I love Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and I have high expectations for the upcoming sequel, Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers. Details on the film have been scarce, but now EW is reporting that the plot revolves around Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader) and Sam Sparks (Anna Faris) returning to Swallow Falls to clean up the mess created by the FLDSMDFR only to find that food is now taking on the form of mutant beasts. “Magically, every creature is a combination of a food item and an animal that results in just a cringeworthy pun,” says producer Kirk Bodyfelt. As a fan of cringeworthy puns, this makes me even more excited for the flick.
Hit the jump for more. Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers opens in 3D on February 7, 2014.
Here’s a brief synopsis for the film, per EW:
Live Corp has been charged with cleaning up the island after Flint’s contraption that turned water into food led to a mess of huge pancakes, pizza slices and, of course, meatballs garnishing the pulverized town in the original film. But in the sequel, the machine is still sputtering away somewhere — only now it’s pumping out living pickles, a walking, gibberish-talking strawberry named Barry, and creatures like the giant, french-fry-legged bacon cheesespider, which lords over the abandon town like a massive cholesterol-spiking tarantula.
We kind of saw monster-food when the gummi bears attacked the flying car at the end of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, but they were no match for Flint’s talking monkey, Steve (Neil Patrick Harris). However, Steve may be no match for new character, Barb (Kristen Schaal). “Barb is the super-Steve,” Bodyfelt explains. “She’s an orangutan with a human brain inside her monkey brain — like a turducken.” Who wants to start taking bets on a “Why cookie rocket?” reference?
Schaal isn’t the only new addition to the cast. She’ll be joined Terry Crews, who takes over the role of the tough-talking local cop Earl, after Mr. T decided not to return. I’m curious to see if Crews will be doing a Mr. T impression or take the character in a different direction. Hader and Faris will return alongside James Caan (Flint’s father), Andy Samberg (Baby Brent), Benjamin Bratt (cameraman/pilot Manny), and Will Forte. Forte previously voiced the small supporting role of Joe Towne, but now he’ll get to voice a larger character in the sequel. Forte will lend his voice to “Chester V (That’s V like the letter, not the Roman numeral for ‘5.’) V is a world-famous super-inventor who commands Barb.”
Cody Cameron (story artist on the original Cloudy) and Kris Pearn (head of story on the first Cloudy) will be taking over the directing reigns from Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who will serve as executive producers. Horrible Bosses scribes John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein penned the script.
