Last week we reported that Dustin Lance Black, the boyish screenwriter behind the Oscar-winning screenplay for Milk, has scripted the biopic of J. Edgar Hoover, the director of the FBI from its 1935 founding to his 1972 death. Like Milk, the film is going by the surname-only title Hoover. And just as Black’s Milk script caught the eye of arthouse A-lister Gus Van Sant, the Hoover screenplay has entrapped a director of comparable stature, one Clint Eastwood. That combination–under Ron Howard’s Imagine banner no less–is sure to guarantee awards attention come Oscar season 2011.
EW reports that the distributing studio is still to be determined, but if Eastwood comes aboard then Warner Bros.–his directorial home of the last four decades–seems the likeliest candidate. Up next for the prolific Eastwood is Hereafter, the supernatural drama starring Matt Damon and Bryce Dallas Howard, slated for a December 2010 release.

Eastwood certainly can direct good movies, but for me a lot will depend on who they cast as Hoover as to whether it will be a success or not. Philip Seymour Hoffman springs instantly to mind although Bob Gunton wouldn’t be a bad choice either.

'Earnest' Eastwood's been boring us with one
by-the-book PC snuff film after another –for years!
Dredging up the done-to-death, Boomer era Hoover
legacy with the puddle-deep DiCaprio only continues
this timid 'daring' pattern.
MEANWHILE, having made BILLIONS upon BILLIONS
unflinchingly catering to the franchise slum denial
needs of history's –MOST– awesomely genocidal
regime -bar none! —ACROSS the Pacific
—Hollywood, with the long rich Eastwood certainly
included, manages to, once again 'mysteriously overlook'
the 60th Anniversary of the astoundingly relevant
—indeed, STILL unfolding —KOREAN WAR.
