No End in Sight: The Very Best of Foreigner - CD Review

The only group I can think of that has more ‘greatest hits’ collections than Foreigner is KISS.  That said, the latest collection, issued by Rhino, No End in Sight: The Very Best of Foreigner, is now the best on the market, by a country mile.

This 32-song collection, all tracks freshly remastered, spans the group’s entire history and catalogue, beginning in the late 70s, taking us all the way to 2008 with the inclusion of the new track, Too Late, featuring the standout vocals of Kelly Hansen, former singer of ‘hair metal’ band, Hurricane.  Replacing Lou Gramm is a tall order, and I’m happy to say that Hansen is a worthy successor, proudly carrying on the torch for one of album oriented rock’s (AOR) premiere bands.

In addition to all the hits you would expect to find (Hot Blooded, Cold As Ice, Waiting For a Girl Like You, Double Vision, Feels Like The First Time, Urgent, et al.), the two-disc collection also includes a few previously released live tracks, as well as a previously unreleased live version of Say You Will.

I give founding member and band leader/guitarist Mick Jones a lot of credit for keeping the group going with a lineup that doesn’t even remotely resemble the personnel from the 70s and 80s, and recording fresh material with a new singer who must fill the enormous shoes of a living legend.  If Journey can do it, why not Foreigner?  With a touring lineup that includes vocalist Kelly Hansen (former Hurricane), Jason Bonham (former Bonham), and Jeff Pilson (former Dokken), you could almost consider Foreigner 2008 to be an 80s hair metal super group – minus a lot of the makeup, hairspray and spandex.  Having seen this current lineup live, Hansen does the Foreigner catalogue justice, and if Too Late is any indication of what’s to come, I cannot wait to hear a full album of new material from this lineup.  Until then, No End in Sight: The Very Best of Foreigner is a solid greatest hits collection that should keep the classic songs rockin’ your stereo until a new album arrives.
