Well guys it’s Monday which means it’s time for our weekend box office report brought to you by our friends at AMC Theatres. Coming in at #1 for the second week in a row is the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton bringing in $26.7 million dropping 55% from its 1st week which is respectable considering there were 3 new wide release films this week. Coming in at #2 is Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation making 11.7 million dropping only 31% in its 3rd week bringing its domestic total up to $157 million. In third spot is the horror sequel Sinister 2 making $10.6 million, exceeding its modest $10 million dollar production budget. In the #4 spot is Hitman: Agent 47 only making $8.2 million on its opening weekend. Rounding out the top 5 is The Man from U.N.C.L.E. bringing in $7.4 million on its second weekend dropping just 41% from last week.
In the last few days 3 major films of 2016 have wrapped principal photography. Captain America: Civil War, X-Men: Apocalypse and Independence Day 2 all completed their principle shooting and now head to post production.
BUY OR SELL
Actor Vin Diesel is no stranger to returning to former roles that he found success with and now according to an instagram post he put up, he’s getting ready to do it again. As first reported on Collider.com, Diesel has announced that he is returning to the roles of Xander Cage for xXx3 which will begin production in December in the Philippines. Diesel did not appear in xXx 2: State of Union in which Ice Cube took on the lead role also claiming that Diesel’s character Cage had been killed in action.
Terminator Genisys may have bombed at the North American box office, making just under $90 million dollars domestically, but even though it looked like any sequel possibilities had died, the international box office may just save it. According to reports Genisys just opened in China making over $27 million in its first day, bringing its world wide box office total up to a respectable $353 million dollars. This makes the 5th Terminator film a profitable one for the studio and has raised the issue if a sequel to the new film could still be in the cards.
As many of you know, the upcoming Warner Bros/DC film Suicide Squad hits theatres after Batman v Superman in 2016 and will feature the appearance of a certain Dark Knight from Gotham in it. There are also rumors that Aquaman may make a short appearance in the film as well. With Amanda Waller mentioning Superman by name in the Suicide Squad trailer, many have speculated that the Man of Steel may appear in the film as well. Superman actor Henry Cavill was recently asked about a possible appearance in Suicide Squad to which he said that he doesn’t appear in the film at all.
MAIL BAG
Sam writes: Hey Collider! My question is regarding Marvel’s choice of casting of Tom Holland as Spiderman. I mean nothing against the guy but I looked at his films and not one of them rang a bell. At this point I do trust Marvel with everything they do but I was still surprised when I heard this. How does this casting decision come across you guys?
Darshan Patel writes: My question is regarding possible movies made about hip-hop/rap artists after the success of Straight Outta Compton. There are already rumours of a movie about Tupac and Snoop Dogg. Do you think that this is a good idea ? Can these types of movies be a thing for couple of years if done right like S.O.C? If so whose movie would you like to see ? For me its would be about the feud East coast (biggie) vs West Coast (Tupac).
Sam Isreal writes: Hey guys! My question concerns the credit giving of movies. Why does the director usually receive more credit than the actors themselves. For example when a film says “a Steven Spielberg film”. I mean sure the director has a huge roll in the making of the film but isn't it the actors who really make the film come to life?
