Extended Trailer, Directors’ Commentary, and Poster for Tom Tykwer and The Wachowskis’ CLOUD ATLAS

     July 26, 2012

Warner Bros. has released a six-minute trailer for Cloud Atlas along with a director’s commentary video and a poster.  The ambitious movie is based off David Mitchell‘s novel of the same name, and tracks how the lives of multiple characters intertwine across multiple eras.  Yesterday, we showed you the first images from Cloud Atlas, but they’re nothing compared to what this trailer shows in terms of the film’s scope and visuals.  Of course, no one expected directors Andy Wachowski, Lana Wachowski (The Matrix Trilogy), and Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run) to go small, but it looks like they’ve made something that’s truly a sight to behold.  My only concern is with how the dialogue will be executed.  If it’s done in narration, then it will probably be okay, but if it’s conversation, then we might want to prepare for the “Let me read you a philosophy textbook” dialogue from The Matrix Reloaded.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer, directors’ commentary, and poster.  The directors’ commentary explains the difficulty in getting the film made and why they chose to make an extended trailer. It’s also noteworthy since the Wachowskis never comment on their movies.  The film stars Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Doona Bae, Ben Whishaw, James D’Arcy, Xun Zhou, Keith David, David Gyasi, Susan Sarandon, and Hugh GrantCloud Atlas will play at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, and open on October 26th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Cloud Atlas:

“Cloud Atlas” explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future. Action, mystery and romance weave dramatically through the story as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future.

Well, that lasted six minutes. Try again, Mr. Goldberg.

How ’bout a magic trick … Tadah! It’s gone!

the movie, just accordingly to the preview, looks like a stunningly beautiful mess. I can’t see myself NOT buying a ticket just to see it, but still unsure of whether the execution will be able to match the story and the visuals.

    What the shit just happened

  • tarek

What a boring movie! It’s like watching a bad Woody Allen movie. …and this horrible music!

    • Chase

      “Hurr durr, I’m ignorant!”

      • tarek

Of Course. And you are the genius of the play, right ? ^^

    • Roland

Yeah it looks increeedibly superficial. Also, you know it’s a bad sign when almost nothing in the trailer resembles the book. The book was at least subtle. This, on the other hand…

  • Sam

The Matrix sequels were a terrible mess but The Matrix and Speed Racer both had innovative visual styles.

I think this looks stunning but I admittedly have never read the book and wouldn’t be able to tell you how it all works together and succeeds as a movie. So I don’t have much to go on but from this trailer I DEFINITELY will be going to see this movie.

  • JackofSpades

    I think it looks awesome.

  • elikias

If they pull off what they were trying to do with this movie, it’s going to be a masterpiece. If they fall even a little short, it will be a horrible mess.

  • Gui

What a surprise, Matt Goldberg can still find negative things to say about ambitious films. Why don’t you just stop reporting? You annoy more people than you please.

  • Jay

I got sick of this movie about 4.5 min into this trailer. Tom Hanks phoned this one in – he’s not even trying to be a character, or to say his lines with heart or intensity – he simply plays Tom Hanks on set in various costumes.

  • fefe

godawful, and it’s going to smarm you with its morals. at least waterworld had the smarts not to

    • TheHOYT

God forbid that a piece of art tries to teach an audience something like morality! The horror!

  • The Dude

Great trailer, although after some failures from the Wachowskis’ it looks as if they may of finally rekindled a little bit of their “Matrix” fire. Plus you have a pretty nice cast fronted by non other then the great Tom Hanks. It would be nice to see him in a good movie again after the “Larry Crowne” and “Extremely Loud” bombs.

  • Steve

    (Obligatory trolling comment inserted here)

Sorry that’s the best I got, Internet. I can do a better job if you show me less awesome-ness.

  • Lob Taylor

I initally thought the premise of this flick was awesome and with an impressive ensemble cast and production crew they couldnt go wrong. The trailer was truly awesome!!!
I for one cant wait to see this movie! ;)

  • anthony

    Goldberg = pretentious prick

    • Alan

“If it’s done in narration, then it will probably be okay, but if it’s conversation, then we might want to prepare for the “Let me read you a philosophy textbook” dialogue from The Matrix Reloaded.”

Let me guess: the film will feature dialogue, Goldberg will be pissed that it isn’t HIS idea of what the film should be (even though he hasn’t read the book or – you know – a book), and then will give the film a piss-taking review because they didn’t follow his ideas. Goldberg doesn’t review films: he has a pre-conceived idea of what a film should be, and then imposes that idea on the the filmmakers, attacking them for not following the greatness of his concepts.

