Yesterday I had the opportunity to participate in a press conference for FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, one of the funniest and most outrageous shows on television. The press conference featured all of the show’s main cast, including Glenn Howerton, Kaitlin Olson, Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, Danny Devito and Mary Elizabeth Ellis. For those who don’t know, Howerton, McElhenney and Day also write the show. The panel was a lot of fun and the cast gave out some good information about the upcoming season. Continue reading to see what the cast had to say.
-Admits that while a lot of episodes are purely fictional, many episodes are inspired by real life events. Stories are inspired by what’s happening in the news and events in the cast’s life.
-Promises that the resolution of Dee’s pregnancy will be something that no one has ever done on TV. (Dee is played by McElhenney’s real life wife, Kaitlin Olson. She is 9 months pregnant.)
-Every year the cast heads down to Philadelphia to shoot exterior shots on location but the rest of the filming of the show takes place in Los Angeles.
Glen Howerton
-The funniest taboo to tackle on the show in his opinion is transvestites.
-Says that the show is not heavily improvised and that he, McElhenney and Day strive to make the scripts feel natural and genuine so that improv is not necessary.
-Decided to write Kaitlin Olson’s pregnancy into the show for the character Dee because it was a fun new taboo for the show to tackle. Says that they worked very hard to put a new spin on sitcom pregnancy conventions.
-Joked that he would like to do a D.E.N.N.I.S. System seminar at next year’s Comic Con.
-Says his favorite aspect of the show is Charlie’s relationship with the waitress and everyone’s relationship to Rickety Cricket and the McPoyle twins.
Charlie Day
-Says that the writers have discussed making a feature film version of Sunny but are waiting for enough free time to make sure the script is perfect.
-Joked that some episodes will ignore Dee’s pregnancy altogether for comedic value.
-Says that Green Man will not appear in the upcoming season of Sunny but he would like to appear as Green man at next year’s Comic Con.
-He wouldn’t rule out the possibility of another musical episode and hopes to do one soon.
-Says FX has never told the writers that they are going too far with taboo topics. In fact, FX often encourages them to go further.
-Says Dave Foley, Tom Sizemore and Jason Sudeikis will guest star in the upcoming season.
Mary Elizabeth Ellis
-Says Day, McElhenney and Howerton try to write things that they find funny and just hope everyone else likes it.
-Says her character (The Waitress) will continue to have her life ruined by the gang and probably wont get a chance at vengeance in the foreseeable future.
-The show will never reveal her character’s first name.
-Her favorite aspect of the show is the characters’ relationship with their families.
-Says she didn’t want to hide her pregnancy on the show and was very gung ho about having her pregnancy weaved into the show’s storyline.
-Says the show is never intentionally offensive. Rather, the show aims to satirize intolerance and meanness.
-Says that the supporting actors (herself, DeVito, Ellis) only work a few months a year but the three writers/stars (McElhenney, Day, Howerton) work year round in the editing room and writing the show.
Danny DeVito
-Says a family has developed amongst the cast and it’s one of his favorite experiences of his career.
-The show is gaining popularity so quickly that many fans think the show just started this year when in fact its been on for five or six years.
