TRUE BLOOD Recap: “Lost Cause”

“Lost Cause” finally gave True Blood fans what we’ve been wanting for years from this show, but most particularly, were hoping to get from this season.  After the promise of a return to the calmer side of things, True Blood did almost anything but that in its first few episodes back.  And even in those few moments when it did slow down, it went all wrong: extended time spent with characters we didn’t know was dull, while favorites were killed off unceremoniously and without much comment.  “Lost Cause” did a lot to right that, making it one of the best episodes the show has had in a very long time.

THE STRAIN Recap: “The Box”

In its second episode, The Strain focused more on the idea of transformation, including its own (potentially).  “The Box” spent more time on the vampire side of things, and also set the stage for the upcoming season in terms of focus.  It also allowed for a little more discovery into this vampiric contagion, and the many forms it takes.  Hit the jump for why “a good story always trumps the truth.”

MASTERS OF SEX Recap: “Kyrie Eleison”

After an emotional premiere, Masters of Sex slowed things way down in “Kyrie Eleison” (meaning “Lord Have Mercy”).  But, it maintained its focus on place (as in, position).  Each of its characters is adrift, longing for something they have lost or cannot achieve.  “Kyrie Eleison” also separated Bill and Ginny again, but as with all things Masters, the study must go on, and their connection to it drives them back together.  It also is the only place the two feel at home.  Hit the jump for more.

While not every project in Hollywood actually comes to fruition, despite the years of development put into it, there are a few projects that Vin Diesel has been attached to for some time that he remains focused on getting made.  It may have taken nine years, but the Chronicles of Riddick follow-up Riddick finally came to pass last year, and now Diesel says he’s tackling two long-talked-about projects in the near future.  Steve recently spoke with Diesel in anticipation of the release of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, in which he voices Groot, and the actor revealed his next three projects.  After the fantasy-actioner The Last Witch Hunter, which Diesel is making next, the actor says he will move on to Kojak, followed by xXx 3.

Hit the jump for more, including news on the addition of Michael Caine to The Last Witch Hunter and a status update on the long-developing Hannibal.

TCA Awards Winners: BREAKING BAD Named Program of the Year; TRUE DETECTIVE, VEEP, and THE GOOD WIFE Win Top Honors

Though the Primetime Emmy Awards are the TV honors that everyone’s familiar with, when it comes to clout, the Television Critics Association Awards take the cake.  Voted on by over 200 professional journalists, the TCA Awards honor the very best in television regardless of which networks can afford the most expensive campaigns, and so the list of 2014 winners comes with a considerable degree of weight.  Breaking Bad took the “Program of the Year” title for the second year in a row, while the Outstanding Achievement in Drama award went to CBS’ critical favorite The Good Wife.  The Best Comedy award resulted in a tie between the blissfully explicit Veep and FX’s wholly unique Louie, while True Detective won both Best Miniseries and Individual Achievement in a Drama for Matthew McConaughey.  As for Best New Program, that honor went to Netflix’s swell Orange Is the New Black.

RAY DONOVAN Recap: “Uber Ray”

by     Posted 7 hours ago

In “Uber Ray,” Ran Donovan has set up its major conflicts for the upcoming season, and so far, it’s looking good.  The show is a slow burn, and one that didn’t get as much attention as its counterpart Masters of Sex, but deserved to.  It’s at least a steadily engaging show, if not completely tonally consistent, and its character drama is always interesting to watch unfold.  “Uber Ray” didn’t bother with a fixer plot this week, which was the right choice, focusing instead on Mickey’s return, and what that means for the Donovans.  Hit the jump for why “that’s why you were born, Ray, to be my fucking judge.  That’s always been your job.”

Jason Blum Strikes a 10-Year Multi-Platform Deal with Universal

The Purge: Anarchy didn’t manage to match The Purge’s $34.1 million start, but apparently Universal Pictures is pleased with the film’s $28.4 million haul because the studio chose today to announce that they’ve entered a 10-year first-look production deal with Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions that will also cover the NBCUniversal businesses, which includes the Universal Television and Universal Cable Productions divisions.

Blumhouse is responsible for a long list of micro-budget horror hits including the Paranormal Activity series and three others that are already under the Universal umbrella, The Purge and Insidious as well as Sinister, which is moving over from Summit to Focus Features.  The company looks to follow up that success with Ouija and the Jennifer Lopez-starrer, The Boy Next Door, next.  Hit the jump for more.