  • Fiz

I’m with Jay. I couldn’t even finish watching it. Pretty, but as far as trailers go, pretty boring. Hopefully the complete product is more interesting.

  • phil

Lana? LOL Make a movie about that loser

  • Warpcrafter

Larry Wachowski looks about less like someone who went through what the medical profession laughingly refers to as “gender reassignment” and more like an ugly sitcom actor in drag.

    • Yoren

As long as she is happy does it really matter what she looks like?

    • Polarboy

You should probably consider gender reassignment yourself, then at least you’d be able to say you have touched a woman.

  • xyz

Whoa! A lot of people have been carelessly tossing the word epic around lately, but this one truly looks epic. Tantamount. Extremely ambitious. Like Matrix it will probably be equally awesome and pretentious. Makes me want to read the book (or half of it).

  • Stephen

Andy Wachowski kinda sounds like Seth Rogen.

  • sorefoot

The trailer looks interesting. It could be a mess or it could be great. Although I didn’t like the Matrix sequels OR Speed Racer, I will give this a chance. I don’t know how anyone could even guess how good this will be from the trailer. Academy Aware or Bomb of the Year? Who knows?

  • DS

Kind of reminds me of a souped up version of the Fountain. It does look like a mess, but I guess thats why they needed a 5 minute trailer.. Hopefully the movie will flow, not be too choppy.

  • thxmatt

If anyone wants to promote a movie let this “guy” write an articleaboutf it. There you go Matt, your puberty driven wet dreams have become reality.

  • LV426

This looks like the cinematic equivalent of a clusterf*ck. I hope I’m wrong…

  • DE

agreed – could be a marvel or a pile of poo and yes, Fountainesque appears to be right (and that was basically a pile of poo, albeit an oddly fragrant one).

  • Mrlee1969

These past, future, time connection movies have always been intriguing, but super boring. Robin Williams tried it, Hugh Jackman tried it, and if you do your research correctly, you have tried it. You are boring, so please dont write a story about how you live forever in reincarnation. Your not that special.

  • Mars

Run, Lola, Run is a great film, but Tykwer is hit or miss. Oddly enough, Lana’s hair kinda looks like Lola’s. That Tom Hanks voiceover kind of made me cringe, but I like the Wachowski siblings so it’s nice to get anything new from them, especially with the over-saturation of all the cookie-cutter superhero films that everyone claims are “Great popcorn fun!”

  • Tony Bada-Bing

This looks like a very good movie. It has interesting visuals, looks like it has action, drama and (from what was shown) a little bit of comedy. Another thing, I like ensemble movies with multiple characters and story lines; so I’m definitely interested in this one.

Also folks, about the double posting- my bad.

  • sense 11

    Looks amazing

  • daveyboy

I think what i will do is buy a ticket to a different movie i have already seen and watch that and then find out when the future scenes are in the movie and sneak in for just those parts… I dont know it just looks too epic for its own good…for the record though,Speed Racer kicked ass. IMO.

  • daveyboy

Also, i wonder what the run time for that movie could be? It looks like it would be four hours long…that preview was forever and it didn’t even feel like the told you a lot of the story!

  • wacko3205

I’m hooked from start to finish for this one.

Oh God… just the directors are steering me away from this.

  • Richard of Norway

So THAT’s what Larry/Lana looks like as a woman. Not bad. Good for him/her.

Oh, and I am DEFINITELY going to be seeing this opening weekend. If it makes it to Norway!

    • Richard of Norway

Shit. I just checked and it’s not coming to Norway until 22 February 2013. WTF?!

Matrix and Speed Racer are favorites so this has my attention for sure. Love the scope of it. Few movies try it and fewer succeed at making it feel vital and connected. Thing is each of those stories felt like there could be a solid movie behind it, so that makes me hopeful.

  • solgazer

Off topic slightly but Lana looks amazing! The Wachowskis seem so much more present and look happier. Really stoked for her. As for the movie? Can. Not. Wait.
Hoping for a movie of Fountainesque depth and scope but with that distinctly Twyker and Wachowski feel. And even if the film doesn’t work I seriously hope it does well just so the studios want to put more money towards courageous film making on this kind of scale.
Bravo to all those involved for giving it a shot.
