DreamWorks and Universal could probably rely on title alone to build anticipation for Cowboys & Aliens, but they aren’t resting on their laurels. Jon Favreau (Iron Man) is directing. The script comes from Damon Lindelof (Lost), Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek). The studios rounded up an all-star cast featuring Daniel Craig, Sam Rockwell, Olivia Wilde, Harrison Ford, Clancy Brown, Paul Dano, and Keith Carradine. I’m, like, quadruple sold. Tonight brings us our first look at the production, as Favreau tweeted a picture taken during camera tests. It’s not much, but it may give some indication of the costumes in store, and it looks super cool (backlighting tends to have that effect). Check out the full image after the jump.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger (Craig) with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don’t welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Ford). It’s a town that lives in fear.
But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known.
Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he’s been, he realizes he holds a secret that could give the town a fighting chance against the alien force. With the help of the elusive traveler Ella (Olivia Wilde), he pulls together a posse comprised of former opponents—townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache warriors—all in danger of annihilation. United against a common enemy, they will prepare for an epic showdown for survival.

im pretty excited
I still say Favreau was maybe not the best choice for director. Don't get me wrong, I like his movies, but I don't know if he can pull this one off.
I know he did IRON MAN, but I guess I'm one of the few that think the flicks were just okay. He just doesn't seem to have a style.
This is awesome material and maybe it should be in the hands of a James Cameron or a Robert Rodriguez.
Im just saying.
I hope it rocks though.
Holy kick ass. Must be Craig in costume.
I hate most of Robert Rodriguez' movies. Sin City was the only one worth watching. Favreau hasn't made a bad film yet.
(Ablonde might be living in my neck of the woods)

I am really very exited about this, i want to watch this as soon as possible. As we know Favreau tweeted a picture taken during camera tests. I think they are giving some indication of the costumes in store but yeah, i agree that it looks super cool.
I don't know about the “Cowboys” part of the equation, but Favreau did cover aliens in “Zathura”, and it was a fun movie. Plus, I'll also say that I believe even though he's not usually trumpeted as a real directing whiz, Favreau is one of the few major directors to effectively use CGI in his movies (to me, “effectively” means that it's integral to the story, its use is authentic and you rarely question the physical reality of the object, even though your brain knows it's not real). From “Elf” on down to “Iron Man 2″, the guy just plain knows how to use effects, mainly because he mixes CGI with a whole lot of practical effects and doesn't try to oversell it like, say, Steven Spielberg (CGI gophers? Seriously?).
Man, this would have made SO much more money if Robert Downey had stayed with the production.
Biggest concern about the film is Craig (love him as Bond, in 'Layer Cake', etc.) Knowing that Downey was first choice, I'm trying to figure out what Craig's character would be like (never read the graphic novel). And while Favreau's acting is up for debate, agree with NightAvatar – he doesn't make bad films. Impressive especially considering that for IM2, the screenwriter Theroux(?) is a hack.
Anyway, it's a cool idea with a great cast (hoping Harrison doesn't phone in the role from home) and a solid director. Looking forward to seeing this.
One more thought. If that is Craig in the photo, he looks a little thin (for him). Trying to figure out what the photo reminded me of and then it hit me. With the lean look, good posture and “form fitting” western clothes, I wonder if the character is based off Yul Brynner in The Mag 7. Just a thought.
Umm…don't want to rain on your parade. I mean, I'm pretty psyched for this one, too…
…but it's a cowboy. With backlights. I'm not getting anything from this photo…
It's still gonna be a sweet movie.
So basically, it's Briscoe County Junior, the movie?
This…. uhh…. this isn’t news.
This…. uhh…. this isn’t news.
Are you kidding? Is this how pathetic the drooling fan community has gotten? Come back when you have a real story and f u Favreau.
bullshit ..iron man 2+zathura sucked blals so dont say favreau hasnt made a bad movie
It's fine to have an opinion and be a jackass at the same time. Personally, I really liked Zathura (much better than any “Spy Kids” movie) and though Iron Man 2 was not as good as the first, it was not a bad movie. It was simply not as good as I hoped. I still liked it, and wouldn't call it a “bad movie”. You suck.
CGI gophers?!! Ha ha ha! Man, that was perfect. Why oh why did he have to do that to us?
Favrue is an excellent director, IRON MAN is his best work, IM 2 is not as good but still it is a whole lot of fun. it is amazing that IRON MAN is just his 4th directed film. I think comparing him with robert rodriguez is a joke. any way he knows how to make an entertaining blockbuster and with the amazing cast C&A is going to rock.
