Could Jonah Nolan Direct MAN OF STEEL While Christopher Nolan Directs JUSTICE LEAGUE?

Before we begin, consider this item to have “RUMOR” stamped across it in big red letters.  IESB has repeated some of the possibilities they’ve been hearing for the future of DC Comics in Hollywood.  The report acknowledges that some of it seems pretty unlikely, but cool enough to pass along.  First off, there’s talk that Christopher Nolan may have accepted the Superman “godfather” gig to better the chances of that his brother and Dark Knight co-writer, Jonah Nolan, would be hired to direct what is reportedly titled The Man of Steel.  On top of that, Nolan may be guiding the Superman and Batman franchises toward an eventual Justice League movie that he would helm, hinting at similar shepherding roles in the Green Lantern and (recently progressing) Flash movies.

Cool stuff indeed, but the probability that any of it comes to fruition is worth analyzing after the jump.

alex_ross_justice_league_of_america.jpgEven if the production on Man of Steel is considerably scaled down in the vein of the Spider-Man reboot, it’s unlikely to dip below $100 million, and will probably end up nearer the $200+ million range.  The Oscar-nominated Jonah Nolan has plenty of screenwriter experience, having worked on the script for The Prestige and Memento in addition to his work on The Dark Knight.  Still, this would be his first time in the director’s chair, and any potential incarnation of the next Superman film seems way too big for a first timer.  If, as rumored, Christopher Nolan really wants his brother to get the job, maybe he is willing to beef up his own involvement with the flick.  In fact, the only way I can see this one being true is if Nolan promises to serve as effective (though uncredited) co-director to handle the scale of such a picture.

The Justice League rumor is a little bit more reasonable, at least from one perspective.  I have no doubt that Warner Bros. would love entrust the DC superheroes to Nolan’s steady hand; that’s how you treat a director who delivered a comic book film unrivaled in commercial and critical success.  The bigger question is whether Nolan would actually want to undertake such a role.  Much has been made of the fact that, after the cultural phenomenon of The Dark Knight, Warner Bros. would love to make a deal for the sequel the very minute Nolan agreed to return to Gotham.  But news has been a long time coming, with quasi-confirmation coming only a few weeks ago.  Is Nolan, who took a respite from comic book work for The Prestige and the upcoming Inception between Batman films, really willing to devote the next years of his life so completely to these characters?  I doubt it, but it’s very good news for the movie-going public if he is.

So, don’t expect to see an announcement any time soon (er, ever), but feel free to ponder the possibilities in the comments below.

NO NO NO NO NO!!!! Nolans Batman, and Superman should NEVER meet on screen!

I'm not against Nolan doing a Superman film, I am just saying that for Supes to meet Nolans Batman, either Supes will have to go through some VERY unwelcome changes to make him realistic enough to fit into Batmans world. Or Batman-3 will have to go the wrong direction and become ridiculous and have an alien Supergod turn up in realistic gotham.
Either way, its like putting a square peg in a round hole.

UNLESS>>> After Bat-3, Batman is rebooted /re-imagined in his more familiar roots of comic book/fantasy. Which I as a Batfan, would love to see! Arkham Asylum(the game) has hit the Bat-spot for me the most so far. And its in that world and design that Batman should meet Superman and Green lantern etc.

My concern is taking a genius director and putting him on kiddie-comics duty (no offense to superman or the justice league but I don't think they are really that important to the film industry or very prestigious). I'd much rather see Nolan make another unique and intelligent film like The Prestige or his coming Inception. Though I do want him to make Batman 3 I just don't think putting such a talented director on a comic book universe is such a good use of his talents.

Nolan's Batman wouldn't work with a JL movie. Unless Batman 3 is very different and introduces the idea of super powered villians, then can you see the Dark Knight working along a guy who wears a bright red costume and has super speed? or one who has a power ring? If Nolan wasn't willing to make the Joker's skin white via a chemical accident, he's hardly going to be happy dealing with Wonder Woman.

I can't see DC/Warner pulling togeather a Justice League movie for years. If anything, they'll let Marvel do it first with the Avengers movie and see how that works out. Maybe we'll see something more tangable is the GL movie is a success.

I think this is total hyperbole.

