Collider Goes to the Set of IRON MAN 2 – Read a Preview – Plus Pictures of the IM2 Challenge Coin

iron_man_movie_image__11_.jpgThe camera is slowly zooming in on Robert Downey Jr.’s face. He’s trying to figure something out as he looks at a lot of small objects sitting on a long white table. He says a line, the camera then pulls back to reveal more objects in the frame. As I watch take after take, I’m smiling ear to ear.

Once again, I’m on the set of an “Iron Man” movie. Except, unlike the first film – which no one expected to be a massive worldwide hit – the sequel has a lot of expectations and with good reason. The first “Iron Man” movie was loved by both critics and fans, and the sequel is one of the big summer 2010 movies.

Thankfully, when I was on set yesterday, everything I saw and heard from the filmmakers and cast leads me to believe this film will be better than the first. Everyone said it’s all about the characters. No one was trying to tell us about the huge CGI action scenes and that’s why everyone will love this movie. Instead, they’re taking what worked in the first film and they’re going to use a similar blueprint for the second.

But a sequel can’t just recycle the same things…they need to add new players to mix it up. So Jon Favreau brought in Sam Rockwell, Scarlett Johansson, and Mickey Rourke. However, since this is a preview…even if I learned what characters they play, I can’t write about it.

What I can say is…after the jump.

robert_downey_jr_iron_man_movie_image_gwyneth_paltrow.jpgI was on set today for many hours and got to see some cool stuff. While I have to be vague for now, I was in Tony Stark’s basement and he’s definitely building some new toys. I also got to see some of the Iron Man suits up close and maybe I even saw a new one…

Of course no set visit would be complete without interviews, so while there I was able to participate in interviews with Robert Downey Jr., Jon Favreau, and Kevin Feige – the President of Production at Marvel Studios. While I’m going to be under embargo for a little while, I’ll be able to post a summary of what Kevin said very soon. He gave us updates on all the other films in production and the future of Marvel movies.

Overall, if you were nervous that “Iron Man 2″ wouldn’t deliver the goods, you don’t have to worry, as the franchise is still in great hands. Also, both Robert and Jon couldn’t have been nicer with the press on set today, and they both said all the right things. While I was excited beforehand, I left set absolutely sure that “Iron Man 2″ is going to kick a ton of ass.

Finally, if you’re a fan of “Iron Man”, I strongly suggest attending this summer’s Comic-Con in San Diego. It’s a very safe bet Jon Favreau is bringing something to show us….and I cannot wait.

Look for my full set report when the embargo lifts. And a big thank you to everyone at Marvel and Paramount for the invite.

And one last thing…Jon Favreau gave us a really cool “Iron Man” collector’s item.

For the shoot, Jon created some military inspired challenge coins. Jon learned about the coins while shooting at Edwards Air Force Base and he decided to create some to hand out to the various crew and military that will be working on the film. While I have no idea how rare these things will end up being…here’s what they look like. Without a doubt, this is the coolest thing I’ve ever been given on a set.

Notice the back side has a S.H.I.E.L.D. logo…I wonder what that means…

First of all, I love that you appreciate how cool it was to go on that set visit and that makes me excited for you.

Also, even though you couldn't say much, I'm pleased that you got such a good vibe from everyone. I love that they all seem to care so much for these characters and are determined to make the sequel even better than the first.

When I went to see Iron Man last year, I knew nothing about it. I expected to enjoy it, but I didn't know that it would be the most enjoyable movie going experience of my summer. So much, that I ended up going to see it multiple times. I've always loved movies, but Iron Man sort of breathed new life into that love.

Anyway, this comment is long and rambling. Basically, I don't recall ever being this excited about a movie in my life. Next year cannot come fast enough.

As always, thanks for the article! :)

With super hero movies in danger of becoming darker, more hyper-violent and dystopian, it was great to see IM breathe colour, wit and charm back into the cinema. If they can transplant a third of that film's charisma into this sequel, I'm starting to queue now.