Geek Gifts: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY’s Rocket and Groot from Hot Toys and Sideshow Collectibles

Guardians of the Galaxy opens in two weeks and I’m hoping it’s going to be massive.  Based on the 17 minutes of footage I saw and my general love of writer/director James Gunn, I want nothing more for this film to do well (and for me to love it when I finally see it). I love all of the characters so far (I’ve never read the comics so I’m just going off of the movie here), especially the way Rocket and Groot kind of complete each other.  And now you can own them courtesy of Hot Toys and Sideshow Collectibles.  Each of these two characters has between 15 and 17 points of articulation and will include an additional interchangeable angry expression face and a pair of partially clenched angry palms for Groot.

Hit the jump for more images and a list of specifications for Hot Toys’ Rocket and Groot or click here to pre-order Rocket and Groot on Sideshow’s website.

TWIN PEAKS: THE ENTIRE MYSTERY Review; Cast Talks Being Part of the TWIN PEAKS Universe, Working with David Lynch, Props They Kept and More

Since it premiered on ABC in 1990, Twin Peaks has made an impression on everyone who’s seen it.  Whether it was life-long love or total confusion, the show sparked conversation then, and still does so, for everyone who has continued to discover it.  So, when I received an invitation to head over to Silver Lake’s Vista Theater for the premiere of Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery, which includes nearly 90 minutes of outtakes and deleted scenes from 1992′s prequel film, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, I jumped at the opportunity.

Before heading inside to check out the footage, I got to chat with some of the actors, including Ray Wise and Grace Zabriskie (who played Laura Palmer’s parents, Leland and Sarah), Catherine Coulson (The Log Lady), Mädchen Amick (Shelly Johnson), James Marshall (James Hurley), Miguel Ferrer (Albert Rosenfeld) and Mary Jo Deschanel (Eileen Hayward), who are all clearly still very appreciative of the time they spent in the Twin Peaks universe, working with the mastermind behind it all, David Lynch.  Check out what they had to say and read my thoughts on the footage after the jump.

Producer Andrew Kreisberg Talks ARROW, THE FLASH, the Crossover Episodes, How the Two Shows Differ From One Another, and More

by     Posted 14 hours ago

Viewers were introduced to Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) during Season 2 of the hit CW drama series Arrow, in a way that made the character both likeable and intriguing, and it was easy to see why he immediately got his own TV show.  With that drama series debuting on October 7th, he’ll get his own backstory and mythology and villains to fight, while also playing into the bigger DC universe and, at times, characters will cross back and forth between the two shows.

While at The CW portion of the TCA Press Tour, executive producer/writer Andrew Kreisberg, who is working on both Arrow and The Flash, spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about following a villain-of-the-week format while exploring the larger mythology and mythos, how the show will be lighter and funnier than Arrow, that they’re throwing every idea they have at this season while knowing there’s some stuff that they won’t be able to get to until a possible second season, the big two-part cross-over episode that will come in Episode 8 of both shows, just before the Episode 9 mid-season finale, what sort of discussions they have about which characters they can use in the DC universe on TV, as opposed to the films, and how cool it is to get Grant Gustin and John Wesley Shipp in the same scene.  Check out what he had to say after the jump, and be aware that there are some spoilers.

Has the STAR WARS EPISODE VII Story Been Revealed?

J.J. Abrams isn’t going to like this, as it appears that his mystery box has sprung a bit of a leak.  You may not like it either if you want to remain unspoiled on Star Wars: Episode VII news in general, because details regarding the film’s general plot have hit the net.  If these are true, it actually seems kind of a cool story to me.  But there are those that don’t want to know anything and I totally get it.

All I’ll say above the jump is that I hope Disney and Lucasfilm really make the best of the two week hiatus coming up in August to rework the film’s shooting schedule.  Because they’re going to need Harrison Ford.  And his leg.  Hit the jump for Star Wars Episode 7 story details.  And, in case you didn’t get the message in the first paragraph, spoilers below.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Reviews: Audience Reactions to Early Screenings Overwhelmingly Positive

by     Posted 17 hours ago

guardians-of-the-galaxy-reviews

Normally when we bring you audience reactions from early screenings of highly anticipated movies, we try to bring a balance of positive and negative responses in an attempt to paint an unbiased picture.  In the case of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, that proved more difficult than usual since reactions were overwhelmingly positive.  Praise flowed for director James Gunn and his successful balance of humor and action in the difficult space opera genre.  Oddball characters Groot and Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper respectively) got a fair share of the spotlight, and Dave Bautista’s Drax was called “better than Superman” by one viewer.  Overall, things are looking very, very good for the Guardians‘ debut, and for a possible sequel in the years to come.

Also starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Lee Pace, Karen GillanGlenn CloseBenicio Del ToroMichael RookerJohn C. Reilly, and Peter SerafinowiczGuardians of the Galaxy opens in 3D on August 1st.  Hit the jump to take a look at some early reactions to Guardians of the Galaxy.
