A couple days ago, the teaser poster for Jon Favreau’s Cowboys & Aliens went online.  Now we have the teaser trailer for the film.  If you saw the footage they played at Comic-Con, then a lot of this trailer will look familiar.  If you weren’t one of the 6,000 people sitting in Hall H that day, then don’t worry: what they showed us was bad-ass.  Despite the silly title, this trailer confirms what I’ve heard about the movie playing both the western and the sci-fi elements completely straight.  I don’t know how that will play with a populace that seems to crave irony at every turn, but I like the confidence and the willingness to try something original.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Directed by Jon Favreau, Cowboys & Aliens stars Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell, Adam Beach, Paul Dano, and Noah Ringer.  It opens July 29, 2011.

Here’s the official synopsis for Cowboys & Aliens:

1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don’t welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde. It’s a town that lives in fear.

But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known.

Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he’s been, he realizes he holds a secret that could give the town a fighting chance against the alien force. With the help of the elusive traveler Ella, he pulls together a posse comprised of former opponents – townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache warriors – all in danger of annihilation. United against a common enemy, they will prepare for an epic showdown for survival.

I’d have seen it just by the title alone. Add in Bond with a gadget and Indy as a cowboy… gravy.

I have to admit that I loved everything about this except Favreau directing. I thought he would deliver a mediocre, fluff film with no visual style. Which is what I thought of IRON MAN.

He just slapped the sh*t out of me with this trailer. IT LOOKS AWESOME! CAN’T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GRAZER, SPEILBERG, HOWARD, screw Favreau because he fucked up Iron Man 2 but he can still handle a Panavision camera. This is gonna be the shit! I can’t wait.

actually marvel did that he actually has called the film trash and disrespected it and everything one reason why everyone thought he wouldn’t come back but disney straightened things out and whipped marvel until they pushed the date back.

Yeah Marvel forced the Avengers BS on them and kind of tied their hands creatively so it was hard to do the story they wanted to do. I also think they went a little over board on every single character trying to be witty and funny with the back and forth banter. It was very irritating.

I just saw this again and recalled that Robert Downey Jr. was supposed to be in it. Hmmm…..after seeing Craig, I don’t think RBDJ was right for it.
