FROSTY: I have a few questions for you. How does casting a film really work? Does Vivid tell you, or does somebody tell you who’s going to be in the film? Or do you specifically go after certain performers?
PAUL THOMAS: No, no. Casting is up to me. We have our ten-twelve Vivid contract girls at any time. And each one of the films has a contract girl signed to the film. I tried somewhat to gear the film to the Vivid girl and the girl’s abilities. Often times I don’t know who it’s going to be and schedules change and girls change. So I’m often times trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. But, I mean, I’ll be making a film for a twenty year old Vivid girl and all of a sudden she has to go on a road trip and I get a thirty-five year old Vivid girl.
I cast a film with very little dialogue because I think I’m going to have a Vivid girl with not much acting experience and then I’ll get someone like Savanna and it’s wasted. But I try to gear the film to the girls. But beyond the Vivid girl, the casting is up to me. I’m all for trying new people all the time. Try new people as much as I can, and yet I often let Shylar my assistant and the agents cast the movie.
Is there anything we haven’t covered or that you feel passionate about the adult film industry?
Just where we began this interview. The most interesting part of sexuality is getting to know the people just enough to be invested in them. You can do that through script. You can do that through interviews. You don’t even have to have words at all. You can just follow the people around. But it’s the setup of the sexual situation. It’s seeing the people in public a bit to get a sense of who they are. And the best directors are important and know how to do it.
Special thanks to Paul Thomas. Look for a full review of To Die For very soon... and of course more pictures.
