the collected comic edition, definitely check it out. As with everything, it’s a thousand times better as a book!

I enjoyed The Rocketeer I truly enjoyed it, still do. It and the first Indiana Jones movie have the same feel as Captain America does. That is not a bad thing though. As for Captain America, so far by the trailer I have seen, I just am really not impressed by it. (Sorry, that is just only my opinion- don’t hate me). I can’t see myself watching something so cheesy and Chris Evans, I just so far do not like his acting in this one. I just wish that, whoever wrote this script – could have given him something more intelligent to say or at least not so predictable. To me, he just comes off kind of lame and unbelieveable in the trailer. The only part I really enjoyed about the trailer was seeing and hearing Tommy Lee Jones. Just by the way he holds his face – it is hard not to take him seriously. I couldn’t take Evans seriously in the trailer for Cap or his portrayal as Johnny Storm or in the updated version of the comic book series (by DC) The Losers (Yes, the Losers is a comic book series – Evans has actually played 3 comic book characters). He seems to show around the same acting skills in all three Comic book roles. I guess it doesn’t peak my interest in him as playing Cap. He has played all 3 characters basically with about the same type of personality. I expected more from his acting this time – just haven’t seen it so far. He has done cheesy in all three movies so far. Maybe when you play so many comic book characters (even Ryan Reynolds has 4 now – he’s Hannibal King, Deadpool, Green Lantern, and now Nick in R.I.P.D) it is hard to differentiate between them – they all seem the same anymore. (The Green Lantern also reminds me of all of Ryan Reynolds other comic book roles.) As much as I love The Rocketeer, I don’t believe Johnston can even help Chris Evans come off better than he has in the other 2 comic book movies he has already made. Again this is only my opinion, everyone has their own and I believe in everyone else’s also.
As for Thor, I am very excited about seeing Chris Hemsworth. He and Branaugh have peaked my interest ( even though – it reminds me alot of Clash of the Titans – that isn’t such a terrible thing – is it??) I am still extremely interested. I will see this one. Trailers look good. Super 8 also looks great.
