Movie panels in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con 2010 came to a close with Marvel assembling the entire lead cast of The Avengers together on the stage with director Joss Whedon, including the official announcement of Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk.

Hit the jump to read the full rundown.

UPDATED: Watch video of the cast coming out on stage!

the_avengersFirst was the Captain America: The First Avenger panel, then Thor, then Kevin Feige stayed on stage and the lights went out. We got a teaser trailer, which was just the classic “A” logo slowing fading in from black with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) talking about a team of heroes assembling. Jackson then came out to a huge applause. First he announced his right hand man, Agent Colston, played by Clark Gregg. Next was his right hand woman, Black Widow, played by Scarlet Johanssen. Then the God of Thunder, Thor – Chris Hemsworth. Captain America, played by Chris Evans. And even Robert Downey Jr., aka Tony Stark. All together, on the stage… together. Awesome. But it got better.

Downey got on the mike and asked if everyone had seen Inception. He said, he thought that was one of the most ambitious films he had ever seen… until he realized that Marvel was going to make a movie with every! single! superhero! they! had! The Avengers was the most ambitious movie ever, he said.

Then Downey brought out Jeremy Renner, who will play Hawkeye, and officially announced Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, the Hulk.

Finally, director Joss Whedon was announced and said “I had a dream all my life and it was not this good.” He joked that he was going to blow it.

The energy in the room for the entire event, which lasted only a few minutes after the hour long finale panel, was electric and near indescribable. The flash bulbs were popping, the digital cameras prevalent. Madness. If there’s a video, you have to find it. Jon Favreau threw down the gauntlet with his Cowboys & Aliens footage, but Marvel won Comic Con.

The Avengers hits theaters May 4, 2012.

Well… colour makes it a different character. Way back in Batman Year One, Frank Miller drew Catwoman as black, and it really worked (that line about “i've never met a man”), so the precedent was there. I was actually disappointed when they cast a white Michelle Pfeiffer the year after. Micheal Clark Duncan worked too, but was a different kind of Kingpin (“I grew up in the Bronx, Wesley, you wouldn't understand”). But Nick Fury has all that WWII commando / 1960s spy backgrounnd. They did hm as an American James Bond. Samuel L Jackson is a cool guy but just a different character — not Fury, sorry.

there's only one “m” and you do realize you're defending a medium where the men are all ripped and wear skin tight outfits and the women look like drag queens, right? Of course you don't. You can't script that kind of irony.

Oh…P.S. this movie will implode under the weight of its expectations. Suck it ; )

“man i´m nervous about joss whedon directing did anyone at marvel saw firefly fx?”

I'm sure they did. Firefly had a very limited budget compared to what Avengers will have. The technical quality of the effects aren't determined by the director per se.
