We’re getting a new Rocky movie this year, folks!  Well, sort of.  Warner Bros. and MGM have set a November 25th release date for the upcoming spinoff Creed, which stars Michael B. Jordan as the son of Apollo Creed, whom Sylvester Stallone’s titular character fought in the original series of films.  Stallone co-stars in Creed alongside Jordan, but perhaps the most exciting aspect of this movie is that it marks young director Ryan Coogler’s follow-up to the excellent 2013 pic Fruitvale Station.

This year’s Thanksgiving holiday is incredibly crowded at the multiplexes, and I imagine some further shifting will take place.  For now, Creed is poised to open opposite the following films on the Turkey Day weekend: Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur, Ridley Scott’s sci-fi thriller The Martian, Mud director Jeff Nichols’ sci-fi film Midnight Special, and an untitled X-Mas comedy starring Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Additionally in release date news, Warner Bros. has pushed its Point Break remake back significantly.  The Ericson Core-directed redo was initially slated to open this summer on July 31st, but Paramount recently moved Mission: Impossible 5 up to that date, forcing Warner Bros. to find a new home for its own action-filled film: Christmas Day.  Edgar Ramirez and Luke Bracey lead the cast of Point Break, which revolves around the world of extreme sports and criminals who use their athletic skills to pull off heists.

The Christmas Day release was originally M:I 5’s home, and it now positions Point Break opposite Will Smith’s NFL drama Concussion, the animation/live-action hybrid Monster Trucks, David O. Russell’s Joy, and Alvin and the Chipmunks 4.
