This week on The Collision, we take a look at time travel movies.  We explore the appeal of keeping the status quo, changing the future, changing the past, and the importance of closing plot holes versus telling a powerful story.  This is all to lead into our discussion of Rian Johnson‘s Looper.  As always, we’ll close out with our recommendations

    Dave here (Future Dave. I know what you’re about to ask and, yes, there’s a shortage of chairs),

    Wanted to weigh in on LOOPER:
    - If sensors exist in the future that let authorities know when a person dies, wouldn’t they be alerted to the fact that a person disa-frickin-ppears?
    – Loved the telekinesis in the film more than the time-travel aspect of it. There are a few unanswered questions of conservation of matter that Johnson dances around. There’s a cursory expoloration of multiple timelines that does all right. Unfortunately, LOOPER doesn’t give us much opportunity to get into a tautological discussion about time travel over a few beers on a Friday night.
    - The sci-fi aspect of LOOPER just about disappears within the beautifully developing relationships between the characters.
    - JGL is brilliant as usual, Blunt shines and Willis goes in a direction you might not expect (but McClane DOES finally get his aspirin!)
    - As to “Why not drop the target into the ocean/volcano?” I’m assuming that the time machine drops the person in the same place, just thirty years in the past. In other words, if you built the time machine over a volcano in the future, it’d drop targets into the empty space above a volcano in the past, assuming nothing else was in the way.

    As for my recommendation, check out the 1962 short film, La Jetee, by writer/director Chris Marker. Constructed almost entirely from still photos and filmed in black and white, it tells the story of a post-nuclear war experiment in time travel. La Jetee forms the inspirational basis for many contemporary time travel films, specifically 12 MONKEYS.
