The trailer for the action-thriller Colombiana has gone online. Working from a script by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen (Taken), the film stars Zoe Saldana as woman who, after witnessing her parents’ murder as a child in Bogota, grows up to be a stone-cold assassin. While she works during the day as a hitwoman, at night she deals out vigilante justice in her quest to take down the mobsters responsible for the death of her parents. I like the idea of a female batman who uses a gun, but this may be the most generic action movie trailer I’ve ever seen. I’m a fan of Saldana so hopefully the movie has more personality and individually than the trailer.

Has potential. Vengeance can be awful boring, too, though. I’m not sure Zoe Seldana is making the best choices for her career.

Right after the trailer, did I just see an ad that makes light of a twin brother about to rape his brother’s girlfriend/lover in order to sell alchohol? Real classy.

There are only two notes that can be played to make this movie interesting, a strong interesting character. Which rests in the screenplay and Saldana…which on face value has the potential but lacks the consistency. While the other end of the equation is strong visceral direction, which for an action movie you’re going to need talent parallel to Mann’s Heat or Collateral, meaning that slicked down hard hitting look to it all, which again is possible with the track record of Taken.

Call me interested in the pedigree, but somewhat unimpressed with the presentation. That and I’m calling foul right off the bat for the black cat suit.

Bullshit ass movie. She goes in to find the bad guys that killed her parents. OK. How does she know who they are? I’m sure the half baked screenplay will make it so very easy for her to track down every goddamn person responsible. This is going to be by-the-dots predictable. Even down the hunky cop you know will bed her ass for sure.
Moreover he’ll administer some moral rhetoric to her because we can’t root for an assassin(moral dilemma) but that won’t matter because her character will have been accosted somewhere in the first act, by people associated with her parents killing. This of course is the cookie crumb set-up that she will follow straight to some goddamn, crumbling Latin castle with all the nooks and crannies needed for folks to dodge in and out of as the gun fire during ensues and motherfuckers get capped.
I think we get the picture.
