Last month, we reported that director Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class) was set to adapt Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons‘ comic The Secret Service.  The story is about a veteran secret agent who takes his ruffian nephew from the streets of London and into a British spy school that molds its students into suave 007-types.  According to Heat Vision, Colin Firth is being courted for the role of the uncle.  Vaughn was looking to reteam with his Kick-Ass star Aaron Taylor-Johnson for the role of the nephew, but the actor was unavailable due to a scheduling conflict.

Hit the jump for more.  Firth will next be seen in Atom Egoyan‘s West Memphis Three drama, Devil’s KnotThe Secret Service is set for release on November 14, 2014.

Heat Vision reports that the comic book was made with a Hollywood adaptation in mind, and Vaughn was involved in crafting the story.  That gives me more confidence in the project, and I was already hopeful for the film since Vaughn had already been able to take Millar’s terrible writing and turn it into a good movie with Kick-Ass.  Heat Vision also reports, “the comic also featured cameos from such real life personages as Mark Hamill and Ridley Scott (connected to the machinations of the villain). It is unclear at this time if they will appear in the movie.”  A trip to my local comic book shop may be in order even though Millar’s writing makes me cringe (it’s juvenile but labors under the pretense of being edgy; his only good book is Superman: Red Son, which is definitely worth picking up).

As for the casting of Firth, I’m excited for it.  Vaughn says the concept is “James Bond meets My Fair Lady,” so it sounds like the director is returning to the action-comedy genre, so Firth should be a good fit.  It will also be a nice change of pace for the actor, who hasn’t really done anything action-related since The Last Legion.

lol this sounds like stormbreaker meets cody banks but with kick ass graphicness. i guess it could be interesting…but i’ll have my doubts until i see some pics and a trailer. just get a good actor for the kid, i’d prefer they got a kid who wasn’t some skater kid with a surfer mophead who has to be groomed into a secret agent…it should be a darker already disturbed kid that is able to jump right into the position.

Matt Goldberg is calling someone else out for being “juvenile”? Wow, just wow … I actually agree that ‘Superman: Red Son’ is the best thing that Millar has written, but the idea that Goldberg – a guy that dressed up as a zombie for a film he later reviewed – is calling ANYONE ELSE juvenile is insulting. Moreover, a semi-decent film writer would have noted that Matthew Vaughn considered Colin Firth for the role of Shaw in ‘X-Men: First Class’. As Vaughn says, “so I said [to the studio] if you’re willing to go with a European actor, I want Firth – and if it has to be American, I want Bacon because I think both those guys are such great actors.” Then again, “semi-decent” might be too difficult a standard for someone of Goldberg’s intellect.
