Yesterday, we reported that The Wachowski Siblings and Tom Tykwer‘s Cloud Atlas would be part of this year’s excellent line-up for the Toronto International Film Festival.  We had seen some concept art of Seoul in the year 2144 and behind-the-scenes photos, but now we have the first look at stars Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Ben Whishaw, and Jim Broadbent as a few of the multiple characters they’ll play in the movie.  The ambitious project, which also includes Hugh Grant, Hugo Weaving, James D’Arcy, Jim Sturgess, and Susan Sarandon, spans multiple eras with the cast playing different characters in each era.  For example, Berry said she’s playing a Jewish woman in the 1930s and an old tribal woman, and Grant revealed he’s playing six “incredibly evil” characters.

Hit the jump to check out the images and to learn more about the film.  The 2012 Toronto Film Festival runs from September 6 – 16th.  Cloud Atlas opens October 26th. [Update: Check out 20 new images after the jump.]

This image is from “a darkly comic yarn about a composer (Broadbent) and his apprentice (Whishaw).”

Here’s the synopsis for the novel:

A reluctant voyager crossing the Pacific in 1850; a disinherited composer blagging a precarious livelihood in between-the-wars Belgium; a high-minded journalist in Governor Reagan’s California; a vanity publisher fleeing his gangland creditors; a genetically modified “dinery server” on death-row; and Zachry, a young Pacific Islander witnessing the nightfall of science and civilisation — the narrators of Cloud Atlas hear each other’s echoes down the corridor of history, and their destinies are changed in ways great and small.

In his captivating third novel, David Mitchell erases the boundaries of language, genre and time to offer a meditation on humanity’s dangerous will to power, and where it may lead us.

Crapfest. And Tom Hanks seems a refugee from the Castaway set…

    • Frank

Wow. A ‘Crapfest’ based on two pictures? Your powers of deduction clearly know no bounds. Or perhaps you’re just a witless troll.

      • Tim25

        Couldn’t agree more with Frank.

    • Northern Star

How in heaven’s name can you dub this a “crapfest” when you haven’t seen any actual footage, less the whole film, get a grip dude!? This is an undeniably exciting project that however it turns out will be at the very least an intelligent and epic affair, not to mention visually spectacular. The Wachowski siblings are highly talented filmmakers and whatever you think of the ‘Matrix’ sequels (should have been a single, tight 170 minute film rather than two padded-out ones) or ‘Speed Racer’, it will be extremely interesting to see how ‘Cloud Atlas’ turns out and how it is received…

      • Norm

I think whatever point you were trying to make by scolding him for jumping to conclusions was lost the moment you started jumping to conclusions yourself. He thinks it will be crap, you think it will be “epic, visually stunning, etc.”… both are judgement calls based on a few scant pictures.

    • Alex

Dr. Zoiberg. Sorry but you tell nothing but bullshit. I’ve seen the movie twice and trust me it is veeeery far from any meening of crap

Looking forward to this! Anything unconventional coming out of Hollywood is a good thing, and the Wachowski’s are anything but unconventional.

    • rocky

Think you meant “anything but conventional” :)

I bet that’sHank portraying Adam Ewing from the very first part of the book.

Really loking forward to this, really enjoyed the book and I’m glad someone’s willing to take some risks. Now let’s see if all the whiners always complaining about lack of originality will put their money where their mouths are and pay and support something different….I doubt it

Yes, I did mean “conventional”. Thanks, guys!

  • Dobby

And here come the haters… Without knowing a single thing about the movie?

So what exactly have each have you done with your lives that makes it ok for you you dismiss others who are at least trying?

Wow this looks like a huge pile of crap, on the scale of WATERWORLD.

    • ari

      AMEN.

    • Carmichael

      High Praise!

    • Ramone

Where’s YOUR big budget movie, hmm?

    • Victor

This hatred for anything that looks remotely new and unfamiliar is exactly why Hollywood has this huge decline in creativity. Why take the risk and try new ideas when some douche is just going to sneer and turn up his nose at it before the first teaser trailer is even out.

  • A

I’ll give em props tho at least its not a REBOOT!!!!

  • Bob

So can anybody tell me what this movie is exactly about??

    • Rev. Slappy

It’s 6 separate stories in 6 different time periods but the stories have overlapping characters and themes. The cast plays multiple roles and appear in all 6.

  • sense 11

They won my allegiance for life with the Matrix trilogy so i will watch anything they make

    • Get Em

      Then came speed racer

      • DS

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.. but really, complaining about Speed Racer? who cares?

    • spidey2099

yes, and then they contributed to nothing but a pile of turd called Speed Racer and some other dud that actually looked promising, and then when it came out, was quite average at best. How about they stick to making what could possibly turn out to be decent/good and make another matrix trilogy, because eventually it will happen anyway, so why not make it whilst they’re (and everyone else) is still under the age of 90.

  • Strong Enough

    looks like crap.

  • zillabeast

I gotta admit I laughed when I saw Hanks in that fabric cloth and dirt all over him. He looks like a regular citizen of Zion.

Still, I look forward to this big time.

Who’s the futuristic goblin? Weaving or Grant? Or someone else?

    • Alex

      Demon is Weaving

  • spidey2099

Some financial backers to this movie will call this a ‘magical journey’ but I reckon it is more likely to be absolute shite.

  • Alex

Guys, why are you talking about W bro and sista only. It is a movie from Tykwer and Wachowskis. Tom delivered much better films then Matrix in the past. Open you minds and watch european films sometimes
