Sneak Peek from COMMUNITY Season 4 Premiere Shows the Dean’s Version of THE HUNGER GAMES

Danny Pudi, Jim Rash, and Joel McHale introduce the first extended clip from season 4 of Community, and you laugh, because it is three funny men who have learned how to play off each other well over the last few years.  Then they get to the clip, a Hunger Games spoof that thanks to an unfortunate midseason premiere is probably several months past timely.  A scheduling mishap led to overbooking the popular class History of Ice Cream, so the dean leads the students to the extravagant “Hunger Deans” to fight it out for a spot in the class.

It feels sterile (“Hunger Deans” is not funny, right?), but I can’t deny my prejudice about anything new in a post-Dan Harmon Community.  I will try to keep an open mind when Community returns on February 7, because I really am dying to see if one of my favorite shows can still be great, or if the creator’s departure will bury it.  Watch the clip after the break.

The synopsis for the Season 4 premiere, “History 101″:

The Study Group returns from summer break ready to tackle their fourth year of Community College. Jeff (Joel McHale) is particularly focused on graduating and is just a few credits away. When there is a mix-up with a history class registration, Dean Pelton (Jim Rash) institutes an elaborate physical competition for class space. Meanwhile, Britta (Gillian Jacobs) helps Abed (Danny Pudi) deal with the anxiety he is experiencing over the thought of the study group graduating and breaking up. Chevy Chase, Alison Brie, Yvette Nicole Brown, Donald Glover and Ken Jeong also star.

God, how do they not know Dean and Chang absolutely kill this show? There’s all this great, nuanced chemistry between the study group members, then it turns into The Gong Show when these clowns show up. I used to recommend Community, but I never knew when it would embarrass me so I stopped.

You are mistaken. A show that deals exclusively with the witty repertoire between the students would become stale and repetitive. The comedic relief bits are a great way to place the students in unique situations where their cerebral humor can expand and flourish.

I must respectfully disagree. A furry transvestite dean and a power hungry lunatic security guard/teacher/student are some of my faves. And i agree with johnny5.

They seem to just be throwing “Dean” into anything now. Rather than him just using it for corny lines when he comes into the room, he’s now just gone mad and is making every other word “Dean”.

“Simmer-Dean”? Makes no sense. And why’s the event called the “Hunger Deans”? That clip is a little worrying.

I agree. He’s always been one of my favorite characters, but he Deaned that up a little much.
