Cinematographer Wally Pfister Wants to Shoot BATMAN 3 in IMAX

As we reported back in April, cinematographer Wally Pfister (The Dark Knight, Inception) wants to shoot Batman 3 in IMAX.  And I’m sure fans would love for him to do so.  Folks raved about the scenes in The Dark Knight that were shot in IMAX.  Even director Brad Bird (Ratatouille) said his teenage sons, “thought that the IMAX used in The Dark Knight was more realistic than the 3D in these new movies. Speaking to MTV, Pfister reiterated his desire to shoot the entire movie in IMAX.  He also says he’s not sold on 3D (neither in Nolan).

So what’s the problem?  Well, there are three: IMAX cameras are loud, bulky, and the film can’t be longer than 165 minutes.  However, IMAX has been trying to shrink down their camera, and the question is whether or not they’ll have a working model by the time Nolan plans to begin filming on Batman 3 next spring.  Hit the jump for more on what Pfister had to say about IMAX and 3D.

I thought Inception‘s cinematography was gorgeous and I was heartened to hear what Pfister had to say about IMAX and 3D:

“I must say I’m a huge IMAX fan. I like IMAX more than I like 3-D,” he explained. “Chris’ films are so densely layered and have so much going on visually in every way that IMAX helps enhance that because of the scope and the scale of it — it becomes a much larger canvas to paint on. That’s what we found on ‘Dark Knight.’

“I’m not a big fan of 3-D,” he continued. “I liken it to my View-Master I had 40 years ago. Are you really getting more out of the story with 3-D? When you separate those different planes and you’re creating artificial depth, it looks phony to me.”

However, it should be noted that no decision regarding 3D for Batman 3 has yet been made.  Fingers crossed, it will be in IMAX, but not 3D.

    In Imax, definitely. The IMAX scenes from Dark Night are brilliant

    Knowing Warner as of late the film will be shot in 2D then about a month before release Warner will decide that they want to do a crappy 3D conversion.

    I'm all for IMAX, and 3D is fine as well, but it should be a decision made early on by the director, not a decision made late in the game by the studio so they can make $2 extra per ticket. If Nolan doesn't want to shoot the film in 3D than I don't want see the film in 3D.

    Shoot the whole damn thing in IMAX. I hate this lame 3D fad. Damn you, James Cameron.

    Chris Nolan has the power and authority to choose if he wants to do it in 3D, and I'm sure he's not going to. Warner won't risk losing his brilliant mind by forcing him to do lame ass 3D.

    Then again Warner has made mistakes with the Batman franchise before. Let's hope they've learned from their mistakes.

    I trust Nolan and Pfister in their decision. Hopefully they can shoot the entire film on IMAX; that would be most impressive. I love IMAX, but I also like 3D. I actually like 3D like in Avatar but I'm not a fan in how studios are post-converting crappy movies just to get the extra ticket revenue like in The Last Airbender.

    I've read (http://www.geekosystem.com/christopher-nolan-in…) that Nolan actually converted some of Inception scenes into 3D and liked what he saw, but it wouldn't have made the release date, because he wanted the conversion to be solid and not this fast, blurring, crappy mess that other studios have done. His biggest gripe is how dim the picture looks, which is true, I've seen Up and Avatar in 3D and whenever I took off the glasses the picture was so much brighter.

    If Nolan ever decided to make a 3D film, I'm sure it'll be great. It would be shot on actual film since that's his medium, but it would be post-converted in a longer process that will look great. If anyone can make 3D not so dim and without the blurriness in a solid film, it's Nolan. Even if he decided to not convert it to 3D, Batman 3 will still be great.

    that opening shot in Dark Knight on Imax screens, felt like I was floating in the air. Waaaaay beter than 3d especially no glasses. I always felt the same way about the view master feel. It doesn't feel real.

    Couldn't agree more.

    IMAX = Good

    3D = Bad

    IMAX's odd aspect ratio negatively impacts the composition of most of these shots. How can cinematographers endorse it?

    This is so lame.

    IMAX only is definitely the best choice for filming this film. 3D would ruin it.

    Good cinemetographers can work with all aspect ratios. All movies were in the 4:3 ratio (similar to IMAX) before the mid-1950's

    No! IMAX is so much better then crappy 3D those glasses give me headaches!