The problem with this assumption is that people can't reinvent a franchise. To assume that is short-sighted, and historically speaking reinventing or making a rendition of a franchise has proven to be a fundamental block for a successful film franchise. Nolan has successfully pulled it off with Batman and J.R. Abrams did it with Star Trek. I don't think it can't be done with The Justice League and depending on the direction Green Lantern takes it might be easier. I think people are forgetting that Batman isn't the sole player in the Justice League and I think the day-time Gotham City from The Dark Knight could easily meld with Justice League. It isn't too much of a stretch to make a Superman atmosphere meet a Batman atmosphere halfway, it doesn't half to go to one side of the isle or the other.

Now just plopping all of the Justice League into the world of The Dark Knight would be a terrible mistake, but it doesn't have to go that way. I think Nolan has more talent than to just rehash the same film.

I think depending how they are doing it, it could work.

In the original Superman comics his powers were much more grounded. He couldn't fly only jump high, he could barely lift a car, his speed was about as fast as a train, he couldn't survive in space without a suit, and he could be killed by conventional weapons including an explosive. Basically the original Superman was the character David Dunn from Unbreakable, a strong man with some abilities ahead of normal man due to being from another planet but at the level that a normal man under the right circumstances could achieve. John Byrne's classic Superman run starting with the Man of Steel went back to this level of realism and the new Superman film rumored to be called Man of Steel is said to be going in this direction as well. The Marvel Studios film The Incredible Hulk also went this way where Hulk could barely lift a truck, he could feel pain, he learn to adapt to dangerous situations with improvisation, he could jump possible distances, and he could be killed by conventional weapons. So all they have to do is make a realistic man that yes has some super powers, but he also has limits as well as vulnerabilities.

Alongside Batman Superman could work if Superman goes to Gotham City to get Batman's help to fight Lex Luthor and Superman admits he lacks Batman's resources, experience, fighting prowess and detective skills. Batman can then help to train Superman and together with Superman build a powersuit for Batman in extreme situations to use to match Superman's power level. This way you can have Batman in a mentoring leadership position with Superman as his apprentice building together the Justice League.

First off all, lets just take a look at Nolans films shall we? The Following, Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Prestige, The Dark Night, and Inception.

If there is any director I would feel SUPER comfortable with taking over Man of Steel, it would be the Chris Nolan & Jonah Nolan combo. (Yes I know the Jonah didnt direct the movies above, but he sure did Co-Write them and has been working with his brother from the very beginning) Both brothers would take a hand at it as they have been in every other movie with the exception of the writing credit Jonah Nolan has in Terminator Salvation.

I doubt this means Chris Nolan would actually direct Justice League, BUT that isnt to say that he couldnt do a good job at it. If he decides to do so, he would be clever enough to solve the whole “Nolan's Batman is too realistic for supes to show up”. My hunch is one of the two brothers will direct the Superman Franchise, but will not direct JL.

it would be sheer genious to have nolans batman and superman meet, but heres my idea- while defeating the joker, who was broken out of arkham by the equally insane harlequin, and by barely defeating mr.freeze, who killed half of gotham, and is causing it to sink due to heavy ice overflow, gothams pratically a huge ice-burg, sinking into abyss, batman nearly gives up hope from saving his beloved city, until a miracle appears in the form of superman, who, while in his guise of clark kent saw on the news that gotham was on the brink of destruction due to the villian mr.freezes machine, and decided to help batman save gotham by unthawing it and assisting batman in defeating mr.freeze.batman doesnt beleive supermans real, thinks he's a media gimmick, and is proven wrong when supes saves him from the jokers latest onslaught by blowing up wayne enterprises warehouse in gotham harbor.forming an unlikey bond, the two set out to help one another fight crime in the form of some super and not so super-powered villians.and when lex luthor has a secret meeting with the joker, and form a group of villians, bats and supes set out to do the same by forming the justice leauge, the first members can include green arrow and black canary, freinds of batmans, and the flash and martian manhunter, and auquaman, freinds of supermans, wonder woman joins up to add another woman to the team and then plastic man,red tornado, and green lantern and hawkman join as well. lex's legion of doom could include the joker, scarecrow, poison ivy,toy-man,solomon grundy, bizzaro, gorilla grodd, giganta, cheetah, brainiac, and captain cold.imagine the effects, the fight scenes, the thrill of it all. it'd be a cinematic masterpiece, and dc would seriously give marvel studios a run for their money.lets hope it happens….