EK – what it DID do though was make me like the characters (which Spiderman did well in 1 & 2) and not use absurd CG in favor of realistic effects. Spiderman has crappy CG and 3 sucked bad… and Superman has crappy everything. The only other movie that felt similar was Incredible Hulk, where I wasn't dry heaving to the CG and I really dug the characters. I hope this is a trend of good super hero movies.

    charles,

you can't expect lightheartedness in every page to screen adaptation. you can't make batman movie the way you make a spiderman movie. different worlds with different characters all with different motivations. i can tell you that tony stark has a lot of darkness behind his character, including alcholism that was only hinted at in the first film. and if these movies go down the road of the "civil war" series, iron man is the enemy.

Iron Man was good, no doubt about it but it could have been great. Obadian Stane was a cliched villain without any depth, Tony Stark while a genius when it comes to making a super suit was an idiot when it came to everything else and the ending of Iron Man is possibly the worst ending I have ever seen in film history. Iron Man 2 has a lot to do to convince me Iron Man 1 wasn't just a waste of time. Iron Man 2 needs to have multiple villains with depth, it needs to have Stark acting like a smart responsible adult, and it needs to explain in an intelligent manner the ending of Iron Man 1 without such an ending appearing to have just been created as a meaningless gimmick.

    • Django @

Yeah – because Khan (Trek2) was such a 3 dimensional villain.

I think the best villains are actually quite 2 – dimensional. Even the bad guy in No Country for Old Men was pretty 1 dimensionally evil.

Save Alfred Molina's Doc Ock, many of the best villains are opportunities for actors to go outlandishly one dimensional, for once.

The problem was not that Stane wasn't multifaceted – its that he wasn't outlandish ENOUGH.

This is going to be a very hard sell as the best definitive comic book run of Iron Man written by David Micheline comes squarely on the side of Tony Stark keeping his true identity a secret. In fact, for most of the Iron Man comic book run Stark has kept his true identity a secret. The whole idea of a superhero not having a secret identity is a new concept in comics barely a decade old introduced by weak writers as a meaningless marketing gimmick with no substance that frankly thus far has not worked at all in comics and is generally viewed by everyone negatively.

In case you didn't realize this, directors are artists too. As artists they are granted artistic license when adapting established characters to the screen. (Just the same as when a new artist or writer takes over a comic book series.) Favreau's concept of Tony Stark is fitting for not only the times but the screen and actor playing him. The end of IM1 is great, Stark revealing his identity to gain cred is simply playing to his characteristic vanity. Its not being irresponsible or not being adult, its just a different perspective than Superman or Spider-man can afford considering their loved one need to be protected. Who does Stark need to protect by hiding his ID? Pepper? I think its safe to say her character does quite better being tossed into the fray than someone like Aunt May. Besides this is quite on par w/ the comic book version of Iron Man; see Civil War.

I need to see Stark give a reason for why unmasking was the right smart thing to do and not the most irresponsible thing he has ever done. Favreau needs to convince me the ending of Iron Man is the ultimate heroic adult act Stark has ever done. If Favreau cannot do this then Iron Man 2 will likely completely fail. Batman Begins and The Dark Knight made the ultimate case for why Batman having a secret identity is the greatest smartest heroic act Bruce Wayne can do to protect Gotham City. I can already see that Iron Man 1's ending will have massive negative repercussions in Iron Man 2 that will have me thinking Stark may not only be irresponsible but completely insane. Favreau needs to address this at the very beginning of Iron Man 1.

Except have character banter be mature, engaging, sexy, and adult.

The tension btw. Downey & Paltrow was so thick you didn't have to like superheroes to like the movie. And he doesn't ahve super powers. He's just one driven, extremely flawed and witty dude.

Superman, Spider Man? Possess none of these traits to the degree that Downey did.

Face it. Before IM the movie? Tony Stark was just a Geraldo & Hasselhoff wanna-be. These guys reinvented his character from the ground up. Downey had 4-5 possibilities of improv for every line he spoke.

Chris Reeve? Tobey McGuire? Y'all kin suck it!
