Lawsuit Over THE CROW Settled; Reboot to Move Forward

     January 23, 2012

The reboot that no one is asking for looks like it may be moving forward. A revisiting of director Alex Proyas’ 1994 Miramax picture, The Crow, was previously in the works through Relativity Media. Since the Weinsteins distributed the original through Miramax and had contracts claiming ownership of all rights to The Crow, they filed suit against Relativity seeking “injunctive relief,” ie ceasing all The Crow-related production. Not to be intimidated, Relativity fired counter-claims.

Things haven’t gone particularly well for the reboot as directors have come and gone, writers have signed on and then dropped out, and principal actors have been offered roles but have ultimately left the project. In short, it’s been a mess. One bright spot in production is that both sides of the lawsuit have settled amicably. While the good news is that this brings The Crow reboot closer to reality, the bad news is that this brings The Crow reboot closer to reality. Hit the jump to read the press release.

brandon-lee-the-crowFor what it’s worth, I believe it’s sacrilegious to even consider a reboot of The Crow, just as it was more than unnecessary to make three horrendous sequels. Check out the press release about the lawsuit settlement below:

“The lawsuit between Relativity Media and The Weinstein Company concerning THE CROW has been amicably settled out of court, and the parties will continue to work on the film together as planned. In addition, Relativity Media has dismissed all of its claims against The Weinstein Company for any wrongdoing regarding the release and distribution of NINE, and The Weinstein Company has dismissed all of its claims against Relativity Media.”

Somehow I doubt they will ever be able to out-due the original. The Crow is just a masterpiece, and it can’t be touched.

But, if they make a new Crow film that manages to be good and at least come close then what the heck, maybe it’ll be a hit and bring some kids to the original. I’m a firm believer in the fact that no matter how bad shoot-offs can become, they can’t ever taint the quality of the original.

Unnecessary, but considering they are remaking every other crap movie from the 40s-80s why not throw in a remake of a quality film? Just a testament to how much people liked the original, that it has spawned so many sequels and now a remake even though they have all been bad haha.
