CONAN Is Jason Momoa; Mickey Rourke as Corin (aka Papa Barbarian)?

The little-known but very-in-shape Jason Momoa has been cast as the lead in Marcus Nispel’s Conan and we also have new details for a certain come-back star that might play his father, thanks to Latino Review. The part of Corin, Conan’s father, has been offered to Mickey Rourke. Meanwhile, with production set to begin within eight weeks, Momoa will have to add a good amount of muscle quickly. He has a solid frame, but doesn’t sport a barbaric build. I certainly doubt they are aiming for another Arnold Schwarzenegger but you have to at least look brutal.  Ripping flesh from giant drumsticks and drinking lots of mead doesn’t hurt either.

For more on the film, including why Rourke would be perfect and why Momoa is a risky choice, hit the break.

While Momoa will have to put even more muscle onto his hot bod, Rourke should arrive in great shape if he accepts the role. After all, he bulked up for 2008′s The Wrestler and he’s coming off his role as Russian super-villain Whiplash in Iron Man 2. This would be an inspired choice for Corin and it would be a pleasure to see Rourke in yet another large-scale film.

On the flip side, Momoa is an interesting choice that has some scratching their head and saying “Who the hell is that?” Momoa is best known for his long stints on Baywatch (44 episodes) and Stargate: Atlantis (78 episodes). Apparently they were not completely won over until Momoa, “charmed the pants off the executives.”  There was simply no other way to get those pants off.

One final note: Andrew Lobel’s re-write on the early screenplay by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer is getting high marks. Conan will be produced and distributed by Lionsgate.

If only Basil Poledouris could be raised from the grave to deliver another classic Conan score. Seriously his scores for those two original Conan films are absolutely outstanding.

I don't mind this casting… he will need to bulk up a little bit, but maybe he's already started as it's not like the photo being used by all the news sites is a recent shot.

His character in SGA was a sword welding warrior, and while I wasn’t a big fan of the show so can’t really comment on his acting ability, this is Conan. I’ve read the books and he’s hardy the most well developed character. After all, he is a barbarian. I mean Schwarzenegger could barely speak English at the time he filmed Conan which is why he barely speaks in the role so it’s not like they are casting a minor TV star to play a role by Laurence Olivier (or some other actor well known for their greatness).

As long as this is well shot and well directed (so as not to turn out like Scorpion King or Kull The Conqueror) then the actor playing the role just has to be able to swing a sword and look hard.

I honestly think Jason Momoa is a bad choice. I think he just doesnt sport the frame and even if he gained muscle and weight, it still wouldnt be enough. I dunno, maybe they need to keep the casting call open.

Jason Mamoa is sex walking. He was the only reason I watched SGA.

Hollywood isn't sports, they don't test for steroids. Mamoa can put on 20 pounds of muscle by the time they start filming. I love Rourke and would watch anything he does but Nispel is a dreadful director. The TCM remake was o.k. but the Friday remake was complete garbage. Pathfinder was a cool concept that he totally screwed up, that movie is unwatchable.

    Preach, brother!!!

Poledouris's majestic score allowed Milius to create a truly epic movie, where large stretches of the film are dialogue-free and just rely on excellent visual storytelling and that magnificent music.

The original CONAN THE BARBARIAN, to me, seemed much more along the lines of a Sergio Leone film than any of the lame sword and sorcery pictures that came after it and tainted its reputation.

The minimalism and simplicity of the story for Milius's original film is what makes it a masterpiece. And it's one of Hollywood's eternal shames that Milius's KING CONAN: CROWN OF IRON was never made.

I imagine Nispel will cram this movie will loads of useless CGI and incomprehensible action scenes, just like his wretched remake of PATHFINDER.

Who has handed “high marks” to Andrew Lobel's script? Avi Lerner?

It’s a Conan movie, so I’m going to go watch it regardless. However, I get the feeling I’m going to go watch it suck.
